You know, if the Ruger and PSA magazines are that close, one could likely machine a second mag catch slot and have a truly interchagebale magazine. Might be a nice product for a quality aftermarket mag company - one product line that covers two niches.
I’ve got the same low tier psa 5.7 and have treated it the exact same way with the exact same results. This is by far the most fun gun I own, well aside from the 9mm 1911. I think it would be even more fun with a red dot or a threaded barrel. The only people I’ve met that didn’t like it are the ones who haven’t shot it yet. If your a big recoil person, it’s not for you but if you like loud bangs and tight groups and easy shoot ability with a Glock feel, what a blast, get one.
you should still oil it though. I mean a car can still drive without an oil change, but if you DO change the oil. (preventive maintenance) it will last longer. but you do what you want, it's yours not mine
@@southern_merican absolutely agree. I ran 1000 rounds without doing anything other than initially cleaning and oiling when brand new. It was for me, a personal test out of curiosity to see how it would perform. I’m happy to say, not a single issue when clean and new to dirty and dry. Cleaning it for the first time, I was pretty shocked to see that it wasn’t as dirty as I thought it would be. Now it’s on the over cleaning and oiling schedule like the rest of the fleet. My only slight regret is not getting a red dot slide as I think it would super fun.
@@PaladinOfTexas I can imagine. At a pretty quick trigger pace at around 10 yards I was shooting better groups with the 5.7 than slow focused shooting with my Glock. A Red dot would be hard to not constantly mag dump the thing.

Some things to consider between the Rock and MP :) 1. SW MP57 has the smallest trigger guard. I found with shooting gloves it’s not easy to get your finger in there 2. MP57 mags have the least internal space of all variants and some reports of feeding issues reported 3. MP57 threaded barrel has 5.56 length threads and in some cases without using a spacer would cause baffle strikes in 22 cans 4. MP57’s action/barrel is causing a loss of measurable velocity over other 5.7 guns 5. I’d argue the Rock has better grip ergos over the wood block like MP57 grip. 6. The MP is the softest recoiling 5.7 gun I’ve shot I’ll still contend with my ranking list FN Fiveseven and Rock on top, SW and Ruger on the bottom :)
The M&P grip should be considered a warcrime under the Geneva conventions as they pertain to torture...even if it is self-inflicted by buying and/or using something with an M&P grip. Any information out there about _how much_ velocity (on average) is lost by the M&P 57 vs the competition ?

I picked up a “blem” PSA RK1 a few weeks back for $400. The RK1 is a Rock with slide lightening cuts, an optic cut, and threaded barrel. When you buy the whole gun, it comes with 2 mags and a nice nylon pistol case. I really like the gun. The trigger is a bit heavy for my tastes, but not unbearable by any means… just fees like a slightly heavier Glock trigger. As for the “blem,” I cannot for the life of me find any imperfections, which seems to be a trend with many guns sold as blems. Anyways, I too am very impressed by the Rock/RK1 guns. I am fortunate that I could have bought the Ruger, S&W, or FN, but it seems that the PSA consistently gets positive reviews (often better than the competition) and is only a fraction of the cost of the others. I am not implying that the others are bad guys, but for me, nothing in the other guns warranted the higher premium. That said, to each their own and I won’t fault anyone who goes a different route.
Theory is that PSA does this to move inventory. And get capital. They're ever expanding. Annexing other companies. AAC? Yeah. The Honey Badger come to mine? The H&R repros. And Nodak Spud. Once they unveil the suppressor lines, and legal teams, I get a feeling we'll either see 400$ total investment cans, or, the legal might to crush the NFA. At least one company is hitting back. And PSA would be wise to join them
I honestly believe PSA sells otherwise normal stock as "blems" occasionally just for deals. My GF3 AK from them was a blem and like you, I couldn't find one thing wrong with it.
I bought a Colt blem upper from Brownelles a couple of years ago, it turns out the blem was a small spot with an uneven finish on the inside of the upper, so it’s possible it’s just got a bad spot on the finish somewhere not normally visible
Quick PSA (see what I did there) on Palmetto. More people need to realize that their stuff is inexpensive, not cheap. PSA makes and sells their stuff directly, saving themselves (and by extension, the customer) money by cutting distributors out of the game. A $500 PSA AR is roughly the same quality as a ~$750-800 S&W or Ruger. I'm not claiming they're the best manufacturer on the planet or that any budget build PSA is gonna beat out a Daniel Defense or w/e, but they're seriously slept on because people don't understand their business model.
My first EDC and best EDC, I don't care if it's the cheapest 5.7 on the market. Holds 23+1 and has never jammed on me ever, and the trigger is soooooo crisp. Definitely a must buy for those who want a 5.7 but without breaking the bank. Personally, I like the astheic of the gun more than the other 5.7s available currently.
How is the trigger pull weight? Heavy or easy to shoot. If i saw correctly on James's video, it was 8 pounds. If it is 8 pounds, then i wonder if there is an aftermarket trigger?
