Thank you for the great video. I put in pools and never worked with salt systems. I wanted to put one in my own pool. After seeing your video I will not be doing this. I have a all steel pool. Very informative.
Thanks for the great explanation! I recently installed a used, above ground pool, in my yard. I was thinking of switching to a salt system. My pool is all steel. I will stick with chlorine!
Awesome video! Thank you so much. This happened to us when we changed over to salt, and now in the process of buying an all resin pool. Now, if you were in South Carolina, I'd hire you in a minute!!!!
My wall is what's rusting out, not the top rails. I can feel the rust behind the liner! It is now leaking at the skimmer, with apparent rust forming! Looks like it about time for a replacement.
Thank You So much for this video!!!! I was about to drop some serious $$ on a salt system and I have a steel pool. It didn't even cross my mind that I would be rusting it out. I guess I will just stick with Pristine Blue.
We have the Pristine Blue system and have been pretty pleased, but we also have a pool that I think could run a Salt System. Very seriously considering changing out for this suppler. Going to research a little more before I bite the bullet.
I had a simple 10x10 30' Intex pool that I added a salt water pump and filter to. It worked great for 3 years and could of kept going. There was a bit of rust on the bars where the joints met, but that was about it. The cost of the pool and the fact that we didn't have to mess with chlorine chemicals was perfect for us. With the reseeding grass because of the CA drought and because our kids are growing fast we decided to put in a full deck and 8x14 52' pool. The new pool is not all resin, but we are hooking our salt water system anyway. We were lucky to find a pool with the size that fits our limited amount of space. And we know we are lucky if we can get 4 years without too much rusting and having to take the pool down. I understand that an all resin pool would be ideal, but that isn't always an option for people with limited space. I do hope you will still help and provide insight for people who are using the less than ideal pool with a salt water system. My biggest problem at the moment is my system. it says too much salt and then after adding salt it says too much. I'm thinking I need a new one. I would like to know what would be best for a 2,600 gallon pool. Thanks!
+LA Pink The Intex Krystal Clear model would be plenty for your size pool. Most people with Intex pools use the salt system even though it has corrosive effects. The benefit out weighs the corrosion in my opinion. But if you had a $8000 pool, then you would want the pool to be designed for salt.
I have been using an intex saltwater system on my above ground pool of 14 x 26 feet. It does work fine, has not faded my liner and helps keep the algae out a lot! I have to buy a new one every 1-2 years. It does taste salty when you get it in your mouth. It's super cheap and you can get one at WMart or KMart. You can feel the salt on your feet sometimes as it takes a while to dissolve like a few days.
We have a pool with a metal frame with the salt system. We have a protective wall cover. We just built this. We have a new house. It’s too late to change. I hope it lasts a decent amount of time.
I want to add a Wild Ride sliding board to a salt water pool. Will that hold up to the salt exposure or would you recommend another slide? Thanks Little Al
Could a person who has a vinyl pool with a steel top rails potentially put some kind of protective coating around the steel frame such as say a cut to fit pool noodle could this solve or at least shorten the possibility of the rust problem ? Or would you still not suggest it ? Im really disappointed to hear that i dont any longer have the saltwater option
I have an 8 year old Dough Boy brand 12"x 24" oval. Top rails are resin, but the outer supports and covers are steel with a steel liner wall ( I think it is steel ). Guess no salt for this guy! Just got rid of an Intex Ultra frame 9" x 18" with a salt system that did destroy they U frame supports every other year.
My pool was 2,000, if it were 8,000, I would definitely make sure it was all resin. I have a new question. We are now thinking hooking up solar heaters to help warm the pool. The pool sits in the shade and the best place to put the solar heaters would be our house's roof. Do you recommend a solar heater and what salt water pool pump would be strong enough to pump the water up to the roof?
+LA Pink For your size pool, I would recommend the coil solar heaters. They will work with the equipment you have now. If you get one that goes on the roof, then you would have to buy a new pump AND a new filter because the pump would be too big for the filter you are probably using now.
Quick question. I have an intex salt system as well. How often should I be adding salt to the pool?once in beginning of season or do you add periodically for maintenance?
