220 Citizens Live and Work in One Building In Alaska

- Imagine that you don’t have to spend hours in traffic jams on your way to the office. No need to be squeezed in a crowd of commuters at rush hour. To get to the supermarket, you don’t even have to go out. Just press a button in the elevator or walk down the stairs if you’re in an athletic mood. Sound like a miracle? In fact, there’s a town in Alaska whose citizens have everything they need under one roof. It’s Whittier, maybe the strangest town you’ve ever seen.
Whittier is situated on the coast of Prince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska. All of Whittier’s 220 citizens live in one building; a tower of condominiums. Citizens don’t only live in the same building, but go to work, school, and do their shopping by just pressing different buttons in the elevator. Well, actually there’s one guy, Paul, who thinks he’s special and lives in a camper nearby.

SUMMARY:
- Whittier is situated on the coast of Prince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska. It was named after the glacier nearby.
- All of Whittier’s 220 citizens live in one building; a tower of condominiums.
- The 14-story building is called Begich towers, and it has pretty much everything you need in life: a police station, 2 supermarkets, town offices, a covered playground, laundry, post office, and a clinic.
- Whittier is isolated from the rest of the world, and lives mostly off natural resources. Fishing is the main activity of the locals, and one of their main income generators.
- Although the climate is more moderate here than deeper in Alaska, thanks to the ocean, winters are very snowy, and summers are rainy.
- You might think that it’s a paradise for introverts, where you can get lost forever. But you’ll hardly find a more interactive and social town than Whittier.
- The town was founded in 1943, and the location was chosen not for its magnificent beauty, but for the natural isolation. The town was built as a defense facility for the US military.
- Several standard houses were built for the staff working in the harbor there, with very simple architecture. Buckner Building was constructed for Engineer Troops.
- The army changed its plans after March 27, 1964, when the Great Alaskan earthquake, also known as the Good Friday Earthquake, occurred.
- After that, the military forces left Whittier, but the people who’d worked in the harbor and other facilities, stayed. In 1969,
- Some Whittier citizens go to work in Anchorage, which is 65 miles (105 km) away. A two-way trip through the tunnel isn’t cheap - $15, and they must buy an annual pass for $500.
- There are 200 apartments in the Begich Towers, and half of them are empty now. Some people own an apartment, but live in a different place, like Anchorage.

I am obsessed with Whittier Alaska
I used to live there and not everyone lives in one building and some people work in shops
Whitter has grown a fair bit since this video.
They have some new businesses outside the towers.
I think it could be a very neat place to stay for vacation, or even move to if you like Alaska.
You are about an hour drive from a big city, but you are in a beautiful area with tons of outdoor recreation.
You can take some occasional trips to Anchorage for "city" things.
Moving there from southern Indiana.
Yes
If there is ever an apocalyptic event that affects the whole world this place will probably barely even be affected... This lifestyle would be great for someone like me
The tunnel changes direction every 30 minutes, not 15. I also worked on a cruise ship and we would have overnights in port. I remember more sunny days than overcast.
For me life like this is better, maybe in the future we live like this,
I want to live here.
Wow It's like real welcome to the wayne exist
Too bad everything costs so much there I would be packing and ready to go.
Imagine if they made a duplicate building
I lived in Alaska before, up in Prudhoe Bay. Whittier sounds like heaven compared to there. And, for the elderly and disabled it would be perfect since everything is in one place.
Jannice G oh true
wonder what medical would be like there. would internet access be slow or expensive?
Yea
WHATS THE COST OF LIVING IN WHITTER SINCE EVERYTHING IS IN ONE BUILDING
It's only weird if you haven't lived there, which I did for two years after high school. Great memories of the characters and stunning beauty that made it like no place else on earth.
I work on a cruise ship that went there. There are other houses, and two bars which are great, they only close for an hour. Great place and I liked my time there.
geza96 how long have you worked there for?
Nice! Sure seens like a nice place to visit. Wish i can before the population thins out.
I live in Whittier and what you said was different from what it actually is. We give you space, its easy to live here, we are not isolated, our covered play ground is barely used because we have a playground outside, we chose to live here, etc. next time do more research.

Staying somewhere like that place no one can read you love leave a private life.
Have once work on a Vessel with 550 onboard at the middle of sea for 2years plus where everything you need is free, you are not buying not selling.

@@kishuroffixial3891 hahaha well, that's not my whole life story 😏🤷♀️
Valdez is pronounced Val-deeez. Also this is a true to life city, I've had to deliver phone books back in the day to this town. It is a very beautiful area
Yes, and it's not "big-ich". The b-e-g part of the word has more of a long "A" sound. Not quite "bay-gich", but close.
You know Valdez is a Spanish name? Should be pronounced as such. The same with Begich, Slavic last name
I used to have a recurrent dream that I lived in a building like this. Only it was far larger, with more people and facilities. And it wasn't a cold place either.
I really love your channel!😍😍

I love brighterside
It’s local common knowledge here in alaska yet here i am watching lol
Would you want to live there Bright Side? I would visit but don’t think that I could live there. It looks beautiful. Great video.
I wonder how people live in Alaska. Chilling cold man!
Your body gets used to the cold after a time... its amazing what the human body can do.... 2 years of living there and 30 degrees will feel like summer temperature to u... not saying u will like it, but u will definately adapt
This would drive me crazy😫
Bright Side to Me it Sounds like a Very Cool, Cozy and Relaxed Place to Live & Work in. It’s almost like Dorm Living for Families/Adults. And 0% Traffic⁉️ Are You kidding Me⁉️ That’s simply a Dream Come True. The only thing that sucks is the weather, but who cares❓When You have EVERYTHING You could possibly want or need for under one roof❗️ Might be a Nice idea for other Congested Cities.
This might also be a nice idea for Communities that are located in Small Cities (such as Fayetteville, GA ) where the vast Majority of the Population of People living in these Communities Mainly Work for Companies such as Caterpillar, Delta, Coke, etc.
Thanks
Adri 🕊
Imagine they lack internet in the building & you have your WiFi with no password and everybody connects !!!?

Brian McCaleb awesome!
If it makes people lives well, why not? Good living life arrangement.
Come to think of it, space scientists that study other planets, space cities and mothership space travel might find it good to study the people and colony of Whittier to get important and life enabling information to help in designing “life in space”.
As soon as I saw the title pop up I knew it was about whitter
