+Byron Norrod If you want to hear her play the entire pieces, go to her concerts! This bit is called "PR", not performance. And take it from me, I've heard her several times and she is one of the finest violinists you'll ever hear.
I cannot believe the negative comments on here. This is Rachel Barton Pine. She is an amazingly accomplished violinist. She came off as friendly, and knowledgable. She lost one foot, and had the other severely, and permanently mangled many years ago in a freak Metra train accident. The conductor didn't see her exiting, and closed the doors too early. Her violin bag was caught in the door, and she was dragged by the train. She has persevered though this to become a top tier soloist. Metra changed their way of signaling the doors to be closed because of her horrible accident.
+Judy JR (Life with my dogs) So people shouldn't criticise her performance just out of sheer sympathy: Just because she suffered through something that traumatic means we should be forgiving of her attitude? How demeaning and patronising is that! Seriously, that's a pretty sad attitude. I'd have to hear her other work before I can have an opinion on her, but her performances in the passages she played here were *quite* questionable, and I'm sure she can cope with criticism. She's a grown adult, you know.
+Fernie Canto - You missed the point of my post. I have heard her play on many recordings, and live. She is extremely talented. People should not judge her from this one video. I still can't see how people think she is being smug.
the hate should be on whoever titled this video, not this violinist. She isn't obnoxiously pretending to be the fastest violinist or the "best" violinist or anything.
I enjoyed the demonstration this gal presented but was disappointed that I didn't get to hear the pieces she was talking about. There's no doubt that she's talented, just would have liked to hear her play Paganini
vibratingstring Don't know what you mean by loser part! I've played for almost all of my life., and have always enjoyed it. I also enjoy hearing others play. And that was the reason I felt disappointed. I for one have been a diversified player, from classic, to country, to bluegrass, a bit of jazz, and love to play the blues. Violin works wonders with the "Blues". Even backup on Rock music. Tho it's not my fav.
I really like this. There is nothing wrong with her attitude, it's refreshing, and she is playing all of this cold, in an interview situation. I enjoyed this.
The people who complain about the video's misleading title seem to ignore that this is a splendid tutorial--and a good-humored one, at that--from one of the world's finest young violinists. Thank you, Rachel Barton Pine.
+DANIEL ALVARADO They have "they are lives together"? Sorry, I get obsessive about those things for some reason, it's "their lives together".. :) Not really important. But as other people said musicians, I think, tend to be among the least "together" people you can find. In my experience, at least.
Cant believe some of the comments. This violinist can play all the Paganini Caprices and very well. There is no need for any negative comments. She is a diamond. Thank you Rachel
The comments are ridiculous. Why are people saying she's arrogant? She's fucking amazing, and she knows it. Nothing wrong with that. Amazing people shouldn't have to apologise for being amazing.
I absolutely LOVE hearing artists divulge upon the challenges and feats throughout their musical career. It gives so much more depth to not only the musician but to their composition as well. I find it a privilege to hear someone as talented as her speak, not only is she articulate but it gives much needed insight to the ins and outs of playing at such a high level.
How can anyone give a thumbs down? Almost sacrilegious. This woman is one of the best violinists alive and has such a nice demeanor! Shame on you 79 people!
+Badaxxe ...and it may be risky, but I don't think it's nearly as risky; you can hide mistakes with Paganini - he was, after all, a violinist. I think that the Tchaikovsky violin concerto is much more difficult; the passages are not very violinist friendly. Or the Beethoven. Super transparent. Paganini is tough but written by someone who's fingers knew what the instrument is capable of, unlike Tchaikovsky, who just had an understanding of it, not perfect knowledge. Beethoven just made his concerto really transparent. A a loooot of violinists have done this kind of thing before, so claiming it's "rarely performed in succession?" Waaay too much clickbait. And lastly, that kind of clickbaitiness is really demeaning to an amazing violinist like Rachel Barton Pine. They treat her like a fiddle player. She's a concert violinist, for goodness' sake.
I don't know how many commenters here know Rachel's story. She was in a near-fatal accident involving a commuter train in 1995 where she lost one leg and the other was severely mangled. That antique Amati violin got caught in the door as she was exiting, pinning her shoulder to the train and dragging her over 300 ft. before she fell beneath the wheels. To have carried on after such an ordeal shows a lot of strength and character, and I think some of the things said here show a lot of crudeness and ignorance.
My, my: a little cranky this morning, are we? Where did you read that I "claimed to be [a] musician? I was/am an amateur violinist, and did study for four years at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston (you may have heard of it…), and before that, studied in Philadelphia with the late Edgar Ortenberg, violinist with the Budapest String Quartet (maybe you've also heard of that group?), and at the time, head of the string department at the Settlement School in Philadelphia… Mr. Ortenberg always had his Guarneri instrument-a pretty good violin, Paganini played one-ready at hand in its open case on the dining room table, and on a very few occasions did, in fact, pick it up to illustrate a passage for me. I can also point you to several videos here showing Jascha Heifetz using his Stradivarius to teach his Master Class at UCLA (long after he had ceased giving concerts). As for what I post on RUclips: I put up music I like to listen to and think others might also want to hear; I wasn't aware that one isn't allowed to post anything but one's own performances. So you're so smart musically? Identify the background music I used-composer and source-as the "Bounty" (R.I.P.) docks in Gloucester harbor, and tell me why it's appropriate.

