Uncle Ben being an actual character in this is awesome. I still think one of the strengths of this book is how strongly written the supporting cast is, thier lives don't just revolve around Peter
Great issue and personally for me this is what Spider-Man should be right now in the mainstream marvel universe that actually treats Peter Parker and Mary Jane with respect which I approve.
My job is that way, too. I’m often able to pop in after work to pick up the books I want. The people at my shop know I like this series and automatically set aside new issues for me.
This felt like a comic version of Insomniac’s first spider-man game with all the subtle similarities. I loved it. Things definitely won’t end well for Ben, and sadly, I think he already knows his time is up
This is my favorite issue so far. Peter’s full range of personality is on display, highlighted by Mr. Negative’s powers and comments. There’s also a whole essay’s worth of differences from the main universe that make the whole cast stronger characters that genuinely makes me excited to keep reading about this version of Spiderman.
I’m actually okay with the cover bait here because it’s paralleling Felicia’s situation. Her involvement is hyped up by someone else she has no control over, and her obvious reluctance to be here is demonstrated by her not getting any lines. Like she’s literally lacking a voice in the situation.
Love this series, but kinda noticing how deceiving the covers are in this series. Also love how catty (no pun intended) Otto is being when talking to Peter as he clearly wants to be a hero.
I think this issue does a really good job explaining why so many people gravitate so hard towards this series & more specifically, this Spider-Man There's no doubt this Peter has it significantly better than his so-called main universe counterpart, but that doesn't mean the problem isn't there. In fact, they're still very much both Peter Parker & Spider-Man's problem. The difference & the crazy thing however, is that Peter actually sat down with his wife, talked to her in the most god honest way, & most importantly, talked to her like a husband & an adult. This doesn't solve anything because there isn't a solution but it was 2 adults having a rationalize discussion regarding the superhero life. And Ben over here only reinforces that notion. Recently, there's been a flux of loved one reacting very negatively to any superheros' double life. They usually feel betrayed & what not. Ben on the other hand told him specifically he's proud of him while also believing that May would be just as proud. Instead of berating Peter, he told him to be extra careful just like MJ did. Damn good. My only nitpicks has to be that I have an incredibly difficult time believing that Octavius doesn't have a a way to return the call to Peter in this day & age. Especially since he's a genius. The other nitpick I have is the cover bait cover. Nothing new the world of comic book, but it's very click baity. Felecia only showed up in 1 panel & that's it. Seems like a waste. I'm very curious to see how they'll handle in all this. Cuz when Felecia showed up, she really didn't look like she wanted to be there. Not to mention she didn't even have any dialuge Overall, still the best comic book out there & then some
Well said!!! Yes, this Peter/Spider-man is so vastly different from the 616 as he has a family and supporting cast members, unlike 616 Peter who has pushed away his aunt and friends
I swear i see this comic and i completely understand why so many people like it and the art is more polished and the way peter and MJ talk they legitimately look like a married couple should be... a solid team and confidants
Thanks for reviewing this week's USM, Joel😊! Just like you, I'm not happy with the ol', bait-&-switch tactic Marvel used here with this version of Felicia Black Cat showing up on the cover, but not making any official introduction in the issue itself, and just appears briefly for one panel.
Even with the cover Bait, this book is still better than The latest issue of ASM. Peter, MJ and Ben like actual functional adults and treat each other like family with dignity. I think that’s the main thing here. The characters all feel to have all their dignity intact.
This was another home run, but I need to know more about the new Black Cat. I feel that too many people know about Peter's secret identity and that needs to change.
Shh, quiet. Nick Lowe might just get in the way and remove Hickman before he can finish writing the story he wants to tell (they did the same thing when Renew Your Vows out sold the main Spider-man book and put an inferior writer, Jody Houser, on it, leading to poor sales and ultimately cancelled!!)
@@Andrew-ym2gw just a different artist for this issue. Marco Checchetto can’t draw every single issue or otherwise he’d get burned out. But he’ll be back for issues 12 and 13
personally i think the art is good in general but i feel like this new artists take on the design and world feels more polished, the art of the previous issues feel a bit sketch like especially with MJ and i know she is 35 but still. Don't get wrong the art is still amazing regardless it looked a little rough in style
This series had me at Peter and MJ talking and acting like adults unlike their main universe counterparts.
Same here!!

Good issue. A little odd seeing Felicia without white hair but I can get use to it or maybe something happens. Who knows.
Probably Mr. Negative will have something to do with it.
This book makes me glad that my job 5 minutes down the street from a comic book store.

An adult conversation, words of wisdom and actual heart in a Spider-Man comic seriously I nearly fainted it's like reading classic ditko
David Messina's art is fantastic!

I guarantee that all of us who played the game played that music when reading Spider-Man fighting the demons.

Perhaps superior spiderman down the line?
@ Eh, maybe, but probably not for a while.
Oh, this is foreshadowing he will become Doc Ock down the line

I’m kind of surprise Walter Hardy/black cat survived the fall.
The sinister six has to attack the next issue. Plus I wonder who the mayor of new York is.
Maybe Kingpin himself. You never know with The Maker is pulling strings in this universe
Excellent issue this along with miles morales spider man and the spder men series are the vest spidey books out there today

How controversial was this cover, am I right?
Indeed. Typical cover bait
