That filled in “strap button hole” at the top. In the video it flew by pretty quickly but I’m wondering if that was a hole created to drill a channel for the toggle switch that was later filled.
Was 16 years old in 78 and hanging out in the local music stores trying to pickup knowledge and make friends with other people my age to play music with. I remember the posters but it wasn't till later that they actually got one or two of the models which were snapped up quite quickly.
It was a given that you had to play Star Spangled banner. But would've also been great if you could've crammed in Grand Funk Railroads American Band. Maybe if you do a review on the othe USA map guitar you can squeeze it in.
The brazilian guitar is owned by Roberto Medina, the founder of Rock In Rio Festival and sits in his office right now, but it was used on Scorpions in 2019 Rock In Rio performance, there is plenty of footage of the guitar if you search here
Story goes that Matthias Jabs asked Gibson to create a "Rock in Rio" logo- shaped guitar with a Brazilian paint job for Scropion's participation in 1985 Rock in Rio (the very first edition). After the show he gave it to Roberto Medina, as you mentioned. And Medina actually kept the guitar all these years! So he lent it to Mathias to play again in 2019, very very cool.
I don't understand why the Gibson guy wrote that he couldn't find any traces of it online. There are lots of images of Jabs with that guitar, there's plenty footage too, and even a live DVD that has a picture on the back of the sleeve.
@@leonardodufloth9309 LOL, older people? You mean lazy and ignorant people 😂 I'm 63 and was on the internet almost before it even existed hahaha! Most people these days don't even bother to look things up, they just ask somebody else instead, out of laziness, I see it all the time.
On a serious note, congratulations on getting this piece of history. You went "hard in the paint" and it paid off. We are all proud of you Trogly...well done.
Cannot believe you found the actual guitar. That is unbelievable. I would go to my local Gibson dealer and pick up those gorgeous photo books and then hang them on my wall. I spent many hours thinking about how that strange shape would play, and today I got to see and hear it. Well done…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That Schaller bridge at 11:05 is super rare. They discontinued them back in 2011 I think. Schaller 456 bridge. I still have mine, didn't realize they would sell crazy high now
Geography is important. The toggle switch actually sits about where Herkimer, NY is and the bingo chip covers most of central NY and the Adirondack Mountains. The piece that you mentioned that is missing from the production guitars is not Michigan. It is the Door County Peninsula of Wisconsin. I am so glad that you have this guitar in your collection because I know it will be well cared for. Great find and great video.
Trogly, Matthias Jabs from Scorpions used this "Brazil" guitar on the 1985 and 2019 Rock in Rio editions. If you put it on Google Images, you'll find some pictures of the guitar.
Oh Austin I am sooooo happy for you! I know how bad you wanted this guitar. I was surprised at how good it sounds. What a perfect way to celebrate the 4th of July. I am a very proud American and when you played the Star Spangled Banner it made me cry. Wow! what a wonderful episode. This is my favorite show. I never miss an episode. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with us. I have learned so much from you. I have learned much about my own Gibsons that I didn't know. You are literally the coolest dude on the planet! Happy 4th and thank you again for everything. God bless you and your family.
Congrats on finding this beauty, and also keeping it a secret for ALL this time! I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and was always intrigued by this guitar as well! What an amazing find!
I remember seeing that United States guitar in 1983ish! I thought that's way too much for me! I got the 83 pearl white les paul custom with chainsaw case. Still got it! Thanks 😊
PS: I've got a guitar for your museum! It's an Epiphone Joan sebastian triunfadora! Acoustic! The very rare hearts, horseshoes, crosses! Abalone binding. If you're interested? Thanks
I remember seeing this guitar on the Gibson catalogue at a UK Dealer back in the late 1970s early 1980s. In fact I've still got the catalogue somewhere in a gear folder in the attic. Turned out to be a great Trogly Guitar Show this episode complete with history and a couple of examples for your collection and on the 4th of July too.. Great work, Austin, definately original...
I'm Canadian, but I can definitely appreciate " star spangled banner " on that particular axe, as I've asked in prior comments, let us trogidites know when the museum opens , I'll buy an all day pass. May have to wear a bib so not to drool on your magnificent collection
There was a stars and strips model at Snukst music in Chicago, IL. The place closed years ago and it was a total disaster, but he had more guitars in that store than you even imagine. It was like a clothing store with the racks and racks and RACKS of guitars. I'd say in a 2000 sq ft building he had to have 5-6k guitars in that place. And he had one of EVERYTHING.
Your joy conveys in such a genuine way across the web. I felt happy as well as I listened to your excitement. Congrats and thank you for some real quality content. What a way to celebrate the 4th of July!
Very cool! At my first job in the graphics/printing business we worked on and printed that very poster. We also worked on other Gibson guitar poster/ ads for The Lucille, Reissue original Flying V.
Congrats on the find. As for the finish I’d guess tung oil, although that was embargoed in the US in part of the 80s due to tension with China (hence the beginning scene of ‘Beetlejuice’) As for the Brazil guitar Mattius Jabs played it at the 1985 Rock in Rio, and again in 2019 so he still has it. He also had a Deutschland guitar just after reunification, although I don’t know if that was Gibson.
I had a hard cover book when I was a kid. It was like the pictorial history of guitars, I think it was called ultimate guitar or something like that. It’s soo cool to see those actual guitars on your show. I was blown away when you found “The Paul”. It was always my favorite in that book. Austin gets so many guitars where I'm like "Oh, that's really cool...but it's not something I'd ever want". But this, this truly makes me green with envy.
I probably overpaid for my 83 4 knob, maple neck, crown inlay version, but it's still the only one I've seen in the UK. I'm pretty sure it's not the only one, but that rarity does give me the hope that my wife might get the money back, or a small profit, after I visit Kalamazoo in the sky.
Her memento….will just have to be a guitar shaped like another country! Cheers, bangers and mash, mushy peas, fish and chips, bitter and ale! And wonderful Indian food! Glad you have one of these!
I had the ad poster for this hanging on my wall back in the 80s. There was a local music store in my town where I grew up and I would go in there and get brochures music equipment mainly of Peavey and Gibson stuff. I loved this ad and picture so much. And I remember seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan for the first time not long after I put this picture up on my wall - well that just did it for me I was totally reeled in.
In your vid you make a number of comments about the mat finish. This makes complete sense to me. It was made to be photographed. The thin matt finish makes it much essier to photograph under studio settings. The grain will show more and the color balance will be easier to control without light reflecting off a gloss surface. This is especially true when photographing it at the angle shown in the brochure.
I shoul add that I am a camera collector that restores large format wood cameras which I then photograph. My guess is that the finnish is a simple oil or possibly a thin nitro cellulose finish as suggested by an earlier commentor.
I was in high school in the 80s and had to do a report in English. My teacher let me choose guitars so I reached out to Gibson. I quickly received a 3rd class mail package on Sept 17 1984. Dave's Guitars in La Crosse, WI has one in the museum part of their shop. It is pretty cool. Pretty sure they have one with the toggle in that location - but I might be wrong.
I would want one just because I am a proud AMERICAN , thanks to Gibson and all of its employees over the years , you have made one Guitar player very happy !
i got that gibson brochure i got it from a music store here in Missouri. for years i didn't think it was a real guitar but apparently it is. i like hondo guitars. guitars are one piece of wood.
What a Find!! At 13 I was mowing grass saving up for my first name brand guitar. I saw this in Guitar World mag and wanted it. I went to my local guitar seller and saw one just like this. I came home with Ibanez RG🎸👍🎸
A modern Epiphone reissue of the ORIGINAL photoshoot version (bc lets be real its the best looking) would be so incredible. I think they could pull it off, I wouldn't wanna encourage Gibson because they'd be 50 bazillion dollar masterbuilt things lol.
Both look incredible as i remember seeing the poster way back when. Id guess the one on the bench likely got a coat of light oil and thats probably it.
I seem to remember that these "Map" guitars were released in 1976 for the American bicentennial. The ones I saw back then were always painted with the red, white & blue paint scheme. It seems from this video you're under the impression they were first made in the early 80's, but I just don't think that's accurate. Elyse Steinmann from Raging Slab had two "maps," one painted and one natural. The painted one weighed a ton and had a super chunk neck profile. She also had two other ones custom made that had slimmer bodies and the hard edges were rounded off for comfort.
‘76 was when the explorer came back and the Bicentennial Firebirds came out which did have a red white and blue bird logo which you’re probably thinking of
Dadgum, Austin. Thank you so much for your show. I have learned so so much and had hours and hours of beautiful guitar entertainment. Congratulations on this find.
I could almost swear I saw this guitar at the House of Guitars in Rochester NY in the early 80's. I was looking for one too because I thought it would be a cool gimmicky guitar for performing. Great get. Congratulations!

