This book was very fast-paced. Jumps around a good deal and ends very abruptly with no wrap-up at all. I really like the character and the direction, The villain character was cool and the organization he's with I definitely want to see more of. Art was done really well, and I definitely was left wanting more, so overall, it was a win, IMO.
For me, this book was a "B-". The art was great, but Mike Baron's story structure could've used more work. He should've been 90+ pages to work with. It would've felt more fleshed out. My first gripe with this book was the last fight between Cato and Ron. More should've been said between the two. My second second gripe with this book was we never got to see Ron's home life. What MADE him the way he is? Lastly, I think Eric needs to step down from Editor-In-Chief and get a veteran co-writer. Each book does have a slight improvement over the last one, but it feels like something's always missing 🤷🏾♂️. He has an obvious passion for his universe, but he needs experienced/veteran help.
I would say that it's a fair assessment. I do view this building stage of the Rippaverse as a slow burn so it'll be a while before the canon is anywhere near the complexity that Marvel, DC's or even some Image stuff is. I'm going to wait to see how Bloodruth #1 and Isom #3 pan out before I say that I think Eric should step down from being EIC. Thanks for the comment.
Me too. Eric needs to greenlight Goodyng to be a 3 issue miniseries at least! I'll talk about this more on Braxcast as the fans get to read the book. Thanks for watching the review and liking it! I appreciate it greatly!
Man I think I had too high of expectations. I was a little let down with the framework of the story. Pacing was fine but I would’ve liked to have stakes earlier in the story. Still, a weaker Rippa book is still a good book.
I can see that perspective. This is an origin story so it begins with his childhood. The stakes are inherently low. I do think a 3 part mini series is in order for Goodyng.
"A lot of this worldbuilding is very subtle." LOL. If you mean "nonexistent", sure. Like, this book doesn't do *jack* to establish the true origin of Goodyng. In ISOM #2 he's a recluse operating outside of Florespark, personally fighting fires in Shadow Valley alongside his robot drones and robot dog. By the end of this book he's a world-renowned inventor and businessman with a high-dollar contract to replace Florespark's city services -- no mention of Shadow Valley whatsoever, no robots, no firefighting suit, nothing. There's a *whole book missing* here (and I have a theory why that is -- see my latest video "GOODYNG: A Study in Waste"). There's practically no character development -- Goodyng is the same person from childhood to adulthood and experiences no inner change. By the end of this book, my interest in the character was so drained I wished the book didn't exist.
Firstly thanks for watching my review. I appreciate it. To respond to your points with spoilers below: 1. When I say the worldbuilding is subtle that's what I mean. How Splatterpuss gets his powers, the first line of the book that mentions Colonel Rolph praising Bryan's Solari's Exceptionals sending the invaders packing, Ron Hodges trial, the existence of MadWire and Exavio Procurement all hint at a larger and more complicated world that's still being revealed to us. 2. This is an origin story as it starts at Cato's childhood and ends with the establishment of Goodyng Services. The book ends with a drone being used to put out fires and there are some pages dedicated to Goodyng building a bulletproof suit. If for it to be an origin story it had to establish Goodyng just before the events of Isom # 2 then I find that ridicolous. There's a clear gap of time between the end of this book and Isom #2 and the reader who's read both can infer that Goodyng Services had to change and evolve as it expanded the territory it serves and they become more experienced in providing emergency services. I do think Mike could have written a longer script to better establish this transition however as well as to develop the characters. 3. You've established yourself as someone who's extremely critical of the Rippaverse which is totally fine. You are biased against the Rippaverse and me as super fan leaves me in an opposite position. I don't think we'll agree and that's ok. You can still be great. I'd suggest focusing and reviewing the works of creators that you feel are doing justice to the medium of comics.
