Love everything so far…with exception of need of lighthouse (which I don’t presently own). Recently got PCL and super happy for now. But great to see progress.
Waiting for all the new headsets, but this is at the top of my list so far. Unless something with a bigger FOV comes out. I'll take small hits for a bigger FOV.
Pretty exciting piece of tech. Really well designed with all the features and comfort that VR enthusiasts really appreciate. Too pricey for me but each iteration means the technology will trickle down to other devices. We need competition in this market.
Its lack of eye tracking capability is a big concern. For stereoscopic rendering with *Dual 4K screen* , *forveated rendering* is a *MUST Have* , otherwise this HMD can render even a 4090 down to its knees, barely go past 60FPS (except for very simplistic scenes, you could easily push the pipeline past thousands of FPS with onky a box and a plane 😁). Rendering on Varjo HMD has already proven to be a daunting task for 4090 w/o forveated rendering (2880 x 2720 per Eye). Not to say 3840 x 3840 or 4320 x 4320. Lighthouse tracking is good despite many dislike its one time setup and additional base station costs. It allows *less circuitry & battery on your head* , much less latency, and much less error-prone than the inside-out camera based tracking. Keep HMD lighter and simpler. Lastly, the price *US$1899 Only for 1 Headset* without controllers, base stations, etc is kinda too luxrious for the majority (>97%) of casual VR gamers. 😅 Can't it be cheaper with lower resolution and higher refresh rate (>90Hz)?
Very very true, but IMO if everything else pans out (good FOV, good pancake edge to edge clarity, bright enough mOLED, hopefully higher than 90 hz refresh rate support) I would say that even running this at a way lower resolution (even just 2k per eye for easy scaling) will be way worth it for many. You of course don't get the detail and sharpness, but just not seeing the pixel structure anymore would be a plus. > Lighthouse tracking is good despite many dislike its one time setup and additional base station costs. My biggest issue with Lighthouse tracking is the very prominent high pitch noise the base stations make. This is with having RMA'd both base stations to Valve (when I still had an Index) having had them mounted to the wall, standing on a carbet, the floor..., changing radio frequences and all that. It annoyed me (well into my 30s so my hearing can't be all that amazing even) enough to let me go Quest 3 instead of BigScreen Beyond. > much less latency, and much less error-prone than the inside-out camera based tracking. I am too lazy to search for it but camera based inside out tracking actually has a lower latency than Lighthouse tracking according to a paper that is public. I personally also found my Quest Pro controllers (self tracked inside out) on the Q3 to be as precise as my Index controllers (with both basically feeling the same).
No news on eye tracking, so probably not. For dual 4K screen stereoscopic rendering, forveated rendering is a *MUST Have* , otherwise this HMD can render an 4090 down to its knees, barely go past 65~70 FPS (except for very simplistic scenes, you could easily go past thousands FPS with a box and a plane 😁)
Hello, Sebastian :) I remember that video perfectly well , and the same person who flashes in this video presented a prototype to you and a companion . And in my opinion, this helmet is from Panasonic. This instance looks just fine, finally something really convenient and apparently
For a professional VR headset, where visuals are the top priority, this price seems reasonable. I’d love to see a 2-4K consumer version with a price point that competes with Bigscreen Beyond's headset in the future.
@@legendp2011 well! Quest 3 has excellent lcd display. Sometimes it really takes me by surprise how sharp, vivid and bright it looks. Even the blacks look pretty good for lcd.

