One of the guys they showed as a Walk-On who made it big was Stetson Bennett, who last year won the National Championship at Georgia as their starting Quarterback. He's still playing this year and Georgia is undefeated and the #1 ranked team in the country. That's an incredible success story because behind him on the bench are 5-Star recruits who everyone expected to start.
It's sad that their oldest brother was unable to play because if he took a bad hid, he could have wound up paralyzed. He was a great quarterback too. He just had his career ended too soon.
@@robinaddis-vaughn7271 Peyton and Eli both have said Cooper is the funniest/prankster in the family. Yes. It is too bad about his missed career, but his son Arch is absolutely balling!
Most walk-ons have to pay out of pocket for their first year of college. They get their scholarship if the coaches want to bring them back. Some, if I'm not mistaken, can earn the scholarship mid-season if they play well enough. JJ Watt asked his parents if they would take a chance on him making the team at Wisconsin (Badgers). He had played a season at Central Michigan, but wanted a higher profile school where scouts look for talent and to play in his home state. They agreed. He got his scholarship, was drafted in round 1, 2011, by the Texans, was a three-time defensive player of the year and voted #1 in the NFL Top 100, which is an award voted on by NFL players. He was also given the Walter Payton 'man of the year' award for his efforts after Hurricane Harvey in Houston. It worked out.
Baker Mayfield was a walk-on at two schools, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. He won the Heisman Trophy. The only walk-on to ever win the Heisman Trophy. Then he was the #1 pick in the 2018 draft. Had two great years but has fallen on some hard times now.
He's retired now but Jay Ajayi was a British NFL player, won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2017-18 season but had a bad knees that caused him to retire early. He was really good when he was healthy, especially early on when he played for the Miami Dolphins.

You get very few Walk-Ons at the big programs but they usually have a few and if they do well enough (even just being great teammates in practice) they sometimes get a valuable scholarship. Famously Mike Leach the eccentric former coach of Texas Tech saw a student come out of the stands at halftime to win a kicking competition. The kid kicked a field goal right down the center in front of a packed stadium, and Leach put him on the team and the kid never missed an extra point.
Alabama has 49 walk-ons on its roster. Every major program has at least 35 of them. Very few of them ever get to dress for games, though. They are mostly just bodies for practice.
The scholarship max is like 85, but team cap is like 125. So while the will rarely make anything but garbage time of a blow out, it is pretty common for major programs to have them in positions that need a lot of rotation in practice or on the scout team.
Leighton Vander Esche walked on at Boise State and become a 1st round pick for the Cowboys. He was playing Intramural football and walked on becoming one of the best LB's in the country. Barney Amor the kid who got the scholarship is a Punter and is being rated highly.
It's pretty common for walk ons to play on special teams and even in scrimmage plays during blowouts so usually if a walk on earns a scholarship it's a player who has earned playing time and proven he deserves the full ride.
Check out the story of Notre Dame football walk-on Rudy Ruetigger. There are numerous segments on him on RUclips and there's also the movie - Rudy (1993).
One guy that I always thought about being a Denver Broncos fan was Rod Smith. He didn't walk-on in college but he didn't go to a major College either (Missouri Southern). He went undrafted in the NFL and signed with the Broncos and spent his whole career in Denver (16 seasons). He holds almost all the receiving records in team history. The biggest thing even in the prime of his career he never got complacent and always treated every season like it was the one where the team could release him. He had so much respect that Jerry Rice's final season he signed with the Broncos in the offseason Rod Smith wore number 80 as well, and Jerry Rice refused to take the number from Smith.

I've been a Giants fan since 1989. I love Eli Manning. He's just a good, decent guy, not an arrogant asshole like Aaron Rogers or others. His whole family is all about football.
In America, a walk-on is a non-scholarship player who was not invited. They are paying their way through college, and they usually don't play actual games. They help prepare the team. The movie "Greater" is about Brandon Burlsworth. A football walk-on who did actually play in games, and winded up going pro. The movie is available for free on youtube right now. More than being a movie about 'walk-ons', it's a movie about perseverance and doing everything you can to succeed.