You can tell by the way that it is.

Indeed a true American guitar..........it's not worth much. A-Ha!
The PERFECT riff to play on this guitar at 28:20.

A true one of a kind. My first Gibson pamphlet was that one (I got in a music store in ATL). A little later in 1986, I had a special black doubleneck made with gold hdw and cranks.

I had a 78 Les Paul Custom with the crank tuning pegs, so they were definitely available at that time.
I'd seen Dave Meniketti from the rock band Y&T playing a stars and stripes version. On a TV show playing the song Face Like an Angel back in 85'.
I would go to a Trogly’s guitar museum if he opened one!
You finally got it!
Congrats Trogly, that was a cool find.
LOL. Brings me back to Guitar Mags of the 70s. The Paul was under $500 and so was the US Strat LOL.

Whoa! I live in the toggle switch!😀
I'm so happy for you, I remember the Spirit ep. Long time comin'
Now someone should make you a guitar pedal shaped like Hawaii !... great story , Thanks Trog !
Playing out of an Alaska-shaped cab!! The Hawaii pedal could be one switch per island!
Very cool piece, great stories. One of your best videos to date.

The most interesting vid so far, Austin! Just fabulous! Thank you, Hutch!
The late great Elysia Steinman from the band Raging Slab plays slide on one on the song "Don't Dog Me!
The Guitar Store in Pomona Ca had that guitar in the early 80’s.
Great guitar. Being non American, just had the best geography lesson in ages. 👍🎸🎸🎸🎸
Your choice of song for the distortion bridge made me smile
Truly happy for ya buddy. I know it's been along time
Thanks for your show , I really enjoy your knowledge of Guitars , I am a long time player but did not have any knowledge of Guitars .
I also remember seeing this add on this guitar way back as a young teenager around 1980 or so. Congratulation on finding it man 🤙
I loved the headstock on this one, the lack of clear, the logo, the turners
