- In this video we are taking a look at the Irwin Vise-Grip 8" 2078300 self-adjusting wire strippers. It will strip wires from 10-24 AWG and features an adjustable stopper to control the length of the strip. It can also crimp 10-22 AWG insulated and non-insulated terminals as well as 7-9mm ignition terminals. It can also strip the outer sheath on multi conductor cables. Overall, it is a good set of wire strippers for most around the house or automotive tasks but does tend to have issues with wires that have a clear plastic coating on top of the insulation.

Just bought this tool and yes it struggles with the plastic coated Romex ( and other plastic coated wires)... however I just discovered a trick that makes it work every time! Place wire in as normal , then bend it towards the back of the pliers on the gripping side. Then pull as normal. The bending of the wire keeps it from slipping in the teeth and gives the results you want...give it a try :) Works all the time

I like this idea. I actually have taken to pushing down harder on the clamp with my thumb if it slips or holding the wire in such a way it can't slip.

I'm an electrician, and use it every single day. I can't do without it ! I use this at my place of work, customizing Vans, Buses, and RV's. Trust me you can't go wrong, it's my number ONE tool for wire stripping. You'll be glad if you buy one. I do not use it for crimping purposes, a I use another tool that does a better job.

for the coated ones. just put your finger on top of the grabbing mechanism and apply a bit of pressure as you squeeze the tool. works everytime
Video improvement suggestion: get more lights, set the aperture of your camera more closed (higher f/#), then manual focus your camera to where your hands are normally at

Thanks for posting this. Great review and very helpful. I recently purchased these and was a bit annoyed when trying to strip the plastic coated wires. After seeing this I know to hit it 2 or 3 times and they will usually strip. Still easier and more efficient than the regular stripping tool where you have to squeeze and pull.

I must have a lemon. The 12v thicker landscape wire would not strip. It was hardened and old but the grabber on the left simply would not clamp down on it to hold It while the right would try to strip
There are only two controls on the thing, and I hoped you'd explain the micro-adjust. It was nice to see you can swing the depth gauge out of the way - that didn't occur to me.
I had the same difficulty trying to strip two romex wires simultaneously, but when I tried each wire individually, it worked perfectly.

Thank you for this review! I had the same issue with the plastic sheeting on the wire and thought there was an issue with the strippers. Now I know to do it multiple times.
Or just use another type of stripper for those wires. No wire stripper works well for all types of wire, and the self-adjusting type does poorly on any wire with slick and/or extra-firm insulation.

Thank you for talking about plastic coated wire. I use Anderson powerpole wires which has the red and black wires held together by a sort of thick clear plastic coating which make the gripping action really slick.
I can do that with all Sheathings off, outer sheath and red and black sheath.

I have used this stripper and found that this is only useful for stripping individual wires and not a cable having two, three or more wires means a two core, three core or multi core cables like computer networking cables having many wires inside an insulating cover. When such a cable is stripped using this stripper, it strips everything that is outer as well as the inner insulations of the wires so we can't only strip the outer insulation and then strip the wires inside one by one according to desired length. If a cable is to be stripped then we'll have to use a sharp knife to first cut the outer insulation and then use this stripper to strip the wires inside. Also, we need to manually adjust the pressure knob again and again by trial and error else it may sometimes damage some strands so it's a bit semi-automatic type and not fully automatic
I replied to one of your sub-comments above... I bought a pair of these last night and tried them out on a bunch of different conduit types and wire gauges I happened to have lying around to decide if this tool would be right for a project I'm working on. I was able to strip Romex for a couple of different gauges and various gauges of stranded and solid copper wires by setting the grip to suit the cable. Flat Romex seemed to need the same grip setting as the wire gauge in the conduit, but round multi-conductor cables worked best when the grip was set much looser than for the encased wires - about 2/3 the pressure that worked well for stranded copper wire of similar thickness. In that sense, you're right that they're not fully automatic. Still, even when I set the grip much stronger than needed for the gauge of stranded wire, I never managed to cut the encased wire or break strands in a stranded copper wire. Maybe aluminum strands break more easily, and as usual YMMV.
@@sbern714 But, I have some double insulation two core flat cables which have thinner wires inside outer sheath may be of 22 guage and when I try stripping the outer sheath all insulation is stripped leaving behind only the copper wires. Any suggestions?

@@abrown372 single or double gang boxes make no difference. there are many kinds of Romex wires. your question is not specific enough to have any real answer for you.
Make sure you say go ahead alot while doing this to. Just like this guy
I spin the insulation after it is cut before i pull it off it keeps you from getting poked by the wire, it twists the wire ready for tinning with solder.

Exactly my experience. It will not strip most of the plastic coated wire I come across. I too tried messing with the adjustments but 80% of the time it’s a no go. I did have the chance to use a different brand being used by another electrician and it worked flawlessly. Unfortunately I did not get the brand name. I paid the extra to get this one because of the name but I am very disappointed.
I may reach out to the other electrician to get the name of his tool, buy it and send this one back.
The quality of the materials used to make this tool seems very good it just appears that it fails to bit the wire sufficiently to strip the insulation.

