What an awesome way to dive and hunt Lionfish. My buddy hit me up and asked if I wanted to go hunt Lionfish just outside of Pensacola Florida, of course I said YES. This is not normal diving, this is drop and pop diving. It was pretty intense and really tested my scuba diving ability to be deep, manage my gas and NDL AND spear Lionfish. There was a lot to ensure the dive was done safely. We managed to clean out a solid 200 Lionfish combined. You dont want to miss this one!

Keep up the good work! No season, no license, no limit
The best way!
AND they’re TASTY!
Thank you for helping with the Lionfish. Apparently one female can lay 1 million in a year.
Oh yeah! They are prolific breeders.
One female can lay 1 million (males--gee, she'd be one very busy gal!!!) in a year? I'm sure you mean, a female can lay 1 million EGGS in a year, right?
Oh wow. I knew they were a problem but, that's a heartbreaking number!
@@ActiveDutyOutdoorsTheir larvae moves with the current too. They're taking over our reefs! Thank you for catching them and God bless you for that! It's like pythons. It's a never-ending battle without people like you guys.
They ought to call them the Slutfish then.
lol the other fish barely moved too, most were like “you taking them away, great! They were horrible neighbours” 😂😂😂😅😂
😂 right!!
its like invasive snakes in the Everglades, don't think you'll ever win but you're still doing a great job guys, keep it up
We usually hang a spare tank, with a few regulators, at the decompression depth below the boat. That way if anyone runs out there is a spare tank there. Then you have an area to group up as well for decom
That’s not a bad idea!
And a bottle of oxygen on the boat.
I love these videos. So calming. Hypnotic. No LF where I am.
Great score. Keep up the fantastic effort. Very proud of you folks with the work your doing, getting rid of these Lionfish. Heard they taste good also.
Thank you!! Yes, they are amazing to eat, probably my favorite.
That first lion fish was a beast! Nice!!
He was! And he was just sitting on the sand waiting to be speared, lol. I was surprised by how many there were after the ECO!
Hey man! I also saw them in the waters around Karpathos (Greece). If you want to combine lionfish hunting with a nice vacation on a beautiful island!
I heard they are starting to populate in the water off of Greece. I would love to make it out there one day!
Is there something that naturally hunts/eats Lionfish? Are sharks affected by its poison if it eats them?
@@JamesMichael333 in their natural water a lot of other fish eat them, eels, grouper, sharks, ect. Here where they are invasive the natural predators haven’t acquired a taste for them yet.
you guys need to start a Lion Fish Festival.Get as many divers to go out on a weekend .have food samples so people can try the lion Fish. hey they have Onion festivals & Garlic festivals & Rattlesnake festivals...Think big.Its a great cause. Thanks for all you do.
Respect to the clean up.. and the fact that you take the fish you catch and help the less fortunate is amazing.. keep up the good work 👍 I can't wait to try it out for my first time.. I'm looking forward to taking a vacation in 25🎉 to do so... !! Respect
Love seeing the diving videos...truly remarkable what you can see all around you.
That’s a fact! The underwater would is insane.
Doing the coral reefs in Florida a big service removing these invasive fish.
I hope to keep going out as often as possible to get rid of them.
Nailed a bunch in the Bahamas. They're freaking delicious! Heading to the Keys tomorrow actually. Kill some Lionfish and eat those bastards.
That’s awesome! I need to make it down to the keys someday! My old dive shop goes down all the time, I need to jump on one of the trips.
Lionfish are awesome to eat! Probably my favorite right now.
I'm from Pensacola, went Navy back in 89. Last dive out there maybe 88. Looking at moving back to FL ATM. Wouldn't mind going with groups to clear these as an activity.
Got 160 so far this year in Belize and now in Dominica. My wife and I had some filets for dinner last night. Nurse sharks will spot them and take them off a spear in Belize. I am told grouper will spot them in Dominica, but I have not seen that yet.
That’s awesome! I am supposed to head out again in a couple days. I might try and see if some of the local sharks will eat them.
The Grouper makes that grunting sound, it's a territorial thing, saying get lost, this is my turf...
That is a lot of fish. Hope the dive today was fun.
