This video on the 2023 Bordeaux en primeur is an absolute gem! The depth and extent of your analysis and insights truly brings this vintage to life, giving us all the essentials we need to know - including grape-growing problems and weather challenges - plus an excellent set of sound and exciting recommendations in order to make informed decisions in buying 2023 Bordeaux wines. So thrilled to see some favorite and beloved producers on your list including Malartic-Lagraviere, Las Cases, and Clos du Marquis. This is definitely a must-watch for all Bordeaux fans and wine enthusiasts, whether collecting or just buying the 2023 vintage now or in the years ahead. I’ll surely try to get my hands on some of the wines you mentioned here. Thank you, John, for yet another outstanding, useful and helpful wine video. You’re the absolute best! Cheers!
Starting my Bordeaux journey with last year’s futures but this definitely gave a very good insight into 2023 and a name I didn’t even know about. Super excited. Great job!!
Many thanks for your insights on the ‘23 vintage. Our first grandchild was born in ‘23, so now begins the hunt for a wine to “put away” for her college graduation or other very special occasion.
Attorneysomm turned me on to wine auctions and other awesome things in the world of wine, and for everyone out there who loves great Bordeaux, Hart Davis Hart is going live with an incredible auction of fine burgundy and Bordeaux this Friday. It’s fun as heck and easy to sign up!
PRECIOUS !!! Many thanks John for taking the time and making the effort to share these tasty (and timely) insights. As I mentioned before, lucky for me... our palates seem to align perfectly... HENCE, am on my PC looking at some of these Futures offerings !!!
Excellent video John ! PC is an extremely good recomendation, my only problem is that it is a wine of very slow evolution and prime time could be 20 or 25 years into the future and thats a very long time to wait. Many of us do not wish to continue to wait for decades for our wines to evolve and be ready. Maybe 10 or 15 years, but not a quarter of a century !
Another great video John thank you for that. I love the way you go into depth and describe how the climate influenced the wine. Making this video not only informative but also educational. You have selected wines from different price ranges, great work there. Compliments!
Got my hands on a couple of Pontet Canet futures this year as well. They surely deliver year after year and I think it's going to be a good idea being a returning customer. Pontet are going to become a legendary wine house if they keep this up
Thank you! Agreed. They have been making very high quality wines for a number of years now. Definitely some of the best quality and still very reasonable pricing.
@@joeydecarlo2532 Agreed! The pricing wasn’t available last week when I recorded, but I agree that is a compelling price. Believe that it is their first vintage in the new winery as well.
Your research always is deep and crystal clear. Not also high priced wines are in your recommendation. As well wines with a far lower price performance are in. Thank you very much for your explanations. They are well known and profound as well. Greetings from Chile. It would be great if I could study with. Do you as well offering courses for example which can help preparation for a sommelier study? I observed that my sensoric capabilities lowered down. I want to strengthen them up again. I enjoy watching your videos but exists there any advice how I can train my sensoric capabilities? With the best wishes and kind regards ✌️
Thanks very much! Very glad you enjoy the videos! at this point, I have not had time to do any courses since it is hard for me to keep up with my schedule as is, but I will definitely give that some thought going forward! It definitely helped me finding a good group to taste with locally on a regular basis. We do blind tastings quite frequently.
Great video, we had some overlap in our wines to watch for the en primeur 2023 vintage. I had some wines on my list that i would love your input on. These are: chateau Cantemerle, Chateau Dalem, Chateau Branas Grand Poujeaux, Chateau Lynch-Moussas, Chateau Batailley. All of these received high praise while also having very affordable pricing.
Thank you! I have featured all of them except Branas Grand Poujeaux on this channel in the past. Those producers definitely do a good job and the prices are reasonable.
Thank you! Yes, unfortunately I didn't have much information about that one at the time of publishing. Since that time, however, I tasted with Pichon Lalande's winemaker. He thinks that it has a lot of similarities to the legendary 1982. The price is definitely right as well.
