Dude, I am glad there are people confident and knowledgeable enough to do this kind of thing. Keeping all those parts straight.... phew.
That's how a mechanic should work. Clean, organized and equiped. Congrats! Keep awesome.
After 8 years, I still come back for this series
Your videos are way better than the crap "mechanic" shows that are on the discovery channel. Keep up the mad scientist stuff!
I think you chose the perfect car for this project. It's obviously been well cared for, and the extra cost of the vehicle saved you mountains of work at the end. It's also obvious in the way you carefully took it all apart, that this would be a beautiful, well organized project in the end. When you did finish, the entire car (electronics, suspension, brakes, interior/exterior) were all taken care of. A car you will want to keep for a very long time.
Thank you Fred, I appreciate the kind words very much!
2 things struck me watching this that come through loud and clear. First most guys think they are organized but you actually are, and second, it's easy to see you are having the time of your life building your dream! 2 thumbs up!
Jim Stainer Thank you for saying those things Jim! I do get a little carried away with the organization and I'm definitely having an excellent time and learning tons of great new things. I appreciate the info you've shared too, it's helped me in my planning!
I really love your videos, Tom. You make it look so easy, with everything so clean, neat and organized. (Thanks to the miracle of video editing!) I know it's a tough job to disassemble a car completely like you're doing. Why is it necessary to COMPLETELY take the car apart? That's a LOT of work!
Keep up the entertaining and humorous videos, and I can't wait to see what happens next!
Completely taking the car apart on both sides of the firewall is needed because that's going to get hacked up. T56 bellhousings are huge compared to stock. It also gives him a chance to sort out the wiring outside the car so as to make a clean harness.
Samniss Arandeen You're probably correct, but wow, what a lot of work! Cars these days are assembled like Swiss watches. Tom is very methodical and detail-oriented, but it would be so easy to screw up.
Rick Hilton That's why these swaps take so long. All that little stuff eats away at you.
Rick Hilton Thank you as always for the kind words Rick! Videos like this do make big jobs like this look easier than they are. Samniss answered this below, but yes it must be disassembled for the firewall/tunnel modifications and other driveline upgrades. I'll be showing you the whole process, I hope you enjoy it! I'll be posting the next video on Feb 27th, thank you for watching sir!
Super stoked you got a little sponsorship from Summit! That's so awesome!
Can't wait for the nest episode! You're the man Tom.
SpaceManDawn Thank you my friend, I appreciate you saying that! I'll be posting the next video on Feb. 27th. See ya then!
And - THAT - is how you become a Miata expert
Thank you for the kind words, I suppose tearing things apart is a pretty good way to learn about the inner workings!
I feel like a Miata expert already just from watching these videos lol! I've almost done as much work on my 94 Integra that I've owned for 18 years now. Including pulling the dash twice, and the engine once. And believe me that Miata dash looked WAY easier to get out with no roof, than my Integra with a fixed roof.
Must be nice having a big clean garage with a lift
Ikr, imagine doing this outside
Fantastic videos!
Its very nice and easily accomplishable
It is nice :)
@Charles If it was so easy everyone who wanted it would have one.
Now that's what I call a COMPLETE teardown
This series quickly went from Oh cool... I think I could do this... To.... OMG.. he took the whole car apart.. LOL
😁 yeah, things escalated quickly
The taking apart isn't the issue, it is the putting it back together where it starts to become difficult. Putting it back together and have it work in neigh impossible, and putting it back together correctly you might as well call a wizard. Let's see Mr. Wizard work... on to part 3!
The complexity of a car is astounding.... it's incredible that modern cars are so reliable
I'll just carefully move this subrame out of the WEEEEEEEEE
Johnny Taylor Haha! I wanted to ride it down a big hill!
love your videos man i showed my girlfriend on valentines day and she didn't seem as amused lol
Thanks Johnny! It takes a special type of woman to be able to tolerate my videos haha!
Nobody expects the Mr. Regular impression!