I have the same problem. I have to use another stripping plier to make a cut then use this tool. It will work.
@@mikehoang9246I found a pair called " Southwire Box Jar Strippers 👍👍 they fit in a single gang box. I just transferred from commercial work Which is 90% Mc Cable and conduit. I'm surprise about the limited number of tools to strip ROMEX from inside of electrical boxes 🤔
How about coax cable such as that used for radio or cable tv? Coax has an outer jacket, inner copper braid, and smaller inner insulation surrounding core wire... Will these strippers work for that?
Very good demostration but bad video recording, the camera kept switching focus because of the logo of your table mat. Next time please use a plain color table mat without graphics (especially human), so the camera wont think its a human face and trying to focus on it. As for the logo, you can simply embed it as watermark during post video edit.

i wanted to learn how to use the settings, as it doesnt seem to strip but Rip the Plastic. So i am guessing the Jaws are not gripping as much as they should. also some Cables i have are coming from the other side, that means i ever turn the Strippers up side down to face then Downwards
Is the insulated crimping jaw also self adjusting? I see all 3 of the red, blue and yellow dot indicators located in the one crimping jaw. Whereas the non-insulated crimping jaw seems to have a couple of different sized options?

I have one of these and am wondering if it works to remove the outer sleeve of Romex? I am afraid it will cut into the inner wires
there are no cutters on these wire strippers at all. unfortunately mine didn't work for anything. but i did not know how to adjust them. so my next step is to adjust that 'macro adjustment' screw, i guess. but there is no blade to cut anything. the tool just squeezes a wire & insulation/sleeve and then pulls it apart. and thus ripping the insulation on the outside while leaving the stronger metal on the inside. that's how it works. so it rips, not cuts. i don't think your concern is any problem for this tool.

I don't get it. How do people strip 14/2 romex in production if this tool - supposedly the best one out there - fails miserably? I get the exact result as at t=256 in this video. One way to solve this is to bend the wire down around the left jaw - but that means doubling the stripping time for individual wires. That matters in production, not in hobby.

Didn't work for me at all with the KnuKonceptz Kord Kable 12 Gauge. It grabs on the sheath and was never able to sever it and ended up stretching the sheath. The wire cutter also didn't cut clean. Totally useless for me.

That's odd. I have 2 pairs of these and both do it without an issue. If you bought all three at the same time maybe there was an issue with a production run
I also bought the Irwin Vice-Grip Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper from Lowes and it came with the grip pressure adjustment knob set all the way loose. Set that way, the tool did not work at all. But once I figured out what that knob was for, I tightened it down A LOT and it started working for 12/3 Romex, both for stripping the Romex cable sheathing and the individual encased wires. I did have to squeeze twice each time, but it was still much easier than using manual wire strippers. Once I set the grip pressure tight enough to strip the individual wires, I was able to strip the encasing flat Romex at the same setting with a single squeeze without any apparent damage to the encased wires.
Experimenting with different multi-conduit cables and different wire gauges, I found that the tool worked well for 24-gauge stranded wires with the grip set VERY tight using a pair of pliers and for 6-gauge stranded copper if loosened with pliers and then tightened down with just my fingers. My approach was to loosen the grip and then tighten it again until I found the right setting for each gauge of cable or wire. I didn't manage to make the tool damage the encased wire or break any strands of stranded wires at any grip setting, but I wasn't trying for that.
I'm not sure if maybe the grip pressure adjustment knob is set that loose at the factory, or if Lowes does it, or maybe customers in the store tend to play with it. But I had to tighten the knob down considerably using a pair of pliers before the tool I bought started working as demonstrated in this video. Hand-tightening the knob only worked for the thickest (6-gauge) wire I tried, and did NOT work for a multi-conduit cable of a similar size. For every other cable or wire, I had to use my pliers to tighten that knob.

Probably not. The self-adjusting type of strippers almost never works well on Teflon and THHN insulated wires. No wire stripper works well on all types of wires; it is why they make multiple types of strippers.

Thats called THHN insulation btw. And also the correct term to Romex is "nm" which stands for non-metaillic

I had these for a few years now. They are ok bur really only ok especially with thinner cables. the plastic length adjustment of course broke very early. Any quality tool you would be able to buy this part but not fore these. I would not buy them again.

I'm sorry, but this tool is a piece of junk if you're primarily working with 10, 12 and 14 ga Romex cable and wire. I can strip sheathing and wire faster manually, than I can with ANY auto stripper. However, this tool DOES work well on 18 and higher gauge cable and wire (ie: thermostat, and Cat 3, 5, 6, etc), so I did keep it...
I put my ginger in the jaws with romex for more pressure and it works good

Not sure if this guy has the magic touch but this tool is garbage. It took a dozen squeezes just to take off the coating of a single 12/2 wire!! They wouldn’t even remove the yellow coating to get to three interior wires on the same 12/2 wire. This guy has the best and easiest to follow directions but the tool is extremely inconsistent. My other squeeze stripper tool is 1000% better and strips the wire on the first squeeze every time. I’ve been looking for a tool that’ll strip everything from the exterior coating down to the individual wires. I’ve been remodeling for 20+ years and have yet to find a tool that’ll do this!!!!
Same here regarding the common task of stripping 14/2 Romex. I would like to see an automatic tool that actually works on 14/2.

These really do not work on PTFE wire, no matter the gauge the tool offers to do. I say, don't buy and mine went back to store.

Good thing I've got a good imagination, the autofocus of your camera made it nearly impossible to see what's going on and just gave me a headache.
meanwhile electricians will still be using common T-strips because you just cant get one of those fancy over engineered over priced tools in to the places we need to get in to to do actual "work".