Great video thank you. For me I would like a headset with these lenses / screens etc but I'm happy for a bigger form factor to scrap the lighthouse tracking It feels like there are a lot of headsets that have 90% of what we want but none tick all the boxes lol
Wow at least based on your initial impressions it seems to have The Beyond beat in every area except looks (this one is personal but I doubt many will are you The Beyond looks worse) and the custom fit interface (which some people see as a drawback because they can’t share it). Well I guess The Beyond could be lower on price too since I haven’t heard an official price for The Megane X. Such an exciting time for PCVR fans and thanks for the video!
Finally! I'm excited to buy this and hopefully replace my main vr headset. Woooooah. Good binocular overlap as well?!?! I'm sold. I imagine the panels themselves make this headset so damn expensive.
This looks awesome and I'm very happy for Shiftall, but that price is going to make it extremely slow to pick up if it will manage to at all. If they could get it down to even the price of the Bigscreen Beyond then they would have a much more competitive product.
Pancake lenses and an OLED screen? Isn’t that the perfect combination? Being able to push in and expand out the viewer makes it look easy to adjust. This may be another incredible VR option
This is a great headset *IF* it delivers what it promises, even at this $1900 price point. People do seem to overlook some stuff when it comes to this form factor, as this is a somewhat new 'type' of HMD the only truly comparable headset is the Bigscreen Beyond, now that that's out of the way here are some responses to people complaining or saying that this will never sell: "Too expensive" This is a top-end enthusiast grade headset, if this is "too expensive" for you its clearly not meant for you, Display and VR tech is currently not advanced enough to make $500 headsets with these specs. "No eye tracking?!" If people want it that badly this is theoretically possible to addon via a mod just like the BSB. "Why does it not have inside-out camera-based tracking?!" Again, 'enthusiast grade', base stations have typically better tracking quality, this also reduces size and weight of the headset. Another thing to consider is controllers and FBT. "No audio solution?!" Audio is subjective, and most enthusiasts will have better solutions. Admittedly though it would be nice to see a hard style strap with integrated audio just like the BSB has. "100 degree FOV sucks!!" Like I said this is a fairly new form factor, compare this things FOV to the BSB and they are pretty similar, It's just simply a limitation of the size. If you don't like it go back to other headsets that have more. Now some other things to consider, mostly just direct comparisons: 1. *IF* these lenses are better then the Bigscreen Beyond, such as glare, sweet spot, and edge to edge clarity, then it is a serious upgrade. 2. These displays are a MUCH higher resolution, and from what I've heard higher brightness then the BSB displays. 3. Due to a universal gasket and IPD adjustment you can share this headset, unlike the BSB, that also means no IPhone requirement or needing to send it back for replacements if the IPD is wrong. 4. If what's said in the video is true and the binocular overlap as well as vertical field of view are as good as he says then that's amazing. 5. A front to back top strap is possible to add, they specify on their website. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not shilling out for this company or their product, I'm just happy MeganeX and Bigscreen are pushing this form factor forward, its something the PCVR market really needs. Hopefully that sheds some light on it, and if this headset is as good as it seems, it is going to be amazing. We're just gonna have to wait for more reviews to make sure.
Love all the ideas and concepts, but stripping it clean means its directly competing with the Beyond... which is like, half the price if they are launching at that price. Only real benefit are the displays (that no modern graphics card could easily run) and the mounting method. Which is quite nice, don't get me wrong! I think the only real hitch is that they haven't really successfully shipped any of their previous designs yet.
The way the glasses swing up, it's just like a set of military NVG, what a great idea, it's kinda obvious when you look at it. Just wish the price was more reasonable, but given time? I can see this form factor becoming the standard.
This has been done before quite a few times. The problem is that this sort of hinge doesn't hold the headset tight to the face, and so you loose a few IPD points.
Finally a potential replacement for my G2. I want good PCVR visuals but cannot compromise on comfort. I have an 8kx and use it sometimes for fun, but really need a comfortable light and small headset, so I doubt the Pimax Crystal Light would be good enough. I really considered the Big Screen Beyond but saw so many bad reviews about ipd problems and terrible glare. This may be double the price, but if it is better visuals without the fails of the BSB then I sure would try it. Not too sure about SHIFTALL in the international market at this point as they don't seem to have an established consumer market track record.