A college walk-on is someone who makes a college team (college eligible) without any financial aid (they pay their way with there own money), a walk-on can earn an athletic scholarship (mostly partial, but sometimes full depending on the time of year). There are college teams that have guys in their mid 20s to early 30s, those are walk-ons, anybody with eligibility and good enough can make it. Just like when NFL or NBA TEAMS holds open tryouts, they make the g-league then maybe a roster (get a contract). Those are UFA (undrafted free agents).
There was a guy who used to deliver beer and decided to try out for the New Orleans saints. He made it. He was called “the Budweiser Man” or “Beer Man”. He was so good!

In college, a walk on is someone who didn't get a scholarship out of high school to come and play. If you want to see a video that will get emotional, check out when the teams actually provide walk on players who do well with a full page scholarship as a reward. It brings tears to the eyes.
Vince Papale is the true story that they used as inspiration for the always sunny story about trying out for the eagles, they made the movie "invincible" about him too.
State universities like Penn State (shown here) and others are typically around 15k dollars per year for tuition if you live in that state. Double that or more if you're from out of state. Hundreds of thousands of dollars for tuition is mostly reserved for Ivy league schools or if you're spending many years in school.
For Penn State an out of state tuition is about $50,000/year (two semesters) with room and board to start (and it goes up from there depending on housing, field of study etc). Athletic scholarships cover that plus all the other perks of being on a Division one football team (special nutrition, clothing and gear, travel, etc). A lot of guys who are collegiate athletes that don't have scholarships often have to balance classes, homework, a demanding football practice/training/traveling schedule, and work jobs to provide themselves with books and food etc, and the stress for parents to provide tuition. A scholarship is literally life changing even if you don't go on to the NFL.
At Penn State, the cost of tuition at the main campus in State College, PA (with room and meals) is $32,000 per year for Pennsylvania residents, and $53,000 for out-of-state residents.
Levi Wallace walked on as a corner back at Alabama. Became a starter and won a national championship. He didn't get drafted but the Buffalo Bills gave him a chance as an undrafted free agent. He won the job, and started for them 4 years. Now he starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I love that you guys watched this! Peyton and Eli are pretty hilarious together. They also did a football camp together every year for young quarterbacks. They do a thing for Monday Night Football where they watch the games together and give their commentary, and have other players and celebrities on as well. Peyton is hilarious, IMO. Here’s a compilation of his funniest moments. Eli is in it too. Tom Brady is in it as well, along with many other athletes and the Manning family. Their dad was also a professional QB, and their older brother would’ve been as well, but health issues ended his career. ruclips.net/video/ajCN9_gPrPI/видео.html
Office blokes It's not exactly a walk-on story but kind of After retirement the Pittsburgh Steelers really needed a good linebacker. They needed somebody that could come in and fill the position that knew the plays. They called James Harrison a man that had retired a year or two before. .... How long would it take you to get back into football shape they asked him.... .... Get back into shape? I wake up at 4:00 a.m. and do the exact same workout I did every day when I played professional football. So they hired him out of retirement and within a matter of days, he was crushing men on the field, both the oldest player in the NFL at the time, and the strongest. Could bench press over 500 lb, and still run down a quarterback and destroy his life LOL
Quite a few walk-ons are guys who the school recruits and still asks to come there despite not having a scholarship for them. Top level colleges (D1-A/ FBS) have 85 head-count scholarships max. Schools like Alabama, Texas, and Penn State all have 115-120 players. Most kickers, punters, and long snappers will never see an athletic scholarship at these schools. Several will get academic scholarships. D1-AA/ FCS schools have 65 equivalency scholarships, D2 has 35 equivalency, and D3 is not allowed to provide any athletic scholarships. Several players who are recruited to be a walk-on (preferred walk-on) get offers to a lower division or same division and a worse team and choose to pay to play at the bigger/better school with the chance to earn a scholarship.
In college football there is a Burlsworth Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding FBS college football player who began his career as a walk-on. It is named for a University of Arkansas walk-on who became an All-American and was drafted into the NFL but tragically died in a car crash soon afterward. One of the quick clips of the successful walk-ons shown briefly was Baker Mayfield. He walked on first at Texas Tech, took over the QB position after an injury to the starter before the first game, and was 5-0 when he himself was injured. He wasn't given a scholarship, so left Tech and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma and walked-on again. He ended up winning the Heisman Trophy, twice named a Burlsworth Award winner, and became the #1 NFL draft pick by the Browns. He led them to a playoff win, their first since 2002, before injuries have practically ruined his career.
