    This actually looks like a really good charger adapter. I too wish that they had just met certifications and got it certified for use in the US. Especially, since Japan uses the same plugs that the US does, it would have just made sense you know? Overall, a quality charger, that barely misses the mark. And like you said, could have reached it, if they had actually bothered to comply. I too don't understand this philosophy of, get rid of the PFC in the new models, and make a crappier charger adapter as a result business.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace

      If my videos do anything hopefully they can help some engineers push for better devices and win the corporate argument (obviously need a much bigger market share before that happens, I am still a complete beginner at the video thing). This one is so close! You are correct it does look like a good adapter, probably a clone of the Hyphen-X 100W multiport adapter. I don't want to tear the Hyphen-X down though because I use that one, I think this one is going to get the tear down treatment though. It looks ultrasonically welded shut too, time to get some power tools out.

      @@AllThingsOnePlace Hi, this is the SlimQ team. Just run into your video, nice one and helpful. To clarify, this 100W charger was released and shipped to market in early 2020 on Indiegogo, way before anyone else. It is probably still the smallest (even 2-3mm smaller) with a PFC function and 4 ports (some of the smaller ones on the market actually cut corners and removed the PFC function). Also want to point out that that charger does not do a reset when the device connects or disconnects from the charger. This is a unique feature among all the 100W chargers on the market. We expect others will catch up soon.

    Bought one of these recently with the additional extension cord and the travel adapter pack. Used it maybe 2-3 times and then it stopped working. Now it appears to be dead and won't charge anything. Contacted support, they asked me to film a video showcasing the problem - and now I'm waiting to see what the next steps are. @@AllThingsOnePlace This is exactly the reason. All our chargers have certified lab conducted tests according to ETL 62368-1 standard and pass. However, getting a full ETL certificate would require 10 times more money and a much longer time. FYI, one quick procedure to verify is to give it 90V input (need an AC source) and measure the external temperature. By standard, the external temperature on the case (the hottest spot) should be under 77 degrees celsius (room temperature 25 degrees celsius) after running full load for at least 2-3 hours.

      The hyphen-X is a bit older but it's not a bad adapter. The slimQ is a bit more compact and performance wise is good, I need to tear one of these down to see what's going on inside. In my testing the slimQ did not perform amazing at leakage current (the tingling feeling with a metal body laptop while plugged in), I haven't tested the hyphen-X yet. It is a spot where apple and anker do very well.

    I saw you recommending minix but not slimq as the best travel adaptors in another video. What is the reason behind? Slimq has a PFC function and does not do a reset when the device connects or disconnects, shouldn't this be a better option than minix?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  Год назад +2

      No safety listing. Every, I mean every, power adapter I have torn down that didn't have it cut corners. SlimQ does respond on those comments though and it looks like they do try but can't afford a safety listing I guess, if they can't afford to list a mains connected product what else can't they afford? Some argue for some against. There are certainly parts of a safety listing that are just forcing people to check boxes which isn't fair but there are some very valuable portions, like creepage, clearance, temperature, connectors, materials, etc. The minix is a clone, there are a lot of brands that make that same adapter, so it also has volume on it's side. Not an independent trying something different... The power supply technology is better in slimQ.

    I'm curious about the NEMA connectors that lack holes, they clearly don't sit in the wall sockets as well and when you have something heavy like this, they tend to sag out of the socket. Is there a specific requirement for the holes? It seems like this had the holes on the actual product, but not in the packaging pictures.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 года назад +1

      I have a few of the connectors around without the holes. I don't think the standard requires them but it looks like there's lots of references to why they were added historically. In terms of how this adapter holds in the socket, if it's a new electrical socket it will be fine, older worn in sockets aren't going to hold these heavier adapters, holes or no holes. Some of the long form power adapters that stick out really far from the wall only make this worse. I haven't done any of them on the channel but I will have to make a point of showing that.

    • @LGNilsson
      @LGNilsson 2 года назад

      @@AllThingsOnePlace I grew up with the Schuko standard and now live in a country that uses NEMA type sockets and to this day, I'm amazed I haven't zapped myself a long time ago when I unplug things. Can you recheck your SlimQ 100W 2C2A (model F100). I have newer model F110 (3C1A, C1/C2/C3 support max 100W) and I meet problem (error) with this (All three C ports). When I plugin a device (power bank/laptop/cellphone etc.) with over 65W input and plugin another device with over 65W input (maybe over 45W input). The charger does not reset like SlimQ's advertisement and complete shutdown (does not reallocated power for each port). After that, I have to disconnect the charger form power supply (and reconnect) to help it working again. SlimQ cannot explain why, they just answer my devices is reason 😅 But my devices charging normally with many other different charger (even with 65W charger). I am concerned about portability (due to the travel), but am also worried about safety (is the SlimQ not having a US Safety rating, while having one for the Japanese market, a major concern for safety? (I am not based out of the US)).

      SlimQ has stated they do all the testing and meets the requirements but basically doesn't want to pay for the safety listing... I have a hard time believing that though. I don't think they are bad chargers though I haven't really done any extended testing on these. The Satechi charger isn't bad and having inter-changeable AC leads is nice, I like those since you can bring the one you need and it is the safest way to swap cables (no sketchy travel adapters, etc.).