Will this one work natively with Linux? Still holding out for a next generation one... Index 2. But this one was not on my radar and sounds really good!
@@Taikaru yeah... a regular displayport cable cannot handle that many pixels so it uses a form of compression called DSC.This essentially allows for a significantly larger throughput of the displayport cable at an almost loseless quality. i love this form factor. nice. 1) add battery in back strap with Wifi 7 (for very very high speed transmission), Bluetooth. and it is standalone, ultra light and comfortable google. 2) imagine can clip/connect night vision cam "(XRB-1351-S65) SIONYX offers standardized camera core components and camera modules with a variety of lens options to meet our clients’ requirements, 2nd Gen SIONYX low light technology delivers 0.5 mLux performance Packaged camera core with lens option is daytime safe with high reliability." @@AlexysRM I'm aware of that. Foveated rendering helps performance around 20%, so it does also in Pimax Crystal. Both have foveated rendering and eye tracking, and still this MeganeX has 8k pixels vs 5k in the Crystal.
Great. A few things come to mind. Current 3d full sbs movie is 3820x1080. The height is too short for this headset. Even a 4k 3820x2160 is still too short. Current game included graphical assets does not include such high resolution. Thats mean when play games or watch movie. They will just zoom it to full screen. Which will caused lack of sharpness. But, of course, it is a future device that has to wait for content.
I like how they mount it to the headstrap with what looks like someting from a night vision army helmet mount, that gives it a lot of adjustment and flip-up ability. Those things are expensive though
Great review, thanks! Personally I do not mind that it is lighthouse tracked, I have Reverb G2 en before that an Index. The headset tracking of the G2 is fine but that of the controllers is not, so therefore the lighthouse preference. Also I hope they’ll come up with an audio solution
It looks like a clever design for the Headstrap. I like the move in and out with the flip up feature. But, Pimax Crystal Light is going to be my PCVR headset for many moons 🌙. I don’t need another headset I just need more amazing games. But, this headset is definitely impressive. Thanks for sharing. You’re Awesome! My friend… 😉👌🙋🏻♂️🫶
You need more amazing games??? You never heard UEVR mod? We got way too many and i don't even know if i can keep up with 13,000 Unreal engine 4,5 games 😂
@ji3200 Yes, this UEVR injector is an amazing mod when it works properly. It is frustrating for me every time I try to get into a game. I always have a struggle finding the perfect settings. I still haven't been able to get Dead Island 2 working with it. I know it works because I have seen RUclips videos of people playing it with UEVR. I try to play Black Myth Wukong using the UEVR, and it isn't a great experience. I can only manage to get excellent visuals or excellent performance, not both. Note: I am using a Pimax Crystal Light with 4090 card. I really want an official virtual reality game that doesn't require all this tinkering. If the UEVR injector worked flawlessly for me. I would probably enjoy it more. I don't mind using playing with a controller. Luke Ross mods are cool but again lack the feel of an official game made for VR.
For VRChat people on Lighthouse gear with FBT and who have Diver-X, UDCAP, or Immersive Gloves coming in the future, this is a no brainer upgrade from the Index. From the Beyond, it might possibly be worth it. Would be nice to get a more details on the lenses and the comfort of the headstrap. Wonder why they aren't utilizing that slot on the forehead for a top strap yet?
This MeganeX definitely looks exciting and solves many problems. My concerns are #1 cost, and then how durable the lens coating will be, no built-in audio solution, and no info on a microphone. It will also be interesting to see how they solve refresh rate through the PC connection.
that accordion gasket is what they used back in the day for cameras im pretty sure. how does it feel though? the structure does seem flimsy, hopefully they allow third party straps.
PSVR2 has a similar gasket arrangement - I find it very comfortable. Of course it only works if the HMD is supported correctly by the halo strap so the gasket isn't bearing weight. Overall, I prefer it to squishing down foam padding.
Hmmm… from their website: “Please note that orders cannot be cancelled, returned or refunded once confirmed.” That’s a big red flag to me. I preordered the Reverb G2 & wasn’t charged til it shipped many months later.
I agree, the future of VR is moving in that direction: light headset, 4K microOled panels, pancake lenses, built-in diottical correction. But not with the base stations tracking. In my opinion.
Base station tracking will always make more sense for PCVR. If you are gonna be wired to a powerful desktop PC you might as well have mounted tracking lighthouses which free up space and weight from the headset.
@@mixedrealityTV in the video you flipped it up with both hands, one hand to release a catch in the middle and the other hand to lift. if it can be flipped up by one hand just by pressing a button on the side wouldn't that of been worth showing? or it it just a prototype and the button feature comes later?