I bought a for closure and I ha email plastic top caps that go around the pool. But how do I find out if the support beams are metal? The supporting wall panels are metal for sure
Hi Al. Im from Brazil and just bought a Salt System this week, because of your tips. Thanks. I have 2 questions. 1- My pool is made of concrete/bar metal walls and is ceramic coating. The salt system can corrode the metals inside the concrete walls? 2 - Can I use marine salt? Here in Brazil, salt for pools are very exepensive (around 20 dollars), but salt for animals (bovines and horses) are iodine free and way more cheaper (just 3 bucks). They also can be found at thin or thick granulation. Can I use it? and the granulation matters? Thanks alot, master.
I'm not a hundred percent sure if the salt can corrode through the concrete or not. I would doubt it but I'm just not a hundred percent sure. As far as salt for the pool I would highly recommend pool salt even if it's more expensive. Chemically it's the same stuff but the refining process is different and other salt can be really dirty and end up destroying yourself prematurely. Pool salt is a very clean salt.
I have a Coleman "16 X 48" pool and I think the poles are metal but I am not sure? The pieces that fit together just click in, but would the salt system cause an issue with the top of the pool?
Chad I have a DE filter with my Johnny Weismuller pool a Hayward DE filter I read the d e causes cancer should I switch? We follow All of your advice we do everything you tell us we keep our pool spotless and maintain it wonderfully and we do not have any d e going into the pool. Please share your thoughts.
So if a salt system would corrode an Intex pool would you just recommend a sand filter? I currently just have the pump that comes with the pool but I want to get the Daly system and the sand filter do you recommend it?
Realize your post is a few years old, just hoping you still monitor it. I am getting an Intex 9x18. I am thinking the joints for the metal railing and supports would be the most susceptible to rust. Is there a rust inhibitor that I could apply to all joints to slow down the salt penetration? Thinking I might plasti-dip, but that won't help the joints, as I am sure pushing them together will scrape it off
Different manufacturers make different top rails. Ultimately the answer is yes, but I'm not sure if the manufacturer of your pool makes a top track that is compatible with your model. You will have to check with the manufacturer on this.
Great video, wish I had seen this 3 years ago... I have replaced my Intex pool twice using the salt water system.. It also destroyed the metal ladder... Have been checking into a resin pool. The cost of the pool is quite expensive compared to to the metal ones. So know I have to decide whether to invest in the resin to use salt.. Which I love, or go back with chlorine.. Thanks for the information.. Learned alot...
+Velvet Blizzard I think of it as an investment, because using salt is so much cheaper than chlorine, even if you spend more for a resin pool you will get your money beack over time using salt.
have intex A/G pool..18'x52"...purchased for wife to rehab after knee surgery.....looking at salt system...is there a way i could "coat" the metal frame and dupport legs in opxy resin to help avert the rust issue? coat as ll parts prior to installation....then coat over "seams" after installation?
+debra moore I have yet to find any "coating" that will help. I've seen a lot of people try different stuff without great result, not to say there isn't something out there for it.
I'm just wondering if I can use salt instead of chlorine in our small 8' x 30" pool for our grandchildren - it has pvc laminated walls? It has a pump that comes with it. I don't know much but chlorine is harsh. Thanks, Susie
Above Ground Pros any suggestion or instructional website? What salt do you use, how much? Special for pools,? or the same salt as water softener? - oh, also will it hurt the pump?? We're hoping to set-up today, but do not know how
Is there rust inhibitor that can be applied to the rails of an already set up pool? My pool is on its second summer and im really tired of the cost and maintenance. Ok so I have an 18ft above ground Intex Easy Set pool that is made entirely of a thick vinyl with absolutely no metals or steels. Ive got it supercharged with a big 1hp pump & Sand filter to keep my pool crystal clear 24/7. I even run an auto pool vaac cleaner every other day to keep the inside surface spotless. i was told that in order to convert my pool into a salt water pool all I needed to do was add the required amount of pool salt into my pool and that was it. I am now seeing all this stuff about the different salt water generators. What will happen if I salt my pool without any of these generators ??
You'll have a salty pool that's all. The salt is only in the pool so that'll go through a generator and be converted into chlorine. You'll have to add a chlorine generator if you want to use salt.
My intex came with a saltwater system option . It lasted 4 years and now I have that nightmare ! Now I’ve got to invest in a resin pool . Issue is some say all resin but then most say hybrid . Like to know the best resin pool.