We need to figure out how to get Mr Regular to review one of Tom's cars.
YES!
It is almost Zen the way I am transfixed by Tom's meticulous videos. I think I am compensating for my own complete lack of patience. After watching this I can go through the weekend feeling like I have paid attention to details and accomplished something with vicarious perfection.
Looking forward to the next installment.
trefod Thank you for the very kind words and I'm glad you enjoy the videos as much as I enjoy making them! I suppose the Zen comes through in the videos because my time in the garage is my chance to quietly unwind from the craziness of day to day life. Thanks for watching and I'll be posting up the next one on Feb 27th.
This guy has me browsing summit racing website everyday ... Addicted by watching these videos ... Got my credit card maxed out on 20k can't wait to get into my build.
The level of care and detail you put into your projects is truly inspiring. Can't wait for future installments of this awesome project!
DSM907Maniak Thank you for saying that and I'm glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks for watching and I'll be posting the next update (part 3) on Friday, Feb 27th.
I marvel at the engineering and development needed to build an automobile. Simply, amazing.
This is brilliant. I started working on cars about 16 months ago, and I've worked on four since then. I currently have my own garage, nothing like yours, but it is something that I can call mine, and your videos are a great inspiration. I am a college student so my budget holds me back most of the time, but I am really interested in dedicating my youtube page to these kinds of videos. Your content is awesome, and this series is fantastic.
This is awesome! I've never really seen someone tear down a car and just leave it's body behind it's amazing.
That Miata was a great find! It is impeccable!
MikeVonDoom Thank you sir, yes it's in great shape.
WAS impeccable
Holy crap dude. I knew it would take a lot of work to put a V8 in a Miata, but I wouldn't have thought that you would basically take the entire care apart. But it is amaxing to see how simple the Miata is under it's skin. They one of my favorite cars.
Thanks Michael, the Miata is a wonderful little piece of engineering! The LSx conversion is a pretty big project for an amateur like me.
Amateur my ass. I see the quality of work you do. It does look like a huge project. I think i would rather just build a Factory Five MK4 Cobra Kit. Same concept of big engine little car, but everything is meant for the V8.
Michael Snyder Thanks Michael, I would say that building a Factory Five Cobra would be a bigger job overall as that requires (in most cases) disassembling a donor mustang and then building a complete car from a pile 'o' parts.
True, but to what i have seen it doesn't require welding. Which i don't have any experience in.
Michael Snyder Oh yeah, that makes sense. I'm sure they have all of the pre-fabricated parts available, which is nice and is a serious time and frustration saver.
Just the motivation i need to go continue work on my 1992 NA rebuild, thank you!
Rolo McFlurry Excellent and I'm glad I can help! Get it done my man!!
Tom, I think there's a lot of people out there that don't realize time and effort that you put into your video's. this one was excellent as always keep up the good work.
Tim McNeil Hi Tim and thank you for saying that! You're right, they are very time consuming. Most days I wake up at 3:30 or 4 and work on editing, writing, planning, etc. I love sharing it and talking with everyone though, it's the best part!
Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to share your projects with us...!!!!
philr300 Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed it!
After watching guys buy a Miata and rice it out, and then come to this, I think I like this a lot more. Keep up the good work.
This must be the cleanest Miata i have EVER seen. Well done on finding it and also seriously cool the way you label everything. awesome vid
Thank you for the kind words sir, I looked a long time to find this one. 👍🏻
Tom you have the best build on the internet right now! I can't wait until the car is complete!!!
David S Thank you David, I appreciate you saying that! I can't wait either, I just keep telling myself to be patient and slow down to ensure all of the details are right.
I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos, your constant use of whimsey is highly amusing. Keep up the good work, you're one of the few true professionals mechs on YT
Great video. I am overwhelmed with the amount of parts you have to keep track of for reassembly. Awesome project!