Ton of them. The dive today was awesome! Lots of sharks and super cool seeing an aircraft carrier under the water.
great video. i might have to give this a try, it looks like a fun day
It’s a blast hunting these things down!
nice spearwork. maybe for the next video you can show them getting filleted and cooked toward the end. I know alot of locals will avoid these kind of fish for the extra trouble they are to prepare but maybe with some extra knowledge out there we can get more of them getting normalized into local cuisine.
That’s a good idea. I’ll be out hunting them again on the 1st.
You are the Bob Ross of lionfish
I HAVE BEEN DIVING 37+ YEARS, 34 YEARS AS A INSTRUCTOR, YOU SAY YOU DID, 8:45 8 DIVES IN THE SAME DAY, 9:22 TO A DEPTH OF 103 FEET(31 METRES), WITH YOUR 10:05 SUNTO COMPUTER ALARM SET AT 1100 PSI (75 BAR) WITH 45 MINUTES SIT... PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT DIVE TABLES WHERE YOU USING, TO DO 8 DIVES, TO 31 METRES, IN THE SAME DAY, WITH 45 MINUTES SIT TIME, BETWEEN 8 DIVES, SAFELY ???
I was thinking the same myself … but then what do I know been diving since I was a young man and just reach the grand old age of 71 today and iv never done that many dives in a day 🇬🇧🏴
@albertbell7120 100% AGREE... STILL WAITING FOR THESE SPECIAL DIVE TABLES 🤣🤣... I'M JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS YOUNGER SIR, STILL DIVING, STAY SAFE 🇬🇧 🏴
Get them all love it great job
Thank you! Going out again this weekend!
i would really like to try some, i love seafood and i heard it tastes good
Question. Outside of catching for selling for consuming. Is it possible to just kill and leave it there?
Absolutely. If I am just diving without a zookeeper I just leave them for other fish to eat…maybe make other predators hunt them
I’m in Vancouver on the Pacific. We’ve got European green crab invaders. Thankfully the sea otters are returning and they’re voracious crab eaters
Spent Christmas and New Year’s at Caye Caulker in Belize. My daughter and I both got our open water certs.
Saw a few lion fish down there. Fortunately not in the numbers you are seeing. I had lion fish for dinner one night. Great meal, be aware of the small bones.
Looking forward to a lion fish hunt! ❤
Great job! Thanks for explaining some of the scuba terminology too. What/where are 'the Pyramids', please? Be great if a few more people could be convinced to eat them. Have seen three different creatures eating them now too - a Grouper hunting and eating one, a nurse (l think) shark trying to eat them from a divers sack and a snapper being fed one. Fingers crossed a few more creatures learn how to hunt and eat them.
Thank you!! We have pyramids all over the panhandle now. I usually hunt them in Destin and Pensacola.
I want to eat them but everywhere online is sold out. Don't live in the right region so can't go catch them either
Never been diving, never will.
Born & raised in So CA desert.
Your videos are very relaxing watching.
Your hobby/mission is a noble one, thanks for doing your part for the preservation of the reefs & little fish. I had no idea.
Ive wanted to taste lionfish ever since i heard about the derbys, i cant get any of my friends interested enough to make the trip with me
these videos would be even cooler with a KILL counter, a depth meter display, an oxygen level display , mission time elapsed display and so forth ^^
That’s a good idea! I have another dive like this scheduled for next week. I’m going to add that!
@@ActiveDutyOutdoorsAs long as it doesn't make you feel you have to push a limit that would be cool. What about videos from start to finish? Sometimes thee are other fish to look at, sometimes there are lionfish and sometimes there are none. A surprise evey time.
We need to breed a fish that thrives on lionfish eggs.
No kidding
Lol.😂
That has traditionally been the death of the natural balance of nature.
There is literally dozens of examples of how introducing a new species has led to disaster.
For that fish to eat up all other fish eggs too?
Love watching you take out those lion fish . I would love to join u. It looks like so much fun.
Thank you!! Come on with me, it’s a blast.
gotta change to a mask mount to keep the punctures in frame. not interesting to just see sand being disturbed and the fish being loaded into a tube
You are doing great work!
Nice man! I just got my open water certification in Destin last week. Any tips for a new lion fish hunter?
Awesome! Congrats on your certification!! It is an awesome accomplishment. Get some puncture resistant gloves and keep an eye on your gas, it’s easy to get task saturated when trying to manage everything dealing with just scuba diving and then adding hunting on top of it. If you have a dive computer with alarms, set a gas reminder.
100 feet for Lionfish is pretty deep, isn't it?