Rachel has had a difficult life journey, but is most amazing and beautiful. I remember when I was living in Chicago some years ago and Rachel, who is from there, was on her way to a lesson as a student if I remember correctly and fell under the train and lost her leg. I was so upset for her at the time, but obviously she is very strong and has made great strides in life and in art. Bravo Rachel!!
Rachel, Thank you for your integrity, grit, and perseverance. I love what you bring us with passion on the violin, and the research you put into it. Thanks for your grace!
Ah the lovely phrasing of her playing perfectly encapsulates the beauty of her violin! I think that this interpretation is by far my favorite, given that the technique shown is beyond supreme and musicality divine. I especially loved the ferocity of the last variation.

After watching Hilary play I should have gone forward with the violin, although I did put a transducer on the bridge to make it electric over the sound system. Hilary is phenomenal!!!!
+Bobby Wilson I used an electric bridge piece also, when I spent a couple years doing Country Western, and a lot of outdoor stuff. I still kept my reg bridge, but times change, and so do the necessities of doing the same job.
Gahdamn these comments are bunch of stupid. But anyways...got to see her years ago with the Nashville Symphony. She was so gracious. Her musicality was untouchable and her encore...we hid our eyes so as not to be blinded by her greatness. Go see her if you get that chance.
wow stick to reviewing vocal music. this is one of the prime examples of an absolutely terrible 'violinist'. (at her best) Just to set the record straight, any violinist (and by that I mean someone who actually performs classical music for a living - i.e. symphony/soloist/chamber - ) will vomit in an extraordinary manner if exposed to this type of repulsive playing for any length of time. And i don't just mean this video: I mean anything she attempts to play. so i say again; any violinist - or musician for that matter - who knows anything about what he/she is doing will be hiding their eyes and plugging their ears for a very different reason than what you seem to naïvely be suggesting.
I learned a valuable thing from this video. Before now, I'd never associated a Wall Street Journal-titled article with the term "click-bait". And yet, here we have a title clearly promising a violinist playing one of the riskiest pieces written(if that is, in fact, how violinists refer to the twenty-four Caprices; I'm not a violinist, so I couldn't say), and we have six minutes of interview punctuated here and there by a few bars of music. Listen up, WSJ. If you want to interview a violinist about her talents and undertakings, you should do that. And there will be a substantial group of people interested in watching that. But don't slap a misleading title on a view to garner clicks. You're supposed to be reputable journalists; act like it. Leave the click-bait titles to the Huffington Post and BuzzFeed.
I just love how the reporter doesn't feel at all confident about what he's saying. They should have had Rachel Barton Pine interviewed by a real musician.
That's why I always prefer to watch film of Jascha Heifetz's performances: no swooping or swaying, no facial expressions of agony or ecstasy-just a deadpan straight face as he gives a jaw-dropping performance.
The risk is saying that you can perform these advanced pieces in front of an audience. If you mess up your credibility has a chance to be questioned. Credibility is what gets jobs. I'm assuming that her financial income is based on her violin skills so the risk may be greater to her. This is what separates professionals from hobbyist.
being a musician I know that when you do mess up it needs to be so horrible that even experienced musicians can tell most mess ups are never even acknowledged
RBP is the most beautiful violin player I know. She is a virtual genius at her craft too.If De Vinci had seen her he would have tossed Mona in the garbage.
Dupy, Dziary, Muscle Cary. You do know that musician is a job and that some people do that for a living. There is no such things as free service. I do agree that the guy or girl who titled the video needs to be fired. Misleading as fuck.
Mengwen Zhu I think that's the whole point of those complaining. If the title is lame, but it is accurate, then the product (video) must also be lame. If the title sounds lame and therefore it is changed to sound more exciting, at a cost of no longer being accurate, then the title is indeed click bait. If they wanted an exciting title, they should have produced an exciting video. I thought it was okay, but I wouldn't have clicked on it if the title would have been an accurate description of the video. The title was chosen in the best interest of business (or most likely to generate income). It is a violation of RUclips guidelines, but if it generates income, well ... RUclips is a business too, and when money talks, everything else is semantic satiation.
Mark O'Conner's self-serving attack on Suzuki is off-putting, and makes him seem like a jerk. His claims have been proven to be false, and, but even if they were true, they are irrelevant to the effectiveness of the Suzuki method.
+Elvis Fix looked to me like she played them just fine. anyone that can pick up a violin and play what they want, is playing the violin…you concerns are moot, since you have no proper reference of what "playing" these pieces are. take me back and let me watch Paganini with you in your fucking time machines then. so we can all be enlightened as to what "playing" these pieces is? i could blind test you with an original recording of paganini himself, and you'd still bitch because some indecent tool taught you to stick your nose up. someone that had to play like a superior rule to the free world of music. i hate people like you. now if you said you didn't like her playing. that is your opinion. but she is clearly playing these pieces of music. she learned. she gets to choose how to express them.
Bo, you are clearly not a musician. Luckily I am. She hits a lot of the notes flat and I counted numerous mistakes with her finger positioning and bow control. Whether it was nerves or not. So before you go on a tirade against someone for having an opinion, maybe think to yourself that it may be an educated one. The fact that you think she played them just fine, tells me that you are either tone deaf, or just dont know enough to be able to tell. Her playing may not have been atrocious, she obviously does posses skill. But she clearly needed more practice before doing a video about that particular music.
Zom_Ba_Bomb sorry, who wrote the book on specific bow position that says sound isn't coming out of her violin, cause i heard the notes. they weren't flat. ever tuned a violin? mr. perfect pitch? you must also find yehudi menuhin not a musician. his elbow was just so high for his mendelsohn recording. go tell him he's wrong too. lol. tool like i said asshole. go master the piece, and choose how you express it. every note you play shuffles from flat to sharp. lol besides. perfect tone or pitch is just a measurement of a specific wave, and how that resonates in one's ear is different between every human on earth. there is no perfect pitch just a designed measurement you think you have. nothin more than a superiority complex lacking in real talent or understanding. she's a badass. you aren't.
J. S. Bach's 6 solo partitas & sonatas are way more impressive than Paganini's masturbatory pieces, (and they make far more musical sense). Check out Hilary Hahn's version of the JSB pieces!