A walk on is basically just a player who wasn't scouted and/or offered a scholarship and makes the team through an open try out. A few players make it onto college teams in football and basketball but rarely go any higher than being a practice team player.
HUGE matchup this weekend for Penn State and major rivalry too. Ohio State vs Penn State. I'll be rooting for PSU, but Ohio has an amazing team over there. They are hugely favored. But I've seen some crazy Penn State wins against Ohio in the past. Hopefully another miracle happens this weekend!
If you want another really funny video to react to: Keegan Michael Key of Key and Peele is a Penn State Alum, a few years ago he visited the team to give them a speech before one of their games, only he did it impersonating coach Franklin. I'm sure you can see the similarities lol. It was really funny and the kids reaction to him was awesome
Most likely all players offered scholarships, whether they started as a walk-on or not, will have a very high chance of playing in games at some point. There are other ways to get in the game besides on offense & defense, called "special teams" (punts, kickoffs, field goals/extra points, and punt & kick returns). Even many highly recruited players (with scholarships from the start) get started off playing on special teams, in their first year or two. There are players who manage to play in games when they still haven't been offered scholarships yet, even on offense & defense, and even at the Division-1/FBS level (top level). Some walk-ons are solid contributors for those teams for at least a couple years before they're offered scholarships. There are also a few levels of college football below that. I'd think most players good enough to make D-1/FBS teams as walk-ons would likely be able to get scholarships on the lower level teams for sure. But I don't know if many, or any players at those levels get full scholarships or only partial ones. Partial scholarships are what most athletes in "non-revenue" sports (anything besides football & basketball - that don't net the universities a profit) get, if they get any scholarship at all.
There is an award given to players that started as a walk-on and received a scholarship during their time at university, it is called the Burlsworth award. Named after Brandon Burlsworth, played at the University of Arkansas as a walk-on, put in the work and earned a scholarship. Was drafted by the Colts for NFL play, and was killed in a car wreck before he ever got to play professionally. There was a movie made a few years ago about him, called "Greater". Highly recommend it.
Dave, typically if you're a walk-on and you're being awarded a scholarship, you have already been given some amount of game time. They're awarding you the scholarship because you have proven yourself to be a worthy commodity or component to the team in one way or another. Some of the more recent and famous walk-on's in college football have been Stetson Bennett of Georgia who won a National Championship and also Baker Mayfield who walked on at both Texas Tech University and the University of Oklahoma and won the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma. He was in the top 4 of Heisman voting in all 3 years he was a starter.
Not sure what happened to him.. But in h.s. We had a qb that could throw a 75 yard pass.. not a hail Mary where you run and Chuck it and hope. A straight up designed play, 75 yard pass.. And like a laser.. not the 20 ft high arc. It was amazing. Like a young John elway
A walk on is a person that did not get scouted and offered a scholarship to be in the team. He walks on to the field and tries out to make the team. A current walk on that made it to the NFL and still playing is JJ Watt.
Around 10 years back a high school educated, 50 year old man, walked on at I believe North Dakota State and made the team. Unless any of you went to college in the states, you’re probably NCAA eligible to play college football.
Peyton and Eli's dad, Archie Manning, was a star in College and played for many years in the NFL for the worst team in the league. I watched that man get the living hell beat out of him, Sunday after Sunday, slinging the ball and running for his life. If he had been on a decent team he would have easily been one of the top QB's ever. He'd stand in the pocket, knowing he was going to get hammered, and throw a 60 yard bullet pass right into the hands of a wide receiver in the end zone. The receiver would then drop the pass while Archie was getting pounded into the dirt. Those were the days when it was okay to hit the QB any way you liked. For a treat, watch some of Archie's highlights. It's brutal.
Colleges recruit players to play and They generally have 85 players on a full scholarship which pays tuition, room, food, and books. Walk ons are guys not on scholarship who try out to make it as a walk on. They love the game, might be late bloomers who grew a bunch over a short period of time, etc. some of the best videos are where an unsuspecting walk-on gets put on scholarship. It’s a huge deal with school costing 30-50 thousand dollars a year.
