A little advise, I'd strip the paint, then use some type of rust converter to get rid of the rust. You left a lot of rust under the body filler, which will pop off, especially if it's used. It looked like a rough casting, I wouldn't have used filler. I'd used a wire wheel, put the primer on thick, wet sanded and used a hammered paint finish.
Aubrey Evans How refreshing to read such a comment as advice rather than the usual 'put downs'. They read like the commenter just wants to massage their own ego, where yours reads like like a genuine attempt to help. They not only help the person in the video but other newbies as well.
Legend has it she was once made of metal lol. There were a few seconds there I thought he was gonna put body filler on the anvil, but alas he did not. I have a breathe of relief. 😎
This is what I do occasionally to the vise I have on a post outside of my garage. Clean it, lube and paint. I may try the body filler next time because the pits in the steel tend to hold moisture and rusts. Nothing fancy in the paint and its good to go back to work.
Thank you for putting this video on RUclips. I'm not sure about the filler..... As others have said. A number of other techniques I found very helpful. I am currently restoring a Record No4. Good luck with your future projects. Subscribed 🙂
Nice paint Job. My question is when does cleaning and painting ( maintenance) become restoration? In this case , it seams a little lubrication would have made the vise function normally. What, then is restoration? To my mind , restoration involves more than cosmetic changes. So again nice paint job.
Hi, nice job. Was wondering what you use to remove rust. I kinda get the feeling its not the most eco-friendly, but seems to work well. Thanks for sharing.
He is using acid. He needs to learn more about how to use it. Water first then chemical. His method is dangerous. Can blow back in the face. He does a ok job with what he has.
Good resto; I hope that was epoxy bondo. Nice color. Good for another umpteen years. Here's my scale of determining how much resto an item needs: if someone needs to drop it on the ground and pressure wash it just to see what it is and if it can be saved, total restoration or frisbee it into a dumpster. 2) If a little de-rusting and oil can put it back in use, that's a minor resto and will show lots of wear. 3) A good resto will look and work like new with very faint signs of use or age. 4) A perfect restoration will exceed the factory's intent in appearance and function. Overkill, but great for the hobbyist. I'm not criticizing you, but have you noticed that some restoration shows use tools that need to be restored? Yuk. Keep up the great work!
So he only likes comment if its saying good job?, @Antiques restoration do you think you will get any better just by listening to these people?. Why don't you respond to some of the ones you don't like that are telling you the truth, because i agree with a lot of them and that's not even going into what looks like shaky iphone cam footage...
Looks like a good job to me, I would never have thought to use filler to enhance the finnish, but i will now. Thanks, Tony, Australia. Lets see some examples of work from the anonymous critics.
Yes I agree he doesn't even have that many views he can't be pulling in that much money it is definitely a turnoff to a lot of people I enjoy these kind of the years and I stopped watching it not even halfway through just because of the stupid ads
You can do what you think looks best. On a newish vice, like this, it doesnt really matter. On a nicer vice I would leave all original casting marks and wouldn't even paint it. Unpainted cast iron is best rubbed with linseed oil and left. All just my opinion though!
Paint is ok but I’d do oil or better yet gunblue first. Wouldn’t use bondo, not designed for abuse. The black hardware and anvil... gunblue for sure. Looks great like a good patina and protects from corrosion
It's easier to grind everything smooth so you see no rust 7.06-9.50 (you left rust spots) because you will eventually have rust problems later on, this is coming from machining experience this saves time and it is easier as you can then do light sanding. If you dont want to grind too much material off then make sure you see bare metal before putting filler and also grind at more an higher angle so its cleaner good video otherwise.
Yeah, bad restoration is better than no restoration, but dude, seriously. If you aren't gonna even get the right tools to do a proper job to begin with then do us all a favor and don't bother. Bondo, on a vise? Really, and no primer?
Okay, I will be the one to tell you straight-out, you made what I would call a half-assed attempt at restoring the vice and nothing more. The avatar name that you have chosen, "The Scrap Restorer" only fits particially your work, that part being "Scrap"

Body filler has no place on a vice! In my opinion, you just made another restoration job to undo the work you did. It's a vice not a car or other such thin sheet metal product.
you guys were right, he did use a grinding disc on that poor vice....jeez.........and omg he did use body filler on it .......too painful to watch......
I’ve never seen anyone remove the dynamic jaw like that... smacking it with a hammer to drive out the whole thing instead of unthreading the lead screw... Worst idea ever. I stopped there and looked and comments I’m glad I didn’t continue. Fair attempt at content but so many ads and such a poor job. This is a great how not to video.
I bought one like this for restoration a while back. It is super cheap cheap Chinese junk. I refinished the unit but the third time I used it the screw anchor broke in half. It is not even good scrap.