+Strav9 No it wasnt about her playing it was a small interview promoting this concerts, now STFU and go see her play if you have the chance
I've been a violinist for 12 years and I thought she was pretty arrogant. But you almost have to be to get as good as she is.
Graham Black neither should white people.
Because people don't realize that it takes many years of daily practice to get to that level. They think this is a hobby smh.

how can these music artists and painters be so good at describing feelings and senses.

I love her! She was so cute when her string broke playing molly on the shore.
I love her enthusiasm and attitude very cute and super attitude
Thanks Rachel for explaining this!! I appreciate your additions of fingering to the various method books now out on the market!!
Her enthusiasm reminds me of jonny Depp in Charlie and the chocolate factory. pure love and enjoyment! she is amazing.
she is delightfully joyful and passionate and he can't segway to save his life!
I find violinists expressions while playing hilarious XD

Yeah, that's one thing I get self-conscious about when playing lol. I always get "orchestra face" and it's terrible.
Then you will really love metal Guitarist faces 😂😂😂

Fascinating! A person (who happens to identify as female) demonstrating her chops & commenting with *intelligence* & humor. Love it!
Rachel you are trually awesome!!! She puts it so well, the way a piece sometimes only makes sense after mastery - it's mystery before that. Loved it!
Oh well, back to my attempting third position without palpitations......
Wow, much respect to both of these folks.
I wanted to actually hear her play, not just talk to some guy about it.
I'm sure you can find lots of videos of her playing.
The title is misleading, sure, but she still shows off some insane playing ability just in her short segments of playing here.
I started playing violin five years ago it took me over six months to learn all these pieces. Drove me nuts.
liar…
conradgnad
Ya your right
***** Y''o'ure*
On top of amazing playing this is also a great interview. Well done to both of you!
stupid title. she didn't play ONE of....
I love Rachel Barton Pine!!! Brilliant...
You know, I can play all of the caprices. I will not play them, but I can talk all you want about how difficult it is.
What a fun video :) she was very lively and insightful!
Paganini played violin (fiddle) along with mandolin and guitar. All acoustically.
He was the original Bluegrass God... :-)
Fiddle, mandolin and guitar? Bluegrass god? For a minute I thought you was talking about Mark O'Connor... :-)
A reincarnation, except Mark isn't the radical Bohemian that Paganinni was... :-)
Mark O'Conner's self-serving attack on Suzuki is off-putting, and makes him seem like a jerk. His claims have been proven to be false, and, but even if they were true, they are irrelevant to the effectiveness of the Suzuki method.
ive seen this woman live, and she really is incredible
yeah she dont have to play it all. ahe knows what is she talking. wonderful demostration
dont hit dislike, she dont deserve the hate, is the channel making clickbait.
if you want to hear paganini being played properly go look at alexander markov.
Violin is so cool though. One of the most beautiful instruments out there imo
dying inside from jealosy here, i wish i could make those wonderful damn screeching noises
You can get a ballon, blow it up, then pinch the valve and pull it apart tightly while the air escapes, "eeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
PIlotrcm The Definition of Music