Philly is a HUGE sports town. All the "big time" players support the other teams. Especially with the Eagles doing well and Phillies going to the World Series
Peyton Manning and Cooper Manning are on "College Bowl" here in the USA. Teams of three represent their school in a knowledge bowl. My alma mater is in the semi-finals this year! I have to wait till next week to find out if BYU wins.
With a scholarship, obviously the tuition is a massive thing but also consider that it includes all the extras like all the food/drinks that they get from the team nutritionist, they usually get better accommodation, loads of free team merch to wear etc. It's a ridiculous experience. I would recommend watching a "day in the life of a D1 player" video to get an idea. Someone like @Hangtime who is a punter at OU has some great videos showing what life is like for a football player. It's a crazy life!
College tuition is extremely expensive. Currently, at Penn State, a four-year degree (bachelor's degree) - just tuition (no room, meals, books, misc. fees) is about $75,000 for a Pennsylvania resident, and for a resident of any other state is over $150,000. Scholarships are so important. Most of us pay off student loans for years.
College is generally expensive but it's also a function of various factors. In the US there are usually "state colleges" that are cheaper for state residents but more expensive for out of state residents, Private Universities that might be cheaper for state residents but not as cheap as "state schools". There are city and community colleges which are usually cheaper still. And i'm using cheap relatively speaking. It's all pricey for normal people. For example. UCLA is in Los Angeles and is technically a private university that's part of a system in California called the University of California system of "UC" for short. It includes UC Berkley, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego. But there are also "state schools" like San Diego State University, San Jose State University and many others. All in California but one is part of a public state university system the other is private. And then there city colleges, like Los Angeles City College. City colleges often have students that cant afford more expensive schools, can't afford to move away from home, older adults adding skills, students that failed out of Private or state schools trying to prove they are good enough students to get re-admitted to the prior private or state school.
People make fun of the Mannings, UT they are hilarious. Their family runs a football camp here at Nicholls State University every year and help hundreds of high school players advance their skills.
The dude who played Rudy also played Sam Gamgees in the Lord of the Rings movies. Sean Astin mom was Patty Duke. Famous child actor from the 60'. He thought for many years John Astin who played Gomez Addams from the Addams family was his dad. But it turned out it was some random guy. But he kept the Astin name.
Baker Mayfield walked on at Texas tech won the starting job at QB got injured transferred to the university of Oklahoma walked on won the starting job and won the Heisman trophy for the best player in college football
It's amazing to see how excited the scholarship players get for their teammate that gets a new scholarship. And you're probably looking at about $50k per year for college.
getting on scholarship is huge because it not only means you're probably gonna be a starter but most importantly it means you're saving 30k + semester (2 semesters make up a single year) at a private university. by the way penn state (that college) is 51,000 a year for out of state tuition meaning your family doesn't live in Pennsylvania. so yeah he's saving potentially 200,000 dollars on his 4 year undergraduate degree
My cousin only has like $18k in debt & is about to graduate at a “D1” (Big sport colleges) “Troy University” with a degree… it’s no wheres near “100s” of thousands of dollars… even for colleges like Alabama…
Some current "walk-ons" in the NFL are QB Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Hunter Renfro, and all-time great, first-ballot-no-doubt Hall-of-Famer J.J. Watt. Dreams can come true! Dave's Eagles' player Vince Papale was immortalized in Mark Wahlberg's flick _Invincible!_ 👍

That's honestly ridiculous how expensive that is
Oh this is a great video. You guys are gonna love this one
At Penn State, the cost of tuition at the main campus in State College, PA (with room and meals) is $32,000 per year for Pennsylvania residents, and $53,000 for out-of-state residents.
7:00 Wait a minute! He looks like Dave! LOL 😂😂🤣🤣 3-:
This may be my favorite reaction video you guys have done. What an awesome ending !!!
"Play Football" is a great channel that'll show 1on1 match ups during the game. I recently discovered it and I'm really enjoying their content.
ManningCast is the best thing to happen to football
I think they say Cooper Manning was a wr and a better athlete than both his brothers.
They are both so funny. Dry sende of humor.
"Until he's 26"!!!!!
Dang that was funny!!!!
