it's a shame woolie missed dora criticising the dialogue system as part of harry's madness.
if you try harder to 'win her back', she talks about how they had to live poor and borrow money from her parents while harry was training to become a cop. she says that being a cop has driven you insane to the point where you can't talk normally anymore. you can only speak in lists and trees of topics and constant questions, sometimes repeating things you've already said. you fell into a depression that manifests differently based on one of the 4 main stats.

Every single aspect of this dream is so brutal, but it's not until you get to the end, and Delores drops that final bombshell on you. When you finally figure out exactly what it was that made Harry want to annihilate his memories completely, this dream happens to him every single night. Every night he relieves the pain of the person he loves most in the world leaving him, for six years, no matter how bad Harry may have been before this kind of endless looping tragedy dragged him so low his only choice was to try and escape. And the worst part is, he succeeded, or he would have if it weren't for you. Making him read that letter, making him dial that long, long number. We're the ones responsible for pulling Harry back into the abyss of depression he'd escaped, mistakenly thinking piecing his past together would somehow make him whole again. Everyone warned us.

The sad thing is that even if you don't dial the number, even if you let the wind take the letter (Shivers: LET GO) it will always lead back to this. Even when Harry obliterates himself as totally as he can without killing himself, and runs away as much as possible, he will always be back outside that video rental store. Over and over again.

My favorite part about this entire thing with Harry's relationship is that it doesn't *have* a defining "This is the thing that made the break-up happen", at least one that we see.
As far as we're aware, it was a long, protracted relationship that spanned years and just...took a turn for the worst. It was poverty and pain, two people suffering to stay together even if it wasn't what was best for them, and it was the slowest, most painful death of a relationship possible. You can point at the abortion as the breaking point (and that's fair) but you can also say that was a symptom of the true gravity of the abyss their relationship found itself in, not the cause.
At the end of the day, I think that is a much more poignant and horribly dark way of conveying just how screwed up the relationship was. The kind of screwed up that results in someone, well, like Harry.

The combination of Harry being a police officer in one of the busiest sections of Revachol, in a department that is always understaffed, under-equipped, and dealing with horrific shit on a near daily basis, along with him working his ass off to get that promotion just to make ends meet and ultimately win Dora's approval -- that kind of stress turned Harry into a high-strung mess. Their relationship was doomed from the start.

    • @Lazypackmule
      @Lazypackmule 2 года назад +12

The crushing part of that is that Harry suffers from the same conflict we do
It would be easy to look at things like the abortion and the poverty and the running off to the other side of the world happy and free and think that She must be the problem, but we can't, She's just too perfect
It would also be easy to just say none of the material circumstances mattered and see all of this as just the natural result of it being a bad matchup running its natural course, but that can't be it either, there needs to be a way to solve the case, a way that everything could have worked out- that they still could work out
But no matter how lost in his destructive delusions Harry gets, to him, it's never her that could be the problem, it's women, women are just terrible(except for her, she's an angel, she just can't help what she is). And it's never the relationship that could've been the problem, any specific problems could've clearly been worked through, so it must be him, he's just a stupid unlovable piece of shit and always will be(and if a relationship is bad, it's bad because he's part of it, simply a one-sided poison with no other contributing factors)
It's the worst psychological trap there is, and the most unacceptable thing about it is that it could ever be naturally occurring

Harry is sick. He feels that to get better, to let her go, to recover, would cheapen what he felt, what their relationship meant. If it is something that he can never get over, then its loss was devastating. If its loss was that devastating, that only proved how much it meant to him, how *pure* it was.
Sometimes people want to be miserable, because that's how they feel they *should* be, that's what the proper response is, and to deny that would be to deny how strongly they felt about what they lost. It's part performance, part compulsion. Sometimes people like Harry don't want to get better, they want to get worse. Because it signifies, to them and anyone else watching (and no one is watching), just how *saaaaaaad* they are. Isn't it majestic? That level of sadness, that level of grief? It's almost like a work of art, they think, and they want you to see it, to know it, to feel what they feel.
But the truth is, we can't feel what they feel and most of us just don't give a damn. The performance is for an audience of one, to the benefit of nobody. Recovery isn't something to be shameful of, it doesn't negate the truth of your previous pain. All it shows is that you are trying to create a new life for yourself. You don't owe your destruction to your past demons. You don't owe them anything.

One interpretation I've read online about why this break-up is so bad for Harry which I kinda like is due to him being a human can-opener. As a human can-opener, he is able to get into the heads of his suspects, figure out their motives and mindset, and solves crimes with his unorthodox yet brilliant methods.
This either means he fully understands why Dora left him despite being someone who has been by his side for so long (i.e. that he is an unlovable insane mess of a person etc.) which breaks him more with that crushing understanding that the problem is something that passionate love will never overcome or that even as a human can-opener, he is unable to fully understand why she left him which tears at his already fragile mind.