The nearest salt water is four or so hours away, we don't have lion fish in our impounded lakes here. I'm also not trained to scuba dive so really the invasive stuff we have here are released koi and duckweed.
Damn duckweed. That stuff is hard to get rid of.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors AMEN! They often lower the height of the two lakes around Austin. Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake) doesn't normally do it, but Lake Austin is lowered in hopes there is a hard freeze and kill back some of the duckweed. But if we get a lot of rain instead, they have to let it return to its normal level.
On some of your camera work we couldn't see you spread the fish.😮 1:48
I saw one on the beach in Panama City beach
We have these fish here in Australia but of course they're not an ecological night mare like they are in Florida. Im keen on coming over for a hunt is there anything I should look out for when hiring the gear?
Something consider, most of the first 5 minutes your camera angle was totally of your hands and the sandy bottom. I didn't think we would even see the 16" lionfish.
Man I wish we had this kind of fishing here in Coastal Virginia
They may make it up there. You’re water is pretty cold though, isn’t it?
Need to work on the camera game big time, my man. I'll subscribe so I can check up on ya from time to time. 😉
I fixed it now. My camera was in wide on this dive instead of Super view. Check out this latest video and tell me if it looks better.

Cool video!! I’ll be in Navarre week after next. If you wind up with a couple extras I’d love to try them!!
I subscribed to your channel if that helps. 😂
Lol! It sure does! Hopefully I’ll make it out again here soon. I’ll be out diving this weekend in Panama City Beach and then doing another dive like this on the 22d.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors Gotcha. I get into town on the 14th and leave the 20th. #1 priority for me is hitting the reefs as many days as possible while I’m in town. Try to stock up on snapper and whatever else I can catch trolling.
Awesome. The reefs are loaded with snapper. You should be able to pick up a few Mahi too. I catch them trolling out and back from the reefs.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors Yeah, saw your last video. You were on them good. I went for the first time 2 years ago and got my limit both days I was out. I’ve been dying to go again. Came down last year but couldn’t catch a day with good conditions. They were out of season anyway but would’ve still been fun to catch. I’m bringing my Motorguide w/ Spotlock with me this time. Can’t wait to get out there!!
Spotlock is awesome out there! We have had pretty good conditions for the last week or so, hopefully it keeps up. It’s awesome when the Gulf is flat.
Good work man 🤙
Thank you!
Is that some kind of ancient building? Looks like stonw work to me
Ok, now what restaurant has these on the menu? Since there are so many to catch, how about catching and eating?
There are quite few in Destin that have them on the menu. I know they are trying to open a market for them. They can’t be caught on hook and line gear (at least none that we have ever heard of) so spearing is the only way, that and lobster traps. They are really good to eat. I love making fish tacos out of them.
The lionfish have migrated all along the coasts.
They are unstoppable. Our biggest problem with them is that they can be very deep, we are good at getting the shallow ones but the deeper ones continue to breed and their offspring come up to the shallows.
Be safe my brother
Thanks, I will.
Thanks from New Orleans
We have the same problem in the Mediterranean. Especially in the warmer parts like Cyprus and northern Greece. You dont see much else other than rabbit and lion fish. Both invasive and both problematic.
That’s horrible. I heard they were bad over there too.
I think you missed one in the corner at 10:29
Butterfly Cod. Call it by its real name for food marketing.
Thanks for doing this, cool video they’re really good eating too btw if you didn’t know! But I’m sure you do
Thank you! Yes, they are very good to eat. I love making fish tacos with them on my blackstone!
Come to the Bahamas
Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
You’re welcome.
They should pay ppl who catch lionfish and give them something to encourage them
Do they??
I wish! There are a lot of competitions to hunt them and those pay pretty good money for the top teams.
Great video, need to raise that camera up a bit buddy.
Thank you. I noticed I had the recording in wide mode instead of super view. Check out my newer video and see if it looks better.
How much the license cost in a year ?
No license is required in Florida unless you use a hook and line to target them.
Not massacre. utilisation. Words have meanings.
Words do have meanings!
I was born and raised in Pensacola
I wonder how they got here.
The rumor is that they were initially released by pet owners. The other theory is ballast water from ships.
I would like to see the kill shot angle. You're doing good work, thanks for sharing!🍻
That would cool. I might hook my other GoPro up to the spear.
Nice 3prong… custom made?