@@VelvetRoomPublishing 1) Ron Hodges' trial and acquisition of powers is just part of the story, not "worldbuilding" -- unless you're referring to the fact that we now know for certain that people can get powers via strange events (like Barry Allen getting sprayed by chemicals and lightning), which I suppose hasn't been established in the Rippaverse before, only assumed. But since "born with powers" and "acquires powers" are pretty much the only ways to have powers in any superhero universe, that's a pretty thin "worldbuild". Meanwhile, we already know from ISOM #2 and other materials that Bryan Solari was the hero of the War of Separation back when Goodyng was a kid, so only the name "Exceptionals" was introduced here -- and we still don't know whether that was a team name that became accepted as a generic term or a generic term from the start. Yes, two companies were introduced that show Projexus isn't the only game in town, but how is this "subtle" worldbuilding when the companies are integral to the story? I feel like you're the spider in "Charlotte's Web" writing "SUBTLE" over Rippaverse's porcine minimalism. 2) At best this is an incomplete origin story, as it doesn't tell the full tale of how Goodyng came to operate outside of Florespark, create his suit, create his robot dog and humanoid robots, etc., start a low-rent sub service, become an amateur sleuth, etc. If you have to rely on "the reader can infer", then the story wasn't told. I theorize that Mike Baron actually did write a longer script, and, demonstrating their complete lack of wisdom, the editors at Rippaverse decided to fluff up the first half of it and publish it as GOODYNG: THE POLYMATH. Whether Rippaverse objected to the second half's contents or just wanted to publish a smaller book due to financial concerns is unknown. The end product is an abysmal failure at developing an interesting character that spits out a bland "golden boy" who can do no wrong and suffers no ills, leaving the reader to literally ask, "Where's the story?" 3) I'm not "biased" against crap books. Crap books are crap books and deserve all the scorn they get -- this one most of all. There are Hallmark movies with more drama and pathos than this comic. What happened? Rippaverse is a reverse-golden-goose that eats gold and turns it into crap, that's what happened. I bet Mike Baron turned in a script that would've had readers sobbing in their seats and delivering a standing ovation, but the Rippaverse higher-ups couldn't fathom it and wouldn't risk it. @@VelvetRoomPublishing no problem but it's weird how you skip the obvious mistakes. When the characters are in class the teacher wrote her name on a projector screen and not the blackboard, the water fountains disappears in between panels, the lighting and shadows arent right depending on the source of the light on some panel. In the classroom there is empty shelves making the background feels empty, unrealistic and unappealing. The way Goodyng challenge the bully is far from heroic it feels more villainous more then anything. The world building is very weird. Why is the Lincoln memorial is randomly at a university in texas? Why the Vilian just suddenly get tattoos all over his body when a panel ago he didnt have any tattoos? Why do they re-use the wall jump from Isom 1 during the fight scene? Speaking of re-using you don't talk about the re-used panels. Some panels are the exact same. What is Goodyng motivations to become a hero? Speaking of the Goodyng services at the end of the comics his service is free a takes over the regular 911 calls. In every promotional videos they made about goodyng you can see that he is supposed to be a hero for hire 49.99 a month but i guess he isnt? Also this book is a shot but the ending is a hook hinting at a follow-up. Some plot point dosent go anywhere, someone is spying on goodyng in one panel but we never have a follow-up about this. This book is a mess. and I say this as fan of comics not a detractor or a hater of the rippaverse.
@@Galaktique What are you talking about? Why would the teacher use a blackboard when there is a laptop on her desk? This isn't set in the 80's as the kids have cellphones in class and projector screens are common in modern classrooms. Teachers can write their names on the screen using a mouse or stylus. The water fountains are behind characters in the panels you are talking about. When things are behind characters, they aren't visible. Would a blank wall have been more full to you? The shelves weren't completely empty as you can see a water bottle and a stack of books on top... a wall wouldn't have had anything on it. Defending yourself from a bully is villainous? Alternate world were the US is divided into 7 different countries, so maybe that is where the Lincoln memorial always was in the Rippaverse. The tattoos seem to be related to his powers and only show up when he is activating them, similar to how Yaira's hair starts to turn blue when she activates her ice powers. So, because Isom pushed off a wall with enough force to smash Santwan through a wall on the other end of the parking lot... no other character in any Rippavers book is allowed to jump off a wall ever again? Repeated panels is a technique used in many comics as it serves two purposes. First, it shows that the events are happening one right after the other, in the same location, or that something is a routine for the character. Cato sitting on his bed while reading in the exact same pose and panel before and after diner establishes that this is his usual routine. In the scene where Cato and Gina are in the library studying there are three repeated panels with very little differences to show that this isn't multiple occasions, but the same occasion. If it were a movie this would be a longer take to show the awkward tension, but a comic can't do that so repeated panels achieves the same effect. Second, it saves the illustrator time on drawing panels similar to how Anime often has scenes of characters standing and talking so that they only have to illustrate the different mouth movements will leaving the characters static. Finally some legitimate criticism! Goodyng is a Mary Sue with no real motivation. That is actually a problem with this book, but you want to try to nitpick over minutia and details that you are wrong about. Wrong again, Goodyng only offers extinguishing services for free to whatever county Florespark is in, but the advertisement are for Shadow Valley which is likely in another county. Also, the advertisements included medical response and criminal investigations while the the announcement in the Goodyng book is only for fire extinguishing. The book was announced as a one-shot solo comic for Goodyng, but his adventures can continue in other books and series. His villain might show up in completely different books that have nothing to do with Goodyng as well. Also, there is nothing stopping the Rippaverse from turning this into an entire series if there is enough demand for it. Dude, that was Dean Robbin, the Goodyng employee that was killed... he was selling Goodyng's secrets to what looks like someone that worked for Madwire. That all was handled in the same two pages, so no need for a follow-up elsewhere as that guy is dead. 1 legitimate criticism and 11 bs ones... yeah, sure you are a fan of comics and not just someone looking for any reason to hate the Rippaverse. I didn't like the book, but I am not out here lying about it like all you Toads like to do.
