great tips becca!!! i agree about having everything in one place for ease of reference. i just got scrivener so i've been putting everything in there from the 4 separate places i stored my book info lol. i used to get distracted as well (and i still do sometimes!), but it helps a lot to keep it all organized. i liked the idea of having my first put-together draft go to my trusted loved ones, and then once i've made those edits, the next draft is ready for beta readers. i think i'll do just that!! 💛

aw thanks miranda! yeah, i just like keeping the story close to the vest at first. I feel like getting outside input too early in the writing process can distract you from telling the story you want to tell.

14:34 ahhhh I’m so guilty of tracking my word count, like, I obsess over it (I try not to but it’s hard to break habit 😭) it gives me such a high when I break through my wordcount goal but when I’m on days where I’m just so busy and can’t write, I feel awful because ik my daily wordcount goal is gonna be higher 🥲 aaah love the video so much, Becca!

I really felt the candle analogy 😇I alwats run into the issue of having waaay too many ideas and sometimes those ideas get too big, but also a new shiny story idea comes along and I used to either feel terrible about making myself let it go or latching onto the new one and letting that grow and running a rinse repeat cycle. Keeping an idea notebook, just something to chuck my ideas into for later has really helped. I call it my story pot because it's like letting the idea cook 😂

yes! having a story pot is so smart! It's good to have a place for your ideas (:

Hi, I’m Avi I love your videos so much! I just found you about a couple of weeks ago and subscribed. I have one question, how do you write, plot, outline, and write rough (0) drafts as a perfectionist? I find that every time I go to write I’m crumbling up the metaphorical paper and starting over. Like I feel like all my drafts have to be New York Times bestseller worthy or I’ve failed. I always have this imaginary audience in my head criticizing everything I write. “Your characters are flat, the dialogue sucks, that plot is stupid. Etc.” and honestly it discourages me from even writing. I can’t seem to just get out of my head and just let it suck at first, and then go back and clean it up. Any tips?

Hi Avi! oof that is a great question. Honestly, you have to let yourself be bad at it so that you can get better. There's literally no other way around it. The rough draft is supposed to be really, really bad! No one publishes a first draft! Think of the audience in your head not as negative, but as help for when you revise that first draft. Your brain is noticing and calling out issues in your writing that you can go back and fix. The characters will lack depth, the dialogue will feel stiff, the plot might have some holes in it, but how are you going to know where and how to improve those things if you don't get it down on paper first? I'm a perfectionist, too, but i've really pushed myself to set that aside while i'm writing because i care more about improving my craft than being it being perfect from the start. Live in the moment of writing the book instead of a future that might not happen. Don't write because you want your book to be successful. Write because you absolutely HAVE to tell your story.
I think you're just putting way too much pressure on yourself (speaking from wayyy too much experience here). Have fun with it!