He looks like the nail comes out next t uesday guy from happy gilmore
Office blokes
It's not exactly a walk-on story but kind of
After retirement the Pittsburgh Steelers really needed a good linebacker.
Scotland’s David Ojabo was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft.
For reference university of Missouri is about 29k a year for in state students for a 4 year program.
Don’t call them Ohio. You wouldn’t call us Penn. those are different schools, my friend.
At Penn State, tuition for in-state students is right at $18k a year. Out of state tuition is over $32,000. Not including food, books, or dorm fees.
The Jared Goff undercover one is pretty good too. He at least looks more like a college student so it was more convincing.
We reacted to that one 👍🏻
You guys are awesome reactor’s love your stuff. Great accents too lol
Another fun video of a famous person going undercover: Jewel in disguise at a karaoke bar.
"You'd be suspicious he was gonna grab your bum in the shower" well this is Penn State we're talking about. It's not unheard of.
Jay Ajai played five seasons with Miami and Philly and won a Super Bowl ring. Born in London.
Jordy Nelson was a walk-on at Kansas State University and played for the Green Bay Packers (successfully). FYI.
In state tuition at PSU is 10K a semester + probably. A full scholarship can add up real fast.
Not sure everyone knows that Eli earned $252 million during his 16 year career. Now that is not walk-on money.
To answer Dave's question there are a LOT of players from smaller schools that never got recruited or players from other programs that walk on
Peyton and Eli's dad, Archie Manning, was a star in College and played for many years in the NFL for the worst team in the league.
Eli went 3rd and it was a wrap from there on in.
The guy is funnier than I have ever seen him. Great Vid.
React to Eli's SNL skits. They're hilarious. Embarrassing Text Message and Motion Capture are the best ones.
A lot of Australians become punters in the States coming from Rugby academies. Lately, rugby punting has been a must have for most programs
Peyton Manning and Cooper Manning are on "College Bowl" here in the USA. Teams of three represent their school in a knowledge bowl. My alma mater is in the semi-finals this year! I have to wait till next week to find out if BYU wins.
you should react to Players Being Surprised By Scholarships Compilation such a buzz watching that video!
JJ Watt, one of the best defensive players ever was a walk on at Wisconsin
College tuition is extremely expensive. Currently, at Penn State, a four-year degree (bachelor's degree) - just tuition (no room, meals, books, misc. fees) is about $75,000 for a Pennsylvania resident, and for a resident of any other state is over $150,000. Scholarships are so important. Most of us pay off student loans for years.
One movie after this, blokes...."Rudy" 'nuff said.
The Mannings are an institution. You guys should definitly check out more stuff with them.
People make fun of the Mannings, UT they are hilarious. Their family runs a football camp here at Nicholls State University every year and help hundreds of high school players advance their skills.
Most 40.yard dashes are in the low to mid 4 second range...
Tuition at Penn State is 50,000 a year for a perspective on how expensive it is
If you're interested in what a walk-on is... the movie RUDY is probably the most famous movie about what it means to be a walk-on.
Came to type this, glad someone else did. It's such a great, feel-good movie.
Most walk ons who make it tend to be bench players or on the practice squad. The elite players will be recruited to start.
getting on scholarship is huge because it not only means you're probably gonna be a starter but most importantly it means you're saving 30k + semester (2 semesters make up a single year) at a private university. by the way penn state (that college) is 51,000 a year for out of state tuition meaning your family doesn't live in Pennsylvania. so yeah he's saving potentially 200,000 dollars on his 4 year undergraduate degree
Sounds like your "walk on" games are like our "pick up" games
My cousin only has like $18k in debt & is about to graduate at a “D1” (Big sport colleges) “Troy University” with a degree… it’s no wheres near “100s” of thousands of dollars… even for colleges like Alabama…
You blokes might watch the movie "Rudy" about a very unlikely walk-on at Notre Dame University.
Thumbs up before it starts
Some current "walk-ons" in the NFL are QB Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Hunter Renfro, and all-time great, first-ballot-no-doubt Hall-of-Famer J.J. Watt.
Dreams can come true! Dave's Eagles' player Vince Papale was immortalized in Mark Wahlberg's flick _Invincible!_ 👍
You guys absolutely should react to some walk-on scholarship announcements