Great review as always! Prices for first growths are coming down! Did lafite and mouton impress you the most? What were your thoughts on Margaux and HB? Not as impressive? I’m definitely trying to get some FGs for the first time. Thank you!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I published this video before the HB and Margaux were released so I wasn't sure what the pricing would be and did not want to include all four First Growths that sell en-primeur in this video, so I went with Lafite and Mouton. HB is excellent too - potential 100 point scores from Decanter, Jane Anson and The Wine Independent for HB. And I see it for $424, which is pretty fair. Between the four, I would rank the Margaux 4th even though it is also stellar. That one sells for about $500.
@@AttorneySomm ahhh that makes sense. I might go with lafite just cos it is the most well known and possibly either mouton or HB just for a second one as the prices tend to be almost the same. Margaux is about 70-80 more but it could also be WOTV for left bank🤔
Good stuff, John. Unfortunately, I will pass on the 2023 for a number of reasons: anno domini, having just passed my 69th birthday; I have lots of claret from this recent fantastic run of vintages; '23 is, as you say, uneven; and it is not, so far as I can tell, an early maturing vintage. I might, however, buy a bottle or two or three of the 2016 Cantemerle, which I can pick up for £32 per bottle, which seems a decent price for such a year. I will probably open a 2014 Beaumont tomorrow to go with the roast lamb. It is drinking beautifully right now. Thanks, again.
I love how most wineries use “amphora” to show the relevance… great recommendations! again, prices of Bordeaux will further reduce, regardless of the future vintages.
Thanks very much! Several of the wines discussed in this video with potential 100 point scores are definitely among the wines of the vintage, along with Haut-Brion and Montrose.
Im not a sucker for the younger wines. im more into the ripened wines, with alot complexity. but the question was more about your opinion, on that speciffic wine and vintage.?
@@The1stHannibal-ex5fo I think it’s a solid effort that will be an enjoyable wine with more time. If it was my bottle I’d give it at least 5-7 more years.
I have not ordered from PGC yet. You might consider K&L, Hart Davis Hart or Millesima. Total wine also has a concierge email mailing list that sells many of them as well and which only requires 50% down with the rest due once you take delivery, which is a very nice option to have.
Great question. Normally in my videos I have tasted the vast majority of the wines. For this video, that is not the case. I was not able to make it to en primeur this year so I did the video based on research and prior experience with the producers. Hopefully it is still useful. Cheers!
From the critics that I follow(my preferences line up closely with their palate), Margaux, Pauillac & St Emilion(expensive Pomerols/1st & 2nd Growths) were the best areas. If I were starting a collection, 2023(and 2021, which received nice upgraded scores recently) is Really cheap, compared to back vintages of 2009-2022. As you said, "Strict Selection is Required", but this seems to be a "classic" Bordeaux vintage. They are not the blockbusters of the great vintages between 2009-2022. Similar to XLNT Sonoma Cabs vs Napa. If you're a Cal Cab drinker, St Emilion is the closest. Laroque, Sansonnet & Tour Saint Christophe should be less than $40. Pauillac is the most Classic smell & flavor. Batailley was 40% cheaper than the price of 2022($60+), at $35. The tastes of the different regions(appellations) are similar to Stags Leap vs St Helena vs Howell Mtn. Bordeaux is just more Cerebral. I'd wouldn't go nuts. 3-6 bottles of a couple of wines in each different appellation in your price range, and 3 bottles of 2021s, would suffice, starting in 7-10 years, & CORRECT storage!
Thank you for weighing in! Excellent thoughts. I definitely enjoy a number of the names you mention as well and have featured them in other videos. Definitely agree re pricing too. And I do enjoy more restrained vintages with higher acidity too.
My good sir! Please do the impossible and tell us what your favorite Bordeaux region is. I know, I know, probably several, for several different reasons. But, if you had to pick one with a gun to your head, which would it be? I will go first. Probably no surprise. Pauillac. But Pessac is a very tight second