Finally something good to watch while he finishes project Firebolt. How did I not watch this earlier is beyond me 🤣 thanks tom for the great content
Thanks for checking it out Juan! 👍🏻. You’re welcome sir
I appreciate your consistent PPE usage
You may be the most thorough and organized disassembler I've ever seen..>!!! Inspiring....
I also can't believe how much of the car you took apart..... More inspiring....
4:32 - "All 322 wire harness clips..." FUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuu
Actually 323 clips...
This guy went way too overboard. First rule of an NB dash pull? Leave the radio and HVAC controls. They are part of the dash harness and can stay in the dash during removal.
Seems like he disconnected every single thing he saw under the dash before trying to remove which is a typical noob mistake lol
ScreaminEagle1555, that’s why, if I were hiring someone to do this job, I’d hire him rather than you.
Back to watch this series again. And again I wonder if this car was ever even driven. So clean!
Thank you Keith!
Awesome to see a proper tear down of an NB. Great job, always great to see someone do some quality work.
Thank you Lance, I appreciate that!
Boy this is much different than any at home project
Man...you make short work of it Tom...That Miata is in really good shape..most of the parts you pulled off look brand new still..nice.Keep up the good work Tom...
Craig Cundiff Thank you Craig! It's been a fun project.
Awesome breakdown/tear down video, I'm super pumped to watch the countless video's, until it's slaying rear tires
Thank you sir, glad you're enjoying them! I'll be posting the next one on Feb. 27th, which will be action packed! :-D
I would have to say, that I am glad i found this channel and I cannot wait to watch more videos from you. Very well put together and I absolutely LOVE that shop!
DG Stevo Thank you sir, I appreciate the kind words!
The mailbox thing is probably the gas tank vapor capture system's charcoal canister.
I think he's well aware of that. :P
FrankTheCat Thank you yes, I was just goofing around.
wow , you didn't realise such a obvious sarcrasm? shame on you ....
Absolutely wow- your video skills and mechanical skills are amazing!
2019 and serious garage envy. And project envy. I like the idea of a crated V8, I've had some ideas and finding teardowns/rebuilds doesn't seem as easy as it used to be. The installation kit was the next question. You disassembled far more of the car than I expected though.
Thank you for the kind words sir! Glad you enjoyed the videos.
Those Miata’s are very nicely put together.
I'm glad I found this series.I'm currently rebuilding my 1990 Nissan 300ZX TT, and have always wanted to build a boosted LQ4 in a Z3 or Z4 and this is giving me more incentive to do so.Keep up the videos, you have a new subscriber!
james harrison Thank you James and I'm glad you did too! Good luck with your 300ZX and a turbo LQ4 in a Z3/4 would be nuts! Haha!
Wow Tom, you are definitely the man for this job. So meticulous. Awesome.
Mach5sun Thank you for saying that, it has definitely been a learning experience in many ways! Glad you're enjoying it!
Started that swap with a really nice car all those parts look extra clean.
You make it look so easy! Goodluck on the build!
I am on pins and needles. Great video, can not wait for the next installment. Please don't stop sharing with us. Thanks
Bediasman Thank you sir and I'm glad you're looking forward to them! Next video will be posted on Feb 27th.
Looking good Tom! The sub frame assembly was awesome all in one piece, too bad it had to get torn down. But it's all for the greater good! Can't wait to see how the bay and tunnel will need to be massaged to get the LS3 to fit!
bfdtyper Thank you sir! You're going to like the next video, LOTS of action coming up in that one on Feb 27th.
Rewatching this again under the covid lockdown and loving it again😘
Hey brother love your amount of detail and attention your enthusiasm is phenomenal keep up the great work
I like your kind to everything in work nicely cleanly and regularly ...
I would just do this, exactly like you!
This miata build series is awesome!! Keep it up Tom!
I’ve literally never seen anyone who works on cars or trucks wear all the protective equipment that your wearing. OSHA would be proud!
Nice. So happy Summitt is sponsoring this series. Fun episode, made my Friday. Hope you're EBaying some of the leftovers.
