I always loved how much fun the bomb techs had being involved with the show. "So remember that massive boom we did here last time? We're gonna double the explosives, cos we think it will be fun"
The phone book pages did not just slide apart. The paper itself tore evenly on both sides. Both books show the same damage. The slo mo shows it well. So they never overcame the friction. Cool.
@@Tyrannosaurusstudios You make me feel old, i began to follow them when i was 23 years old in the 3 season, i only see the first and second in the specials.
The Phonebook Friction Myth is one of the few I would contest needed a revisit as when the phone books separated you can see that a lot of pages were ripped out which indicates it was the pages that failed and not the friction between the pages. Yes it is a technicality however when the pages started to fail in the shop test they did call it indicating that the pages failing doesn't count.
Agree. It was individual pages failing. One might argue that it is somewhat similar to what Adam did when he ripped single book apart. At the same time you can see that some pages separated intact. Would love to see a closer look at them.
I think it's impossible to bust bc page tension gets so strong that books spine just gets tore apart and if you replace paper pages with smth else then u would have to replace books cover too and that means you end up in the same position but this time with much stronger material and much stronger tension so to actually bust this myth u have to somehow mathematically calculate the amount of damage the book itself can take before it gets tore apart but not enough to actually start tearing pages. All in all that means you have to have material elastic and strong enough to withstand radically different levels of tension on its different parts, that means you have to create composite material which combines 2 or 3 different types of fibers simultaneously like mother nature actually did in our body when created tendon-muscle type of fiber binding... Even then - when someone gets muscle injury it's often that their tendons gets ripped off of bones and not the other way around, so muscle-tendon juncture stays mostly intact Okay it's too long. I think its impossible, just try to rip your arm off using your other arm - you cant do that (maybe)
I disagree purely for the spectacle. Two big trucks on the proper terrain with good tires probably could have separated them. Then the mythbusters would have had no reason to upgrade to the tanks. Going from cars to tanks is just fun.
The Deep Blue Sea myth uses an actual harpoon gun. That's literally the only realistic thing in that film. Shame it wasn't a Greener, the iconic Martini action harpoon gun in Jaws.
How do fish get in a rock quarry pond? if none were put there? I understand tadpoles because Frogs hop on land but fish dont yet I've seen minnows in quarry ponds that NO ONE added them into HOW? through the rain somehow?
I would argue, that the second of the shark myths also failed, as they shot a normal harpoon arrow. The arrow in the movie was much heavier (due to more metal and obviously the "2 1/2 sticks of dynamite" worth of black powder) and not exactly aerodynamic... The shot they made didn't prove anything. It's a harpoon, it was made to shoot these kind of distances. The thing they wanted to test - that it would still be accurate with the extra weight and a *metal* cable - they didn't test *at all*!
"Everybody has got a phonebook!" Aged well... 😂
I remember this being my favourite episode back in the day

They "forgot" to check the burst discs after the 2½ sticks of dynamite. That was where shark was killed and the hero might have survived.
you do know this is from more then 14 years ago
@@Tyrannosaurusstudios Yeah. So?

still busted since they tested the original amount on the first one and it didn't even ripple the water

Phonebook friction is one of my favourite myths. I also like the shark myth though not quite as much.

