If it was half the price and had more storage it would be alot more appealing but if you don't mind putting in the disc you save a massive amount of money with just getting a 4k disc player.

@@AllAccessConstruction It's more than overpriced, it's borderline offensive LOL! That being said I'm probably going to get one! The convenience factor is nice, but the more enticing aspect of Kaleidescape to me is that it can have better quality audio and video than physical discs along with a really badass user interface! Let's be real, that home screen looks incredibly slick! I know some people prefer and like to show off their DVD collection as part of the room decor but I'd rather have it all on a server in my rack room! (after I build my rack room LOL)

The disc to digital aspect is the most compelling to me. If you have a collection of hundreds of older 1080p Bluray's and DVD's, the cost savings of upgrading all of them to 4k would offset most of the cost of the system if I understand their advertising correctly.
Yes, it's expensive, but it's a luxury product. You're paying for the convenience of not having to rip physical media to your own server and manage the catalog yourself. That's a lot of time and headache saved.
The big hesitation for me is what happens if they disappear? Will all the movies you purchased digitally be honored either by some replacement or the studios directly? For this amount of money, there should be a contingency plan provided by Kaleidescape to take the risk off of the consumer.

@Theo M zapitti doesn’t upgrade the quality. I have both zappiti and Kaleidescape. I have a huge older dvd/Blu-ray collection so the discounted upgrades through disc to digital definitely helped offset the cost. I use zapitti for everything not in the kscape library

Not everybody has the ability to spend months ripping their 2000 disc library to a NAS and maintain it. I wish KScape could sign a deal with the studios to replace the streaming services that throttle their content. I'm sure the massive numbers of people using the system would make the equipment affordable to most.

    • @michaelbeckerman7532
      @michaelbeckerman7532 Год назад

If you are OK with a 65" screen jump now and get the A95K at $2,800 to $3,000 while they are still available - they won't be for very much longer. The 65" A95L will ship during the second to third week of September but the 65" version of that TV is likely to be closer to $4,200, at least at its initial retail price point. Now, that will likely come down in price some over the course of the 90-days following the release date as some sales start to set in, but you can never count on that entirely. Plus, they are expecting EXTREMELY high demand for the A95L when it first ships to market so that is likely going to be a VERY hard TV to put your hands on, at least for the first few weeks while the initial demand for it is incredibly high.

This is really an indulgence for the ultra-rich. This is for the man that is rich enough that his wife won't ever care if he drops $8K on a download movie service and player. This isn't for people that have to save up $8K in order to buy it. It's largely for people that spending $8K means essentially nothing to them. People that have already spent $25,000 to $95,000 on their home theaters setup don't give a damn about dropping $8K more on a download service and player. They are rich enough to literally not even care.

Thanks for making content about this. I've been watching this product for over 10 years. They'll never be mass market now. I think they had a chance years ago except they were (and still are way too overpriced). Today people laugh at those of us who buy "ownership" of movies whether physical or digital. And as always the vast majority think the cheapest option is good enough. So mass market is out of the question now.
Anyway, I keep hoping they'll wise up and cut their price in half (at least). I mean they get a cut of every movie sale to boot.
They finally offer rentals, though at a high price.
I imagine A/V-philes would love a system where you could rent a download in the highest quality possible. I know I want to watch the best quality available (especially after buying the AV gear) however I'm tired of having to buy everything physical in order to do so. So I settle and stream. I do still buy 4K disc but man sometimes that's disappointing and I wished I just could have rented it in high quality download.

I think there is a value proposition to this product, but it is WAY overpriced! The hardware is worth, maybe, player $500-1000 (for the Panasonic 4K player or a small HTPC equivalent) plus storage (16TB external hard drive) for $500... At retail!
Add even $1K for software and you are only up to $2500 Max. Maybe add another $1000 for the convenience of having it in one box and you're still only at $3500.
For that same $3500, you could easily build TrueNAS server running Plex with AT LEAST 64TB (depending on drive sale prices, and maybe up to double that) of ZFS2 usable storage (pushing 1000+ 4K digit movies, with 2 redundant drives)! Plex also allows for a lot of discovery.
Even better, you can have your Plex server in a separate room (e.g. office) and stream it to whatever device you want through your existing Blu-ray player, receiver, or TV (depending on features). Maybe it won't have the ultimate quality, but for least than half the price, you'll get probably 90+% of the quality and features. And you'll have way more flexibility because your TrueNAS server can also work as a home backup, etc, server.
    Anyway, my $.02...

