  • In today's video, I used the sewing pattern Simplicity 1356. It’s an adorable reversible dress pattern with a tie front. You can design this differently in many ways. I chose a vintage floral rayon challis as my main fabric and the blush dot challis as my secondary, or peek-a-boo fabric if you will.
I love the results! Would I use this pattern again? Yes! I would use this pattern again, but I would not use the Challis fabric. I love that the fabric is flowy; it looks beautiful, but it was too much for me. I think it would be very difficult for a beginner sewer to use this type of fabric.
I liked that there were only three sewing pattern pieces in the pattern. It was pretty strange to be asked to cut crosswise since my fabric texture was running the opposite way, but it worked out, and I actually don’t mind it.
Beyond the required sewing pattern pieces, it requires 4 18” ribbons.
The instructions were easy to follow, but I can see a total beginner having some issues. The instructions were okay for someone with basic knowledge of sewing, but they could be improved. For being made in 2014, it felt a little old school.
I changed a few things on the pattern and sewing, such as changing the length of the sewing pattern by 4 inches to fit my short legs. I’m 5’4”.
I sewed the front tie my way. My way was more manageable and looked less bulky. I also changed how I sewed the shoulders to test my hand-sewing skills. I think I did just fine. With more practice, it will definitely look more professional.
Ultimately, I enjoyed sewing this dress and can wear it to family outings or the grocery store. If you feel cute, it can be an everyday dress. Depending on the fabric chosen, you can even turn it into a formal dress.
What do I feel the Cons are?
    1. I didn’t realize that the front part of the dress would also have a tie in the back.
2 Let’s hope I won't have to wear this on a super windy day!
3 It is not super beginner-friendly; the instructions are not for a total beginner.
    What are the Pros?
1 This dress is cute and can offer many different looks with your fabric choice.
2 Has only three sewing patterns.
3 Very quick sew after the first try.
4 It’s reversible. Get two dresses in one. Win, Win!
I hope you enjoyed watching this video and liked the dress's results. Please give me a like and comment your thoughts to help my new channel. ❤️
I mostly post videos on Sundays, I hope to see you back! Thanks for watching!
    🪴Always, Michelle

Thank you so much! Check out the pros and cons in the video description. If you’re a beginner make sure the fabric is more structured. I love my results but I did struggle a bit with the challis fabric. I’d love for you to share your results. Hugs! 🥰

Thank you! Yes, it was easy to make. I made this dress in a couple of hours. The fabric choice I made was a little tricky for me. It was my first time using rayon challis. I was wishing I used something more structured at first. In the end, with patience, it all worked out. LOL!

I'm currently making this dress using this pattern, your tutorial is by far the most informative and easiest to follow! Thank you, thank you for posting this video! I'm self taught with no one helping me so I utube the patterns that I have as I like to sew the retro/vintage style patterns. Would you consider doing a tutorial using Simplicity 9449 or McCall's 7354? I was starting these and got stumped 🤔 Thanks again for posting this video!

Thank you so much! 🥰 I'm so happy I can help. I'll have to look into the other patterns you mentioned. I'll let you know if I drop a video on the making of those dresses. They are pretty cute! I wish you luck and the confidence to complete the Simplicity 1356 sewing project. I know you can do it! Please share your finished project if you like. I'd love to see it! Take care. -Michelle

I am just making this for my Grandaughter for a wedding . She is a D cup bra size do you think the ease in this will be alright or will I have to adjust for the cup size ? I'll be grading it from a 16 to a 14. Any ideas would be helpful . It is so cute I have a lovely piece of tie dye poplin lightweight I'm using

This sewing pattern does not share the finished measurements. From what I've gathered from using it, it looks as though there are at least 4 inches of ease per size in the bust area. For this sewing pattern, my measurements are exactly size 16. I used the size 12 pattern, and it fit me perfectly, as seen in this video. It looks as though this pattern fits a Size B, but I could be wrong. You may want to make a toile to ensure a size fits your granddaughter's bust and possibly size up the bust area and merge the lower half with another size. Hopefully, my measurement was a good example how the sizing is with this pattern. Good luck, I hope this helps. One more thing. The way the dress comes together with the ties underneath, she can tighten or loosen it to her liking.

Thank you for those ideas. I'm excited to make it. I'm an experienced sewist so like you sometimes I do my own methods.

I made this pattern recently. It looks great in the model. I’m a very experienced seamstress. I honestly don’t do lots of patterns because I make my own. I thought this one would be a fun afternoon project. WRONG! It was not. I had to do so much adjusting and tailoring to make it work for me. I had to put darts in the back of the dress to keep it from looking like a flower sack on my body. I had to readjust the location of the tie under the bust so it hit me in the right spot. It was far from simple. After much frustration I got it to look decent but I would not recommend this pattern for a beginner. I think the fabric choice is important. It needs very flowy fabric, not always easy to use for a beginner as well.

Hi, Audra. Thank you! I'm sorry that this pattern didn't work out for you. Usually, commercial sewing patterns end up fitting weirdly for me. Luckily, this one didn't. However, I'd like to know if sizing down helped my situation, as the pattern had a bit of fit-ease. The flowy fabric looks great, but I agree it would be a challenge to work with at first. I'm a newbie at making my sewing patterns and am always pushing myself. I prefer this and Indie patterns over commercial sewing patterns any day. I'd love to see the sewing patterns you make. Do you sell them?

Weird question - you said you made a size 12. If you had chosen a size based on your measurements and the back of envelope, what size did it think you are? I have this pattern. I've been putting off sewing it because I know it has too much ease for me.

Hi there. It's not a weird question at all. Comparing my actual measurements to the back of the envelope, I'm a Size 16. The bust, waist, and hips on envelope are exactly my measurements right now. Simplicity always runs so big on me with the addition ease. As you can see, the size 12 was an exact fit for me. I'm short at 5'4". I also had to chop 4 inches off to fit me how I wanted. Hope this helps. I'd love for you to share your results. Good Luck! Hugs! 🥰

Also 5’4. I’ve almost given up on Simplicity because the end results are always so big on me.

@@pixieunger1855 Yesssss! I get it. I had the same problem, too. Most of the time I find my size by comparing my measurements to the finished garment measurements instead. Those can be found on the back of the envelope, or sometimes on the bodice pattern piece. If not, I'll measure the pattern pieces to find the right size or fit I want. I hope this helps. ❤