This is a nice video... it taught me a lotnof things like.... how to restore a vise in a wrong way..... thanks a lot....
18:05 with the looks of that hammer maybe that should be your next restoration..wow
Holy wow

Yep - remove the rust and old paint, paint with Hammerite - not the machined areas, lube up, and off you go!
Nice clean up and a beautiful restoration.
THANK YOU!
If you add less of part b of the bondo it will spread smoother. It take a few minutes longer to dry so you have more work time. Looks good. 👍 👍
VERY NICE........
Decided to not make a mean comment. because you worked so hard on this.
Way too many ads.
Way too many kids..
Ads? What ads?
I agree - too many ads. Is the publisher of the video responsible for the number of ads?

Wow, ten commercial breaks in a twenty minute video! Feels like I'm watching network television. Still you did a nice job restoring the vice.
Ralph Reinhardt get a paid subscription on RUclips and they will be gone ... not a problem of this channel but yours alone
Nice job, but I don't understand why you use body filler on a rough casting.
I was not satisfying to directly paint without body filler.
I'm kind of a rookie but it seems like a small sand blasting machine might've been faster and done a more thorough job of removing the paint and rust.

🤩
Very good restoration job 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍

Vice + body filler... bad idea

I have used record vices for years in the energy sector an they have been abused over the years bondo an a big hammer = paint on the floor
he had to use all that bondo ,cause that is the worst casting i've ever seen
You left half of it rusty. Worse restoration I have seen. Looks as smooth as a ploughed field.
So, let’s see some of yours.
@@phreffable Screw you. I dont video my restorations. I dont do them to put on here and con people out of their money. Ass hole
@@ianallen2 That’s probably because you can’t read the video instructions. Learn to fucking spell you dunce!

A grinder and bondo??? RUINED a good vise.
Can't watch this, to many ads
good job
THANKS!
I voted down because there are not enough pop up ads in this vid. Please include more next time

What this project needs is... Gorilla Construction Adhesive Ultimate! That, or a new WIX website.
Todo salió bien.. el tornillo, te quedó bonito. pero que pasó con el martillo. esta reparado con pinches clavos.!!
Doesn't that body filler need a hardener???
No,it doesn't need a hardner.
Preparation is key, shame not enough done
Bondo I wouldn’t do, but at least he’s working not watching...

Color of used paint is beautiful. Rest is a pity. Very bad restoration.
Doesn't matter how much bondo you put on a turd it's still a turd...and that is a steamer...

Hi,
nice outside, but ugly inside!
(in German: “Außen hui, innen pfui!“) You have not removed the rust inside!😣
Like my ex girlfriend!
What kind of liquid did u use for rust removal?
way too many ads - seriously how are we supposed to watch the video with that many ads? Terrible.
Bare C on this one. Painting the screw, handle and jaw faces is just not advisable even if this is now a display for a fantasy workshop.
Is this a comedy restoration? I never laughed so hard.

You rushed a lot of it. Take your time. No wonder it came out the way it did.
I stopped watching when the grinder appeared. I knew then that this was a kindergarten level restoration!
LOL. WTF. A grinder to clean a vise. Use wire wheel

What chemical did you wash it off with?
My first thumbs down, the video and the ATTEMPTED restoration was very bad!
Use a rust converter then JB-Weld ! Mush more professional than what you did to that vise !

Какая модель Bosch ?
Obviously fake, a meticulous restorer won't have a hammer such as that one 18:10
Another vise restoration: ruclips.net/video/_FlLKNiaEFg/видео.html
Don`t use your jaws as an anvil never, that is why they have a flat area behind his body to hammer things
Смысл? Это китайские тиски за 25 долларов. Нормальная краска дороже. Пластилиновые.

Bondo on a vise?

To many adds. Do you own a wire wheel? BONDO are you trying to make best of show. I guess you are not going to use this wise???
It is in my daily use you can watch it in my recent videos.
Bondo isn't a good idea It's a casting, not a milled face. You will end up with a nice vise (not vice)!
How's it's spelt (and pronounced) depends on where you're from. Over here it's vice!
Что за раствор ты использовал для снятие ржавчины??
Концентрированная кислота HCl.
30% соляная кислота.Я в других видео видел надпись на бутылке.
Desculpe, mas como dizemos aqui no Brasil, "serviço porco"!

Dude.
And get rid of the stupid yellow dish gloves. They blocked the camera view.
Bad surface prep. That's 90% of the job. Rethink the body filler on such a rough casting next time.
Seriously are you afraid to get your hands dirty?
Be helpful if you learned to spell right. Body ‘filer’ is a whole different thing to body filler.
How to destroy a vice using aggressive power tools an slapping sum paint on isn't a restoration and bondo
Can't trust a guy that doesn't use WD40
That vice was doomed the day it was made. Shit steel.

Absolute shame and very misleading to others who have zero resto experience. Especially those looking for help.
What's with the rubber gloves? Afraid to get your hands dirty?
