One thing I noticed and love about Pandit Shamta Prasad Ji is that when he plays it's subconscious, notice when he starts the rela he looks to the musicians to ensure they stay steady and on point. If you listen to his style and presentation, you realize that Ustad Zakir Hussain ji was his fan and other then his own father adapted styles from Pandit Shamta Prasad Ji.
@Putt Punjabi there are many Pandits and Ustads but Pt. Shamta prasadji was a real all-rounder who could do anything with his instrument. A true magician!!!
Thanks for uploading this great footage. He is my favourite tabla player of all time. I was first captivated by his playing when I first heard Raga Bhairavi Thumri featuring Ustad Bismillah Khan and Ustad Vilayat Khan many years ago. On that recording he plays with such restraint but in this video we can see more of his talent. Fabulous tabla player.
I am surprised to see 45 dislikes. Even if they do not know classic of Tabla, the rythem he is playing is superb in hearing. If these people are far from music then leave it but why to dislike and show disrespect to such high calibre artists.
You are right. As he told in his interview that he had not played 100% pure banaras baaj. All good things of diffrent gharanas were played by him with banarasi punch. Really great maestro he was.
Brilliant. Loved your observation brownboy.. One tabla student I met in Lucknow related how his Guruji would somtimes sleep while he was practising and yet he would still correct any mistakes he made while asleep!

I think Samta Prashad ji himself followed Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa. You can even see in this video.