No, I got it from the dive shop. It’s called a paralyzer tip.
gogo dont stop
So...fertilizer?
Yeah, pretty much! And a lot of it
I heard they taste great. Do restaurants buy them?
There are a couple wholesale places but not many yet. And, they do taste pretty dang good. No fish flavor at all.
What king of spear are you using? Are what would you recommend?
I am using a JBL pole spear with a paralyzer tip. It’s my favorite spear.
Tip: amzn.to/3KOJX5a
Spear: amzn.to/3KOJX5a
This is there really expensive one, I couldn’t find the exact one.
How deep are you in the water?
8:45 8 DIVES IN THE SAME DAY, 9:22 ALL TO A DEPTH OF 103 FEET(31 METRES) ??
Sounds dangerous. 😱
Great job... I have to do my research on these invasive pest'... how did they get to that part of the Atlantic and Florida in the first place, and how bad are they in the fresh water sources further inland?
Thank you. From my understanding and the popular theory is that someone or a few someones released their captive lionfish when they didn’t want them and that was the start. Another theory is that they were picked up in ballast water.
I saw a lion fish at 8:09
They get better. This was my first attempt at filming my lionfish hunts. All the new stuff can be seen on my new channel youtube.com/@thedeco_stop?si=K4XzjZG9pPhxKrpn
Great video of your hands
I did like the way my hands looked!
how much u get per killed fish?
Nothing unless it’s during a competition or if you have a commercial license. Depending on how many you bring in during the competitions you can get a lot for them.
There's a YT site called Growler Jams, an F18 pilot. You sound like his brother
what's that spear?
Its a JBL
How many did you get?
Shoot, I think on this dive we brought over 200 on the boat.
the feild of view wasnt very wide
Yeah, it was pretty bad on this video. I have the camera set up differently now in all the videos after this one.
The underwater filming is waaaay out of the frame!
Hell yeah
Man, it was awesome!
any vendors that you know of that’ll sell & ship filets out to me in Hawaii? I hear they taste good.
Buy me a plane ticket and I will hand deliver them! 😂. For real though, I am looking into getting a commercial license and looking for wholesalers.
You should use a better camera angle so we can actually see what your doing
I fixed it now. My camera was in wide on this dive instead of Super view. Check out this latest video and tell me if it looks better.

Come to Crete in Greece, we started having a boom of lionfish here in the aegean sea and they are eating the whole freakin fish population. Very nice for spearfishing though and beutiful place for vacay
I would love to go to Greece! I spent a little time in Europe while in the Air Force but never made it to Greece.
bad camera angle.... but good work!
Thank you. Yes, the camera angle was crap on this dive.
I really miss Pensacola! Lionfish is my favorite aquarium fish. Can you keep them if you catch them?
Also, I didn't know they were edible .
I think so. I know a few guys that catch the little ones for their tanks. They are very good to eat too, really no fish taste at all.
You really need to adjust your camera so we can actually see what you're doing at least most of the time, the angles were really bad. :)

Bad camera angle and you should lay out your catch at the end.
Thanks for the feedback. I stayed filming with a wider angle that captures more now.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors Awesome. Love the vids though.

That camera is effing useless!
People are starving and your giving perfectly good fish to the zoo wtf
I have tried replying to this but it keeps saying I havent.. youtube is weird sometimes.
My main reply was that I like animals more than people…
Please adjust your camera angle...show the fish, not your arm or the zookeeper
Good feedback. I’m pretty sure I had my camera on wide instead of superview. Hopefully it’s fixed now.
Massacre-what a stupid choice of words- how about huge harvest , etc etc
yea we didn't see it either cuz your camera work is horrible all I see is your hands.
Yeah, as others have noted on this video my camera angle was jacked up. Back rolling in tends to mess up the camera. After learning this little life lesson I fix my camera after rolling in. My newer Lionfish videos are way better.
Horrible placement of your camera.
Great view of your hands... try actually capturing the spearing next time... Thumbs down.
Thanks for the feedback. Rolling backwards into the water pushed my camera down. It was fixed on the next video.
Thanks! I will take a look. I bet it's a lot of fun and many people say they are tasty. Good luck and happy hunting!@@ActiveDutyOutdoors
@Giolongino1963 they are really fun to hunt and one of the best fish I have eaten. It’s cool because it gives diving a purpose. Thanks for watching!