We have an Intex 16" x 32" Ultra Frame Rectangular Above Ground Pool. The only steel on this pool is the frame "outside" the pool which does not come in contact with the water. The only other steel is the top railing which slips "inside" the pool liner and the only part that is not covered by the pool liner are the corner sections, which may or may not get splashed with a little water. Are you saying that a Saltwater system will not work on this type of pool?
A lot of people use salt systems on those pool, but it will speed up the rust process. Its not even so much the water contact, but the salted vapor that comes off of the water that damages the steel components.
I need help! my intex pool is being over taken with algae. my ph is a little high and the cl is right now. I have boosted the salt system. and it doesn't seem to help. what do I need to do?
Believe my top railings, caps and uprights are resin. Don’t think the top and bottom track are though. I could replace the top track easily. Pool is just about 2-3 years old. What’s your opinion
What is a more honest manufacturer Company of a salt cell I got really screwed by Hayward no my salt cell my warranty was not up and it split on the seam a and nothing else was wrong with equipment and they would not replaces my salt cell.
+John West that's the standard in salt water pools but keep in mind that the wall resting out is seldom the issue. It's usually everything above the waterline.
I disagree with his statement that you can not use a salt system on a steal pool. That is misleading info. Yes the cheap steal frames on an intex pool will rust with in four years. But good above ground pool with a steal wall will not rust out any faster than it would with conventional pool chemicals. A saltwater pool is nowhere near the salt content of the ocean. And you can always just replace the top rail without replacing the entire pool if you had to. On my steal pool I took my top rails and recoated them inside and out with rust preventive paint. I snowmobile in the winter and I know first hand what salt can do to steal. That being said you can and many folks do use salt systems on steal pools.
I can’t see where your going with this....yes a saltwater pool is less salt content than the ocean...but let’s say someone adds too much salt by accident then that splashes on the steel. And then they add too much again, it will rot the metal. I have a 40yr old snowmobile, it’s never seen salt...there isn’t an ounce of rust on it but I’m sure if I introduce salt to it...I’m sure it will rust out. Remember they are the PRO’s...and his advice is intended to make your pool last a long time.
My left ear really appreciates this video.
Brilliant, thanks for the great info. And grounding the salt system and pump with a piece of rebar was very helpful

A salt system is a CHLORINE generator not a filter system. You need a sand filter no matter what.

Salt water will eat the frame up over time
Can you recommend a salt water system an resin pool manufacturer that we can trust? Considering a brand new install in South Eastern Ohio! We have had a difficult time locating any!
Jennifer Fulton I like Cornelius Pools for resin pools and the Hayward AquaTrol for salt systems. That's a good start.
Thanks so much.

I've seen them lastfor 3 years and I seen them last for 9 years so it really just depends
How long would it take to corrode a pool like the one I listed below?
Rhonda Hogan That really depends. I've seen it take 5-6 years and I've had a few people tell me 3 years.
Thank you, also can u use table salt or does it have to be pool salt?
pool salt
what will happen if you use table salt?
crystal contreras
Water purifier salt, pool salt, and table salt are the exact same chemical. Sodium Chloride. There only difference is there cut. Table salt is cut very fine. When they cut the salt this fine they use a flowing agent. This flowing agent can cause a gray ring around the water line of the pool. Technically you can use it, but at the cost of a grey bath tub ring.
ok thank you much!!
can I use the salt system on one of those intex easy set up pools from Wal-Mart? I think the material of the pool is polystrength PVC
Yes you can.
abovegroundpros What do you need to get that set up? We purchased a 15foot above ground pool from walmart, and want to get it set up with salt before buying all the chemicals needed to chlorinate it. So confused, and feel pressure because the water is in, and my boys have been swimming all day. I don't want the 4000 gallons we just put into it to get gross and slimy!!
jasongunn77
Put a little granular chlorine in the pool to keep it sanitized until you get your salt system up and running. This will keep the water clean and give you time to get things in order.
What do you suggest for metal above ground pools? I don't like the way Chlorine makes my skin feel and the Pristine Blue is a bit better but again, it makes our skin feel funny. We wanted to use salt because it makes the water sooooo nice. Any suggestions?