I love her attitude its great solid attitude
These are insanely difficult pieces, and hardly anyone can play them so I value her ambition but... SHE CAN'T PLAY THEM AT ALL
+Elvis Fix RIGHT!! I thought i was going insane. why is she playing stuff she cant play and bragging about it...
+Zom_Ba_Bomb The hubris is strong with this one, SMH
Zom_Ba_Bomb sorry, who wrote the book on specific bow position that says sound isn't coming out of her violin, cause i heard the notes. they weren't flat. ever tuned a violin? mr. perfect pitch? you must also find yehudi menuhin not a musician. his elbow was just so high for his mendelsohn recording. go tell him he's wrong too. lol. tool like i said asshole. go master the piece, and choose how you express it. every note you play shuffles from flat to sharp. lol besides. perfect tone or pitch is just a measurement of a specific wave, and how that resonates in one's ear is different between every human on earth. there is no perfect pitch just a designed measurement you think you have. nothin more than a superiority complex lacking in real talent or understanding. she's a badass. you aren't.
I liked the interview! Bless you Rachel. 😊 I hope you’re okay
That intonation was questionable
+Michael Madigan you must be
Do you even intonation bruh? her intonation was fine
Maybe it was so difficult because it changes key every note.
Jakemoof Your profile photo is questionable
Andy Saenz lol
Great interview with a unbelievable violinist!
click bait
I use dick bait
Sherizidie
on youtube? surely not!
Thanks Rachel Pine. What music!
J. S. Bach's 6 solo partitas & sonatas are way more impressive than Paganini's masturbatory pieces, (and they make far more musical sense). Check out Hilary Hahn's version of the JSB pieces!
Really interesting interview....thanks!
The microphone is really bad tho, I'm sure the sound is way better than what we actually hear
Her voice was so soothing
She survived!
She's sooooo cheerful and upbeat. If she's like that in real life, rather than it being a performance, I'll take two of whatever she's having.
I accidentally replaced my bow with a sword again.
lol, perfect
V3n0m7777 ok
Genius of the violin...one our great's!..Rachel rocks!!!!
metal indeed
She's just so excited, I love it
she kinda freaks me out a little
+Jeepjones85 I know what you mean. She is a gifted violinist and has worked hard but I cant start to like her. Something creepy about her.
+Philip Jones ahaha yeah she looks like she's going to murder you suddently with bow
Reminds me of a substitute we had. Overall nice guy, but gave me a vibe of a serial killer.
Diva Darling, that was marvelous ! Love the Del Gesu in your hands: it allows you to give voice with no restrictions.
I'm no violin expert, but it looks like her extra chins definitely help make holding that violin much more comfortable.
Dick
+atsay714 OMG ahahhahahahahah
She has violin-face. It’s very common when playing.
Do better...
Goosebumps at 3:00. So beautiful
this must have been the most awkward interview I've ever seen.
Very interesting interview. I really enjoyed it. Thank you....linda
This has to be scripted
Ikr
Imagine that. A scripted interview.
Of course it is. What’s your point?
She plays beautifully. Good job girl.
this is old... why was this in my suggested videos?
Ikr
same
Because you are old too
Yeah, there's a misleading title, but this is actually a great interview.
Violin-chin.
Love her bowing on Caprice #5. Most violinists do not play it with the ricochet bowing (as it was written and intended to be played).