Hi One Question about the meganex for the ones who have the pomax crystal. Do you feel juddering ? The pimax on higwarts legacy for example makes the image blurry when you turn the caméra with the controller. Not when you turn your actual head with the headset, but when you turn with the controller. Is it the case with meganex also , or the image stays perfectly sharp when you move around your character with the controller ???
Love the form factor! Impressive resolution but no GPU will be able to make use of its capabilities for quite a while: I mean, render 2x4k at 72hz or more... no way. Not to mention the price. But it pushes the tech in the right direction, so kudos there!
One gpu no, but 2 would be fine. A gpu for an eye. I mean this is the future, you can’t make gpus just bigger and bigger, there will be a moment when they’ll be sold in pairs.
needs a headstrap with audio like the beyond go for sure. though it looks like the ports are all on the underside front. which is a terrible place to have an audio cable hanging down if thats where it is.. when you want to tilt the headset up youre going to have a wire in your face...
This headset looks perfect from what I can see. Might even be a worthy upgrade to the Crystal. Any idea on brightness? I think the dude in the video mentioned something about still tweaking that? Any idea of any audio solutions they'll have with this, or will we need to bring our own? Still not a fan of that name, though, lol, but the product, on paper at least, looks like what we've been asking for.

So no way to run that with good FPS even with RTX 5090, or maybe x)
👍Innovation going in the right direction. However, the lack of inside out tracking, audio and perhaps eye tracking (at this price point) is a no go for me. Will wait for crystal super (albeit not my favorite size and form) as my G2 replacement for MSFS/DCS.

Shiftall has a very spotty track record actually releasing any of its products, especially outside Japan, so I'll believe it only when they start shipping. Yes, it's not so much their fault when the supply chain just wasn't working out despite promises, but nonetheless. Otherwise, yeah, perfect little device. If I don't get a Beyond before this ships, I'll consider dropping two grands on it.
And a beefy gfx card to drive this HMD 😅
If you think they have a spotty track record you should look up something called the DecaGear.
8K you say. That's a lotta pixels to push. This look like a very spicy meatball. I like it.

This is awesome, thank you!
@@Games-tt9huhow are you liking the q3?

This thing is so depressing. We are almost in 2025, and this people want to ship a headset without eye-tracking. It is simple outrageous.

Excellent. I'm interesting in buying one of these if it works well in DCS.
For a professional VR headset, where visuals are the top priority, this price seems reasonable. I’d love to see a 2-4K consumer version with a price point that competes with Bigscreen Beyond's headset in the future.

I swear by the time this arrives in Europe and I have gotten one, Valve will announce the Index 2 a month later, with even better tech and cheaper

This is what im waiting for, a native PCVR.
Pancake lenses and an OLED screen? Isn’t that the perfect combination? Being able to push in and expand out the viewer makes it look easy to adjust. This may be another incredible VR option
Actually microOLED screens which is even better.
@@sturmx96 microled screens are even better and in the next future, cheaper to produce...
This is a great headset *IF* it delivers what it promises, even at this $1900 price point.
People do seem to overlook some stuff when it comes to this form factor, as this is a somewhat new 'type' of HMD the only truly comparable headset is the Bigscreen Beyond, now that that's out of the way here are some responses to people complaining or saying that this will never sell:
"Too expensive" This is a top-end enthusiast grade headset, if this is "too expensive" for you its clearly not meant for you, Display and VR tech is currently not advanced enough to make $500 headsets with these specs.
Now some other things to consider, mostly just direct comparisons:
Looks like those lenses are also coated with grease 1:17 🙃
Really curious about the edge to edge clarity. It’s so bad in the beyond I don’t even use that headset anymore
Will this one work natively with Linux? Still holding out for a next generation one... Index 2. But this one was not on my radar and sounds really good!
probably not without alot of tinkering, too push out all those pixels it relies heavily on Nvidia software, cant even use it with an AMD card.
@@yukihiroshishido8093 Oh really??? I have an AMD card :O

The way the headset is mounted reminds me of Military night vision devices.

Exciting!!!!
It does have dual microphones.
that accordion gasket is what they used back in the day for cameras im pretty sure. how does it feel though?
the structure does seem flimsy, hopefully they allow third party straps.
PSVR2 has a similar gasket arrangement - I find it very comfortable. Of course it only works if the HMD is supported correctly by the halo strap so the gasket isn't bearing weight. Overall, I prefer it to squishing down foam padding.
I pre ordered the g2 and told myself no more pre orders. Id consider this down the line though especially if it supports wireless

I agree, the future of VR is moving in that direction: light headset, 4K microOled panels, pancake lenses, built-in diottical correction.

One Question about the meganex for the ones who have the pomax crystal.