I have a Intex Ultra frame pool 22' x 52" gray one.. is this ok. for saltwater..
Did you ever try the saltwater system? I have the same pool and was thinking about adding a saltwater pump.
@@wellsmichelle31 it will be ok for about 5 years, why I see it is that 100 dollars a year, to me it's worth it.
I think mine is on its 3rd year and the top T connectors are rusting through.
Do you have to change your pump when going to salt water?
No
My Pool has extruded aluminum rails supports and wall. Is that ok?
Not for salt no.
On an Intex, the metal frame is going to suffer over time. The rest of the pool would be OK. Just keep this in mind.
can you define "over time"
Ive seen the pools rust out in 2 seasons and Ive seen them last for 6, but 4 seasons seems to be the average life I see with a salt aystem on them.
My intex came with a saltwater system option . It lasted 4 years and now I have that nightmare ! Now I’ve got to invest in a resin pool . Issue is some say all resin but then most say hybrid . Like to know the best resin pool.
The fact that the pool is vinyl is fine, but you will want to make sure that the framework is all resin and not steel.
Would it be OK to use a saltwater system on a ultra frame intex pool 22x52?
Most people do but it will corrode the metal frame over time.
Someone said to spray a sealant rust protection on it and it helps?
+Michelle Wells it does help but it won't stop it completely
We have an Intex 16" x 32" Ultra Frame Rectangular Above Ground Pool. The only steel on this pool is the frame "outside" the pool which does not come in contact with the water. I've had my Intex metal frame above ground pool for 1 yr and use salt water system. It is falling apart right now from the salt water
how about a resin pool with stainless steel wall
+SHRIMP11112 if it's all resin with a stainless steel wall you should be fine
heading to the pool place now to look at pool. it suppose to be salt water compatible.
The resin pools are way too expensive!
do I have to use a saltwater filtering pump with a saltwater filtering system or can I use a regular filtering pump with the saltwater system?
+Melodie Huffman No, just a normal pump and filter system.
Thank you 😀

my filter is saying to much salt. but my test strip say it is low.
+Phyllis Moody It probably needs calibrating: www.poolsupplyworld.com/blog/how-to-recalibrate-your-hayward-aqua-rite-turbo-cell/
Believe my top railings, caps and uprights are resin. Don’t think the top and bottom track are though. I could replace the top track easily. Pool is just about 2-3 years old. What’s your opinion
Just be prepared that it will rudy out all your metal parts. The wall may be suspect as well.
A resin pool still has a steel or aluminum wall so salt will still be a no go.
What is a more honest manufacturer Company of a salt cell I got really screwed by Hayward no my salt cell my warranty was not up and it split on the seam a
and nothing else was wrong with equipment and they would not replaces my salt cell.
The now have them with resin coated steel walls.....
+John West resin coated walls is a very thin spray of resin within the paint and wont prevent rust from a salt system.
The pool I just bought is a all resin saltwater pool set up, but has metal walls coated in resin.
+John West that's the standard in salt water pools but keep in mind that the wall resting out is seldom the issue. It's usually everything above the waterline.
Simple fix corrosion block wherever you have connections inside the tubes and wherever there are pens
NOTHING will stop corrosion from salt water.
I'll stick with mineral
I disagree with his statement that you can not use a salt system on a steal pool. That is misleading info. Yes the cheap steal frames on an intex pool will rust with in four years. But good above ground pool with a steal wall will not rust out any faster than it would with conventional pool chemicals. A saltwater pool is nowhere near the salt content of the ocean. And you can always just replace the top rail without replacing the entire pool if you had to. On my steal pool I took my top rails and recoated them inside and out with rust preventive paint. I snowmobile in the winter and I know first hand what salt can do to steal. That being said you can and many folks do use salt systems on steal pools.
no offense, but it's steel
I can’t see where your going with this....yes a saltwater pool is less salt content than the ocean...but let’s say someone adds too much salt by accident then that splashes on the steel. And then they add too much again, it will rot the metal. I have a 40yr old snowmobile, it’s never seen salt...there isn’t an ounce of rust on it but I’m sure if I introduce salt to it...I’m sure it will rust out. Remember they are the PRO’s...and his advice is intended to make your pool last a long time.
Resin is a generic term. Salt water rusts metal? Wow, very informative🙃
