April 17, 1967-Password (Carol Burnett-Alan King) (Restored)

  • -When Password was cancelled by CBS in 1967, Goodson-Todman Productions created a package of episodes for syndicated repeats that consisted of color daytime shows from 1966-67 and color night shows from 1967. This meant editing the original color videotapes down for syndication and in the case of the color night shows a lot of editing was done to bring the time down (though no game play was edited).
    -To get a sense of how much was edited for syndication, I have combined a color night show from April 14, 1967 with Carol Burnett and Alan King as it aired on GSN in its syndicated version with a low quality uncut B/W kinescope and when you see a shift from color to B/W you'll be able to see what was cut and what decisions were made to get things down to a tighter running time. This usually meant cutting out the contestant interviews but it's pretty obvious why they left the third one in!

    Hahaha, the way "grimy underwear" came back to help Grant win the game was hilarious! Carol Burnett and Alan King were such animated Password players, and with a great sense of humour, too... it's no wonder they were fan favourites!

    It was hilarious when Carol turned to Allen during the lightening round and started to ask him "what do you think". Great ep!

    Alan King is one of my favorite Password celebrities. He’s not only one of the best, he’s a riot.

    I'd say it might've been just about 10 years after this that the audience would have chuckled at the word "Vibrate" (possibly especially when the clue giver gave the clue "Machine" :-) This was just a little before that time in the Industrial Revolution :-)

    They really made tight cuts. Looks like they cut wherever they could.

      These 67 night shows suffered more in the editing process for syndication than the daytime shows. You had several minutes more of episode content than the daytime shows did.

      Would have restored that but my poor kinescope (I think I got it in the mid-90s) cut out before the end.

    Yes, I see why they left the third segment alone. She's a caterer? Jeepers!

    Did GT tape AND kinescope Password?

    I think with Sable, although of course usually rhyming clues backfire, after maybe three clues, maybe said as a very extreme question (in an exaggerated way as those two actors can certainly do), "Table ??…"

    The ads are very reminiscent of the mid-1960s.

    Were the original tapes cut up for editing, or do they exist somewhere?

      Adam Nedeff says a lot of the Daytime show exists, including the original versions of the 1966-1967 Color episodes (albeit in B&W). Apparently, the color primetime CBS episodes were cut up for Syndication.

    it goes black and white then to color

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  3 года назад +3

      That's explained above in the description. The B/W parts do not exist on the color videotape version and this is the only way to restore the program to its original full-length.
