Our FIRST International title! | Atlanta United 3-2 Club América | Campeones Cup | 2019

Atlanta United defeated Club America 3-2 on Wednesday night, August 14, 2019, to claim the 2019 Campeones Cup. In front of 40,128 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta erased a second-half deficit with goals from Jeff Larentowicz and Josef Martinez. Emerson Hyndman scored the opening goal and Alec Kann shined in net, making four saves. Atlanta became the first MLS team to win Campeones Cup and just the second MLS team to beat a Liga MX team to win a trophy.
Hyndman opened the scoring in the fifth minute, finishing off a long buildup from Atlanta. Dion Pereira played the pivotal pass, tipping a ball forward into the box for Hyndman who drilled his left-footed shot into the far corner. Franco Escobar, Julian Gressel, Darlington Nagbe and Josef Martinez each had a pass in the sequence that started in Atlanta’s half.
Club America answered eight minutes later as Renato Ibarra buried an equalizer. Andrés Ibargüen played a ball in between two Atlanta defenders for Roger Martinez, who turned and dribbled to the end line before sending a ball across the mouth of the goal that Ibarra got on the end of. He slammed a right-footed shot off the crossbar that ricocheted in for the goal.
Video review awarded a penalty kick to Atlanta in the 41st minute, as it ruled Bruno Valdez fouled Pity Martinez inside of the box. Josef Martinez stepped up to take the penalty, but his attempt was saved by Oscar Jiménez.
America opened the second half scoring with a goal from Roger Martinez off a corner kick. Francisco Cordova sent the ball into the middle of the box and Martinez finished from close range.
But Atlanta answered immediately from Jeff Larentowicz, who sent a missile into the back of the net from 25 yards out a mere two minutes after America had taken the lead. America had appeared to the avoid the danger with a headed clearance out of the box. But it landed near Larentowicz, who took a touch before unleashing a rocket into the upper left corner.
Josef Martinez then gave Atlanta the lead six minutes later from the penalty spot. Florentin Pogba drew it as he was cleared out inside the 18-yard box by Guido Rodriguez in the 64th minute. Martinez stepped up this time and drilled his shot into the upper left corner.

Nagbe to me has been the best player on the field today. If you watched the game start to finish you’ll see why. He did everything tonight. And he to me is probably the best at maintaining possession in the midfield on the team.

Cody Hirsch that rule is dumb. How do you score a free kick on that? You’d have to literally blast it full speed over the wall. America basically had 5 GKs guarding the goal. If not for that rule, Pity get a gorgeous FK goal.
I don't understand the rule. Is there a limit to how many players you can have in the box on that? Could you just have all 11 in there?
That free kick was absolutely upper 90 in in the back of the net had there not been 5 defenders in the 6 yard box

Jamie Hobbs its called an indirect free kick. They come when a gk picks up a pass from his own player. The kick is taken wherever they picked it up or where the pass was kicked I’m not sure
“First ever winners of the campeones cup” that says a lot when you realize we were only a 2 year old club. This is the Atlanta I miss. This club is the best expansion club in MLS history
No other team has been as good as 2018 Atlanta United. Inter Miami don't count. They have been given special concessions no other team has so there is an asterisk over whatever they win.

2. That dramatic pause between Larentowicz's shot and goal must've felt like an eternity.
3. Josef Martínez is Iceman.
This is among my favorite Atlanta United matches that I have attended. People who go to regular matches, but sat out this one missed out. It was fun having so many Club América fans there. No matter what happened, it got loud in the Benz. Everyone was respectful and had a great time. Only negative was some of the calls from the ref, but it worked out in the end. The calls didn't seem one-sided.
Josef did not fuck around in that second penalty. Good job representing MLS Atlanta!

Well I never doubted MLS despite Liga MX having an advantage over It. I believe both leagues have their good and bad. However I believe both leagues should participate in Copa Libertadores. That tournament is good way for both leagues to show what they are made of.
They eventually have to do Neutral stadium, or a home and away leg. Atlanta crowds, and playing on TURF, are too big an advantage.

I watched a couple of spanish language analysis of the game, including comments from coach from America. He gave props to ATL UTD, but also said he thought they were the better team and if it wasn't for their mistakes and poor play, they would have won.
I beg to differ. I love Liga MX (I even LIVED in Queretaro, Mexico, for 2 1/2 yrs) and I love MLS (especially my Atlanta United), but Atlanta cleeeearly had the upper hand the majority of the game and had more opportunities than America, IMHO.
Yup, ATL had 58% possession, 17 shots (vs 15 America shots), 10 shots on target (vs 6 America shots on target), 78% passes completed (vs 71% passes completed). Objectively, ATL was better almost everywhere. And as someone who actually watched the game, I'd say in this case the stats match the eye-test.

As a Liga MX fan I am actually proud of Atlanta. They seem like they could be the face of MLS and I would respect them. It would be cool if we finally had a strong American team that could consistently challenge the Mexican teams.

@Darnell Williams Thats exactly what they need, but MLS' salary structure forces even the biggest spending MLS sides to prioritize attack over defence. Occasionally a team like Toronto can put together a team with adequate defenders and enough of an attack to overcome defensive shortcomings to compete with Liga MX but they have to work much harder and have special players like Giovinco who can pull off spectacular goals against the run of play. MLS is getting there, slowly but surely. Definitely the 2nd best league overall in the region...
As an atlanta united fan we need to get out of the mls and try to play in liga mx, atlanta is the best team that mls have a lot better than LAFC if you take out vela LAFC is done dude, mls is easy for atlanta thats the truth we need to go to liga mx and play in libertadores.

That's a telling win for the 5 Stripes. Club America is one of the best teams in Mexico's Liga MX; their teams have won I believe all the CONCACAF Champions Cups, and all the Campeones Cups including Tigres beating Toronto in the last installment. 1) mls has 4 of the worst teams play in that tournament except salt lake who barely lost to even statistics

Just take ATL for example... After only playing a few preseason games under a new manager with a new style (and just loosing their star player) they still managed Quater final in champions... You can't honestly tell me after watching this game that if ATL had played in champions with this mid season-form they wouldn't have gotten farther? Would they have won? Maybe or maybe not it would have been close imo but they definitely would have gotten further as well as some other mls teams

La liga mx está aún por encima de la mls , obviamente un campeonato no define que liga es mejor, y tampoco es que la liga mx sea muy superior, apenas es un poco mejor, pero no me extrañaría que la mls dentro de algunas decadas sea la mejor liga del mundo, lo cuál a México le convendría.
Pero si es mejor monterrey y tigres le gana a cualquiera aya!