The thing that just made that whole thing sting SO MUCH WORSE to me in that whole situation, was Dora showing Harry that she chose to abort Harry's child and revealing that she was pregnant with the other guy's child. Even through Harry's distorted visage of her as some paragon of innocence, it's unbelievably callous. Harry isn't perfect, and likely wasn't prior to the breakup, but no one deserves pain like that.

Nobody's mentioned it, but incidentally, the answer is unironically in the religious symbology. Harry has literally deified his ex, but it's so much more than that
Dolores Dei herself has been deified, hailed as abject perfection and inhuman monster in equal measure, just like Dora. A being that must be worshipped
But Dolores Dei is of the past. She died 200 years ago. Her time is gone, and can never return
But the spirit of her, the thing that made her special, is still out there, still crawling up the backs of anyone willing to get out of their own heads and listen to the world around them. And she still loves Harry. Harry will always have that love, and so there will always be hope, he just has to stop wallowing in sadness and realize it's there, waiting to make him happy again in the future
And best of all, this analysis would piss woolie off to no end

I worry about Harry. Not so much because he still pines for his ex-wife, though he pines for her super hard, but because of the fact that his subconscious seems to think that his ex-wife was a super important political figure who died, what, 300 years ago?

On a re-viewal of the series, commenting to say that's it's all in the name. Dolores Dei, as in deity, as in she's been deified in Harry's subconscious, wearing the face of the single greatest human being who ever lived. That's how pivotal she was to his life, and being dumped by the most important person in history is the pain and humiliation Harry felt here.

This entire scene is of the level of Mary reading her letter in Silent Hill 2 for me. Tragedy and heartbreak, Mary still tops it but a different kind... of emotion? Or what they were going for in this one. The struggle that is this self imposed hell, both unable to let it go and unable to try to move on. I feel like there is still hope for Harry, she says 20 years but I feel like there may be a future for him without this weighing him down.

Like a source of strength where nothing can be worst or better. Which leaves you open to surprises on that moderate belief as they exceed those parameters someday. But until then, you can tank everything within that reality and move on, because the thing you went through has physical proof of actually happening and you're still here.

I've been Harry. But mine wasn't as bad and it only took 2-ish years after the end of the relationship to get to a point where I was reasonably okay.
If someone else is reading this and going through this, the breakthrough moment was forgiving myself for everything that happened. It just randomly came up while I was showering at university. Nothing related had happened. I was just showering and thinking and something clicked. I decided I'd forgive myself for how it went and make sure I didn't make the same mistakes in my next relationship.
Keep doing new things in your life, get help if you need it, do your best to process things. But you can't force yourself to move on. It'll happen on its own with time and changes to your life.
Years after forgiving myself, I found someone else and we've been together 10 years now.
It's not over, it's just over with them. Do your best to be kind to yourself. Put some points into your empathy stat.

I've had some pretty gnarly breakups, but I stayed friends with most of my exes. I realized that's all I ever wanted anyway. A friend. 'Relationship' is just a dance I learned to do, to please other people.
I did have _one_ ex who never spoke to me again, tho. I beat myself up over it pretty bad. She said we were still on good terms, but I told myself that was a lie to _placate_ me and keep me from doing Crazy Ex shit. I was convinced that I was a bad guy, getting my punishment, and interpreted everything I did in the worst possible light because I didn't wanna risk _not being accountable._
It took a long time for other close friends to convince me that I'm _not_ hazardous and I'm worth loving. I'm certain Dora never said half this shit to Harry. She may've terminated the pregnancy, but Harry's the one calling himself a 'poor fuck' in her sweet, soft voice in order to explain it to himself.

On every corner, Harry's feelings warn you that you're on a dark path but you press on because you want to find out what happened between him and Dora. The only way for Harry to get better is to completely avoid being reminded of her.

Oh man, I refused the opportunity to take a nap and just never saw this. Well, it does answer some questions about the exact circumstances of the breakup.
    TMI
I did have a breakup so bad that I can't move on from the fallout even 10 years later, despite trying to date other people. But I honestly can't really sympathize or empathize with Harry at all, maybe because for me there's no love leftover, only betrayal.
But as for dreams? I have psychotic depression and there was a year where almost every night, I would see giant spiders crawling the walls every time I almost drifted off, and they didn't go away unless I turned on a light. After about 6 months of insomnia due to fear, I stopped reacting to them. "There's the spiders again, yeah. Get some new material, hallucinations." You can get used to almost anything emotionally painful if it's consistent enough.