@@truthedministry Goodyng boobytrapped his shirt, injured the bully, and took a picture of it while giving a creepy smile. Seem's pretty villainous to me. He's supposed to be a super-genius and that's all he could come up with? Just because something is behind a person doesn't mean they are going to be completely obscured. And you would think a school room would have more books or supplies on the shelves. I don't remember too many mostly empty shelves in any of my classes. And no, it being the first day is not a valid excuse. The tattoos don't just appear when he uses his powers, they're just there. No rhyme or reason for them to be there. And honestly, they remind me of the tattoos worn by the Marvel character the Vanisher. The artist probably just stole them. The repeated panels just make the pages boring, and are really overused. And why does he have to save time? Its not like this is a monthly title and there are strict deadlines to meet. Maybe you didn't pay attention in history class, but Texas was on the other side of the Civil War. So there is no way they are going to have a memorial to the statue of the president they were trying to get away from. It was another 3-D asset plopped into the book due to laziness or incompetence. And if you want to try to use the alternate history excuse, then maybe Eric should ACTUALLY EXPLAIN THIS WORLD FOR ONCE! Defend this: why is the family in the beginning eating spaghetti in one panel and turkey in the very next? And it's very clearly two different meals. The art is copy and paste crap, and the writing is a joke. Goodyng and his villain are boring cardboard cutouts of actual characters. As for the editing, what editing? Its possible for a mistake or two to get past even am eagle eyed editor, but this thing is full of them!! I think Mike Baron even misspelled Goodyng repeatedly in his opening letter. I swear Rippaverse fans have a collective IQ between a mushy banana and a lump of coal.
@@truefanforum3273 That "boobytrap" wouldn't do anything unless someone punched him... Are you also going to claim that museums are villains for having security gates close around a room if someone steals one of their priceless exhibits? Stop trolling. Genius doesn't mean he is rich and has access to a bunch of materials. He did what he could with the materials he had. They are in those panels. The water fountains would have been completely behind the lockers and or people in those panels. What books or supplies? Everything is on a cellphone, tablet, or pc now. You also don't remember anything they taught in school, because you are a barely literate troll. Like I said, those weren't tattoos, they were related to his powers as they glowed red when his power was active. You insist that they were permanent tattoos, but then don't point out that he would have never been able to escape as the other guy brough some doctor's outfit for him to wear as a disguise, but he would have visible tattoos all over his face and arms making the disguise worthless. And how the hell does an artist steal tattoos off of someone that is invisible? Obvious troll is obvious. You are completely ignoring the first reason to use duplicated panels. There are strict deadlines to meet to get the books out rather than having them be 3+ years late. This is another world where the US is split into 7 different countries, human looking aliens exist on Earth and likely are the source of Norse, Greek, and Roman myths, and superpowered police squads operate out of giant flying fortresses... but TX fighting for the North rather than the South in that universe's history is a step too far for you? Hell demons and a blood witch that flies a dragon... perfectly reasonable, but Lincoln being honored in TX, "IMPOSSIBLE!!!" Those are some weird arbitrary rules you are enforcing on a fictional world you didn't create. Oh, while you are at it, make it impossible for there to be a city called Florespark, because that doesn't exist in the real world. Or go one step further and have these books only allowed to show things and people that exist in reality and/or actual history. Then we could watch the adventures of Cato Goodyng, the guy who works in an office at Google and never invents anything or ever fights crime. Learn to troll better. Trolls pretend to not understand world building. It's not two different meals. In the third panel you can see the turkey in the middle of the table along with noodle on the plates of the dad, son, and daughter. In the first panel on the second page, you can see the turkey in the middle and again, every visible plate has noodles on it. So, they are eating turkey as the main meat dish and instead of having mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese, they instead have spaghetti noodles with tomato sauce. You really suck at trolling. Agreed, Goodyng and the villain were boring 2 dimensional versions of characters done better elsewhere. Why don't you stick with those types of criticism instead of making up stupid crap that is wrong and/or idiotic. Oh, yeah he did misspell Goodyng repeatedly. It's difficult to spot that extra "i" if you aren't actively looking for it. But how does that translate to the people who enjoy these books being stupid? You're basically illiterate and obviously inbred, so I am not sure why you think you can criticize anyone else's intelligence. @@truthedministry Really, I don't like the Rippaverse and I'm a sock account? Personally, I think EVS is a big an asshat as asxEric. What I am is a real comic fan who see these comics as the trash they are. You guys' "logic" when it comes to people who don't like the Rippaverse is pathetic.
I talk about my review in the latest episode of Braxcast.
I talk about my review in the latest episode of Braxcast.
Your on a mission to hate and destroy lol wake up getting your load off to bash and destroy wow.
there is so many art mistakes in the books and the story is mid at best.
Thanks for watching the review and sharing your opinion.
I'm not a Rippaverse fan and I thought this book was pretty awful, but your "criticisms" are just pathetic.