yeah i call it comfirm.. if u need to 2 tank to ripe of a phone.. yeah that sound impossible to me..
@@johariawang7713 Google the word "impossible".
Finally Jamie's beret goes with the vehicles in the episode!
Finally fixed sound. Thank you.
20:47 hahah Tori's not going easy on her
LoL THis is why rental agencies now have GPS and a "no offroad" policy.
I love this friction Episode. It was funny and amazing.
Imagine just driving and all of a sudden you see a huge shark back of a truck. Love to see the reaction 😂
Hugo is certainly one of Tory's better creations.
RIP Hugo the Shark :c
One Mythbusters episode per day keeps the doctor away.
Just one?? Lol
Yes recreation and free time are very important.
Largest collection of military armoured vehicles? Nope. Bovington absolutely blows any yank collection away.
"privately owned"
17:30 Jamie tackles the myth that beating someone with a phonebook leaves no bruises.
That little black tape on side is Flex Tape and it the thing that is holding it together.
The mighty phonebook!
Thank you for posting full episodes, i watched alot of mythbusters after school when i was young
Everybody's got a phone book?
Lol, not even whenever this episode was a thing :-P.
Imagine you are on your way to work and the first thing you see is two dudes in a truck with a shark in the back
This episode turned into the hurt locker REAL QUICK! 😂😂💯💀
20:27 makes me wonder. Does everyone still keep a phone book? Does the Gen Z even know what a phone book is?
definitely not. Maybe some people keep it for novelty, but no way anyone actually uses them nowadays.
Yes we know, I used to have one when i was a kid, 96 is gen z
98 here, I used one from kid to teenage years. It was also being taught back then.
Also many people are born after casettes yet they know what it is.
Younger Gen Z, I remember them too. However, parents stopped getting them when I was around 10? I was pretty young anyway
I still get them, although they're more like advertisements for local businesses.
My only gripe for Phone Book Friction is I wish they had a upgrade between cars and tanks. Like... maybe a big, powerful pair of trucks?
I disagree purely for the spectacle. Two big trucks on the proper terrain with good tires probably could have separated them. Then the mythbusters would have had no reason to upgrade to the tanks. Going from cars to tanks is just fun.
Doesnt matter what you use. If it pulls 8000pounds or 3.6t it will do the job.
But books wasnt separated though. Looks to me that pages ripped every second page or so and that got it to move.
God must be GREAT to be a retired FBI agent lol, the man keeps on having fun. (hope hes still alive, it being old eps)
I love how tory never weaars a hard hat 😂
I need a Hugo the Shark in my collection 😢
Yay! The sound works.
Agreed, this time our right ears can enjoy too
“DEEP BLUUUE SEEEA!!! Did you see that one?! They ate me! A muthafarkin shark ATE ME!” #samjacksonbeer
Gotta watch your doors and corners, kid.
Or the room EATS you.
Nothing is Indestructible in this Universe. Everything has a threshold limit.
And in this episode they proved that a phonebook has a higher friction strength threshold than tensile strength.
Soo... what exactly is a "phonebook"? somethink like a book with phones in it? idk
It was basically the phone numbers on Google maps printed on paper.
@@NiekNooijens pretty sure he's joking...
Gen-Z be trying this with two huge PDFs on their iPads...
rest in peace grant

A phonebook and a weight vest = effective low-calibre kevlar. Now please read my disclaimer.
How do fish get in a rock quarry pond? if none were put there? I understand tadpoles because Frogs hop on land but fish dont yet I've seen minnows in quarry ponds that NO ONE added them into HOW? through the rain somehow?
Carried by birds that feed on fish, I would assume, pretty sure that's how our pond randomly acquired species of fish that we didn't put in there
Life uhh...finds a way.
At 4:40, the phone book includes "Robert E. Lee," and the narrator's name is Robert Lee. (Credited at 48:51.) Easter egg or coincidence?
Probably an easter egg

they literally said the 2nd one is busted in the end because of the extra gunpowder weight it would have to carry.
Hugo really is gorgeous, easily one of Tory's best creations.
But of the projectile in the movie can't hold anywhere close to 2,5 sticks of dynamite.
@@daringspino3446 true, but they also didn't test the metal cable instead of rope and other factors. The weight alone kills it.
Didn't need to be tested when they already know it would be too heavy. 😊
Uh how is "can we blow up a shark?" A myth??
They're testing the accuracy of the physics in the film.
those are not tanks...
If MK IVs are tanks, then APC is considered a tank. Especially in a non military context.
Dude relax a bit, it's an entertainment show. It's more important they speak in a way that the majority understands and can relate to.
😂
Tank collection ... not the biggest in the world... Total Bollocks...
To be fair, the episode says "private collection."
What ever life (fish, turtles frogs etc) lived in that pond there all dead because of this myth.
They use man made lakes e.c.t that have no water animals in it for that reason
@@RekkGaming dude they killed a shark in there...
Sorry but this is 2023, what's a phone book?