Murray P Cakes Thank you Murray, that's great to hear! I am honored that the Summit Racing folks are part of my dream build and they are fantastic people to work with. Look for the next video on Feb 27th!
You answer all comments, just want to say respect!
And really nice project!
Thank you Nikola, I appreciate the support!
it is so incredibly satisfying watching this video.
Nice work Tom! I can't believe you used an ACTUAL photo of your attic!
Thank you Joe! Haha, it's a little spooky up there!
Damn, all disassembled I can really appreciate all the engineering that went into that. Such nice packaging, wow. Very cool.
MrSlowestD16 Glad you enjoyed it man, it is a view that you don't get to se too often. :-D
Tom's Turbo Garage It's such a well engineered piece, too. That's not a parts bin special.
All the body braces and such, and everything is so simple, that suspension, beautiful. Some cars you start taking them apart and it looks like they crammed it in there any way they could, but everything looks so elegant on that thing. Love those suspension / sub frame setups. On other cars with subframes it's not nearly as clean of a setup.
Very awesome!! Wow, there are a lot of parts. Glad to see another video and some more progress. Counting the days until another video!
Corey Boudreaux Thank you Corey and oh yeah, tons of parts all over the flipping place! I'll be posting the next video on Feb 27th.
im going to follow your video cause you make everything so easy to understand and very fun to watch without getting bored
Thanks man, sounds good to me!
8:51 Wasn't expecting that at all, laughed pretty hard Tom.
Shocked how clean this car was for ~10 years old. Must have been a garage queen driven only on sunny days.
great looking series mate. Been looking for some more cool car builds.
Love the front sub-frame part - weeeeeeeee
Wow this is so cool. A v8 on a miata. Projects like these are what being a car enthusiast is all about. So much work, so much love, and hate sometimes (lol).. but when you finish... that car belongs to you and you alone... Thank you for sharing Tom and also inspiring new ideas for future projects ;)
Thank you Bryan, I'm glad you're enjoying the series! I'll be posting the next update on Feb 27th, hope you enjoy it!
Cant wait man....
DANG!! That is one nice and CLEAN Garage.
First time I've EVER heard of a charcoal canister referred to as a "mailbox thing" lol good video man
😀 Haha! These moments in the video usually happen when I’ve been in the garage too long. 🤪😀 Glad you enjoyed the videos!
8:52 - my favourite part.
You're doing everything I wish I could do Tom. Keep up the great work man!
Thank you sir, I appreciate that! I am having lots of fun and learning tons too!
good grief this was a gigantic undertaking!
i remember feeling proud of myself when i replaced a ruptured radiator hose!😄
The mailbox (LOL) was a charcoal cannister used to trap the fuel vapor, part of the evap system. Nice build my friend, nice build :)
Thank you Tom or Mitch Or whatever your name is for sharing your build with everyone. So many people are reluctant to share their tips and tricks. When I see a modded car I'm always weery of the engineering of the build of the car driving next to me. Nice to see a professional build a proper sports car. Thanks Summit. New Cars Suck. Old Cars with modern up-grades way + everything. :) If anyone has 30-100G to blow on a new car, find an older car you really love and dump the $ into er' an get something really true to it's value. Weather you do as much as you can yourself or get a pro to build it for you, you'll get a car that will go for another 20 to 40 years from now, can't get that from a new car.
As i expected, Another awesome video tom! I will be counting down the days until the next episode!
James'sWorld Thank you again sir!
Wow. Impressively done. Beautiful garage also!
YES ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!!!! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST SWAP VIDEO WALK-THROUGH SO FAR!
Marloon Thank you sir, I'm glad you enjoy it and find it helpful too! I'll be posting the next one on Feb 27th. See ya then!
Oh no! I have to subscribe! ;)
Usually when I find videos like these. It's been a few years since the build has been done and all parts have long been uploaded. Not this time! Nice video man!
Thank you and I appreciate the kind words! FYI- I'll be posting the next update on Feb. 27th.
