  • This video walks through a complete exterior door jamb replacement (not a repair) using a 4 9/16" jamb, along with a 2" extension kit. This includes routing out new hinge and strike plate insets.
See Part 2 also as I wrap up the installation with shimming and leveling out the jamb, followed by replacing the exterior door frame.
The tools used in this job include:
    • Fletcher Armour Wood N4916 Exterior Jamb Set
    • Masonite 6.56-in x 36-in x 80-ft Primed Door Casing Kit
    • HingeMate350 - door mortising kit
    • Dewalt miter saw
    • Dewalt drill set
    • Oscillating multi tool for smaller cuts
    • Circular saw
    • Router
    • Speed square
    • Chisel
    • Hammer
    • Tape measure
    • Crowbar
    • Level
    • Exterior screws in varying lengths (listed in video)
    • Shims
    • Exterior caulk
    • Exterior paint
    • Protective eyewear
I enjoy doing new projects and figuring it all out. Let me know in the comments your tips and experience with a door jamb replacement.
Best wishes and, remember, you can do it!

Engineering note for DYIers! The unthreaded shank of a screw is sized to fit the thickness of the top layer of what is being fastened. This is because having threads at the top actually weakens the fastening by holding the top and bottom pieces a fixed distance apart. In an ideal situation, the top piece is almost loose to the screw, and only the head of the screw is tightly pulling the top piece down onto the bottom piece like a heavy weight. Unfortunately we aren't professionals with a perfect screw specified for every situation, so we need to work around the fact that our screw shank is never right. To do this, pre-drill the hole in the top piece to be larger than the bottom piece, enough so that the screw is just a little loose. This freedom to move will allow the screw threads in the bottom piece to pull the top piece down very tightly. Now you know! Keep up the great videos.