I definitely agreed with you. The price is ridiculous. But its new and the only one for now. Wait til the tech matures and eventually the prices will come down to a way more affordable price. Remember how expensive oled was when it came out? Now it's a fraction of the original cost. It's an awesome product. Just not today haha

@@dp-calibrations2057 They've been around for 20 years, it's not new tech, and the price isn't going down no matter how much us home theater geeks want it to! Of course it's a rip off if you don't have the money to pay for it! If the hardware was $3,000 I'd buy it tomorrow! I've found them for over $2000 less than retail, so if a dealer is willing to give you a $2000 discount on the hardware just imagine the fuckin margines! I think it's an incredible product, and it sucks that it's everywhere and on every single home theater picture you look up it shows Kaleidescape's home page on the screen! They charge so much that they can afford to not move a ton of inventory. My only issue is this...4 times better picture than streaming......okay but then show that side by side, 10 times better audio I do believe cuz streaming audio is shit compared to regular SD DVD!

I understand that this is the future of high end media consumption. However, the movie is still compressed. I also wish that the entry price is more affordable. That price is STEEP no matter who you are. Excited to see how studios release a less compressed files along with the technology being adopted by bigger companies like Apple. They have already dipped their toes in “lossless” audio. So higher quality content is on the radar for these bigger companies and for the sake of Kaleidoscape longevity, they need to lower the price before Apple gets an exclusive contract with movie studios to sell these less compressed files on a new piece of hardware like an “Apple TV Pro - Studio” that has equally or better technology than what Kaleidoscape has to offer. Sad to say but studios will invest where the money is at.

  • @michaelbeckerman7532

I got to see one of these in action the other day at a friend's house and they are absolutley wonderful, however, this friend had already invested over $65,000 into his home theater room alone. So, for him, dropping another $8K on Kaliedscape was nothing. This is obviously targeted at the ultra-wealthy that couldn't care less about spending another $8K on stepping their home theaters system up to the next level.

Streaming services all still use FAR too much compression and they are 100% dependent on your Internet connection. If your connection to the web goes down for ANY reason, you won't be watching anything. This is a big part of the reason why so many people that do a lot of streaming today STILL buy 4K Blu-ray players 4K discs of their favorite films. Your disc player will never care about the status of your connection to the web and you can take both your player and your discs anywhere you want and watch them wherever you want.

If you are spending 8k for discovery then you have money to blow and good on you. The higher bit rate is for people who think exotic speakers make a difference in sound quality. Good on you but normal people won’t see difference over a 4k disc. The convenience is the biggest factor so if you are top income bracket then the cost is relative. Most people’s projectors don’t even cost 8k. IMO you are better off spending that money on a Lumagen, Panamorph DCR Lens and a 2.35 aspect ratio high quality screen. I’m not knocking the device I just think it’s a niche device for a very small clientele. And with the increases in internet bandwidth they are an Apple TV update away from irrelevancy. It would surprise me in the near future if Apple made a box that had built-in SSD storage and a special iTunes Store to buy bit-for-bit quality movies or offer to give you access to them if you have already bought them like they did when they started offering 4k movies. I’ve thought about buying one but I just can’t justify the cost to myself. I would rather use that money add to it and replace my Marantz AV 8805 with a Trinnov Altitude 16 or replace my Lumagen with a MadVR Envy Extreme. Js

This product is a joke. They're charging thousands for a box with a 6TB *mechanical hard drive* in it ($120 on Amazon) and doesn't support dynamic HDR. A Plex server does 99% what this does for a tenth of the cost. And with that, you actually own the damn files. This company goes under or contracts with the studios run out, your movies are gone just like with streaming.
I doubt the quality is that much of a leap up anyway, I have 4K rips on my server right now that are 90 mbps.

Jellyfin is free. You have to rip the movies to .mkv yourself, but I used an old computer and put in 16tb of hard drive space for $300. I can also stream my music and movies to myself anywhere I go. I don't think you can compete with that for $6000.