Awesome! Can't wait, man!
I already binged on your Galant sleeper videos, last night. Amazing build.
Your humor is also an amazing touch to your videos. Not something you really see on these types of channels. I'm glad I came across your channel!
murkinstock Well thanks again and I appreciate you checking out my older videos too! My attempts at humor are a love/hate kinda thing for folks, I just throw them in there when I get loopy in the garage.
Brings a whole new meaning to Weight Reduction .
This guy is a real mechanic
Wow! You're not messing around this time awesome video.
Luis Tirado Thank you Luis! Got some good stuff in the next one for ya too, I'll be posting it on Feb 27th.
Wow thats alot of work n to keep clean withouth breaking anything dang great job tom cant wait for next video
G C Thank you sir, I appreciate that! Glad you enjoy the videos and look for a new one on Feb. 27th.
That's a vapor canister!! Not a mailbox haha
charcoal
J Henry Schmith for the BAR B QUE.
Not sure if this has been posted already, but that mailbox thing you took out around 2:00 is the charcoal canister for the fuel evap system. Excellent work, really thorough and detailed breakdown. Have a subscription.
Thank you and yes, I know. It was just a bad attempt at humor.
That's crazy business going on there Tom !!! Can't wait for the next video 👍
ike suderman Thank you Ike! I'll be posting it on Feb 28th. See ya!
Tell ya what, dude is not afraid of anything mechanical. Thinking an IQ of 200+ as well... Nice work Tom !
MetalTeamster Thanks man, I'm not sure if I'm fearless or clueless! :-D
Amazing Tom can't wait for the next episode!
Thank you Chris! I'll be posting part 4 this Friday 3/13. See ya then!
Gotta be the cleanest tidiest garage I have ever seen.....with a lift too, oh I so hate my trolley jacks.
thats a very clean miata for second hand
Thank you, yes it took quite a long time to find this car!
Great video keep em coming from a fan in the UK.
jibberjabba1969 Thank you sir and will do! Next episode will be posted on Feb. 27th. Please tell everyone in Great Britain that I said hello! :-D I hope to visit there again someday.
Amazing work Tom. Can't wait for the next video.
bobdoleluke1978 Thank you very much sir, I hope your Galant is doing well!
Hey Tom about that axle you banged, I also got into that situation when I was much younger on a 1st gen Ford Probe. I ended up at the ER and spent 22 days at the hospital because I held my breath to hit stronger and collapsed my lungs ! Thats insane.. We dont get to choose our body when we land on this earth..
***** Whoa!! Glad to hear you made it out ok Daniel!
Man, that's a lot of parts......Love it so far.....
Dennis Fawver Thank you Dennis, oh yeah you should see my attic where all of the parts are stored.
Awesome Videos Tom. I thought changing the timing belt was a challenge ! LOL
I was looking at doing the Acura V6 option. Now you got me thinking V8. Great job man!!
Dang Tom. You're a boss. Much kudos on what you dl
Well thanks Miguel, glad you enjoyed it!
I love your RCR "business guy" impression. RRRRRAAA. SO MANY WIIIRES.
Haha, thanks Jeff! it's actually an unintentional impression- its a voice I've done since college, but to my ears sounds more like a poor imitation of the awesome/demented RCR voice!
Tom's Turbo Garage Funny how car guys always know what "that guy" sounds like. ;)
***** Haha, indeed!
So - I see it's just a quick bolt-in motor conversion. Easy peasy.....Oh, and there's a spot on your floor over in the corner there. Grab a rag, will ya? (Thanks for sharing, I'm greatly enjoying watching your content).
Excellent video Tom.... When is part 3 coming out
Oh man you're awesome! I'd love to do something like this but I lack the tools, skills, space and budget to do so. Is the Miata a unibody car? What's the budget on this build?
Sitting here impatiently waiting for part 3
Haha, thanks Horace! I'll be posting part 3 this Friday Feb 27th.
