My grandfather was in the 4th on Iwo Jima. Lt. William C. Mikelait of Mount Clemens Michigan. He used to tell me that black sand "danced" in front of his face from the machine gun fire. According to the documents we have, my grandmother saved them all, he landed at "Blue Beach"
Lt. Mikelait arrived at Iwo a 2nd Lt....he left a 1st Lt. with a Purple Heart. Which my family covets. The average life from what I understand of a officer on Iwo was 9 minutes.
Thank you grandpa...I see where I get my athleticism and cunning ability from. You got it on that beach...and gave it to me...

Thanks for the beautiful dedication to my uncle Claud. He was so proud to be a Marine...just 19... and even prouder to serve this country. He was in the first wave of landings on Iwo Jima, on February 19. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet him. May he, and all WWII Veterans, never be forgotten.

Kevin, it was an honor to share you Uncle's service with George's story. I would loved to have known him. A hero to all of us. If you find a photo during that time please let me know. He and George I am sure are sharing stories in Heaven with all the other warriors up there. God bless you!!

I had the good fortune to see Roi Namur in 1971. Mr. Cordrey remarked that the battle there was not nearly as intense as at Iwo Jima. Considering that the water near the shoreline of Roi Namur was absolutely littered with spent bullets of all calibers, mortar fins, and rusted remains of various landing craft ... well, Iwo Jima must have been horrific compared to that.