@warblerblue personally, i have big hands, so the trigger pull is perfect for me. The thing is you don't feel how heavy the trigger pull is because the grip is more slanted behind the gun, so as your trigger finger is pulling, the palm of your shooting hand is being supported by the grip, therefore the trigger pull feels short and light. However if you are a fan of hair triggers on your pistols, I'd say you won't need it. If you have a good trigger finger, then don't worry about. Trigger pull is light because the trigger safety is at a very low angle where it is at the tip of trigger finger and the distance it takes to fully pull back is about 6cm with about a 4-5lb pull. I also have an optic on it (Vortex Venom 6 MOA) and let me tell you, when sighted in properly, and having the right shooter, it can have a very far engagement distance, personally I have only tested it out to 30 yards max, and the results are phenomenal with a very tight grouping and it will land exactly where you point. If you have any more questions or want to see a video answering your questions, let me know. I hope I was able to give you a good breakdown.
@@DuckGod9000 Thank you for your detailed reply. Im going to consider all your points as I think about getting one from PSA. You said the pull is 4-5 lbs which is the same as my glock after market trigger. Light enough for me and I have used it in competitions. So if the trigger pull on the Rock 5.7 is 4-5 lbs yes i would like it. Also, the Rock to me The Rock is shaped like a PSA Dagger/ Glock so I see what you mean abou the angle. Very useable for me.
@warblerblue I have a dagger as well and personally not a fan of the factory trigger but it does the job for being 9mm, and trust me the recoil shown on screen does not do the gun justice on how flat shooting it feels.
@ahuckingfappyduck Man you are spot on with the Rock, tbh this was my First pistol I've owned.. maybe 3rd ever shot. I also have big ass hands and the trigger pull is not bad at all. Since it was the complete model I did get optic cut slide and threaded barrel, was considering getting a vortex red dot as well.
PSA is huge. Their customer service and warranty is great. They're making guns for every man and with their prices, you can arm your neighborhood and rely on those weapons. I bought a PSA dagger from them directly, had an issue with my lower and had it resolved quickly.
Great review and I’m glad you finally started referring to the gun as inexpensive rather then cheap, as cheap refers to quality and this gun is a quality gun, especially for the $$. I have been a 5.7 owner since 2008 and love shooting my PSA 5.7 far more then my FN. It’s like shooting a P90 then shooting an AR57. Sure the FN gets all the hype but the fun factor and versatility of the AR57 platform is ingenious. Plus how can you argue with the $$$$.
I can't speak for the other 5.7 pistols but there IS 7 round mag extension available for the Rock. And for the price difference, I'd say the Rock has a "better" trigger than the competition.
This was incredible. I felt it derive from the usual flow. And the knife reference hit perfectly. I’m a knife nerd and was appalled at the reference. I’m always impressed when someone knows about the sebenza period, but to put it into context and use it as a comparison - now you’re speaking my language. Knives and guns are easy references for me. I hope that Hop wished you a Happy Father’s Day.
That's funny, because mentioning the Sebenza as a high-end, expensive but worth it piece of hardware made me gag. Have you ever seen the Cold Steel video with the Sebenza? It collapsed like a wet noodle before they even began the test proper. Shocked, the tester thought that must've been some kind of fluke, so they spent another million dollars or however much that p.o.s. cost, and the second one did the same thing. It may be pretty, but it's not as strong as a gas station knife.
You should really do a little digging into the PSA website. The fact is you can get the threaded barrel with all the bells and whistles for less than you stated. The only reason it gets up to 600 is with the Holosun sight it comes with. You can literally get ANY color combo with a threaded barrel/standard barrel, basic slide/slide with all kinda of cuts, normal sights/suppressor sights, optic plate/no optic plate........ all for about 450. Can't beat that. Very surprised to hear someone say they aren't a fan of PSA. I have 4 AR-15's and a AR-10 that ALL shoot wonderfully I personally built from PSA. Options for days is what PSA gives you with out overcharging the shit out of you. Ohh and btw thats the full price not on sale. The shear amount of deals that PSA is pumping out weekly is impressive. Or the Blem option to save a few bucks.
More like the 5.7 penetrator. Bought my Psa 5.7 recently and I’m never switching to 9 or 10 mm again. Shot mine with over a 100 rounds and not a problem, accuracy better than 9 or 45. Up to 180 yard accurate. And close up can easily put rapid fire at 50 yard with amazing precision, the only problem I have is this is a long barrel and does not conceal carry well.
I have a PSA Rock with the 5.2" threaded barrel. I conceal carry mine, and I've brought it to competition. I love it, it's my favorite handgun. 5.7 is the future of handgun technology. Also, something not brought up in the video, the PSA slide goes into battery if you firmly insert a loaded magazine, which is a nice feature.
@@DkGaston the "power factor" is heavily dependent on bullet weight. Not even 55gr .223 meets the power factor. You can still compete in local unsanctioned competitions and be ranked however.
@@CAAStudios That's crazy about .223! I might just do that to get some experience with M+P 57. I've never done any competition yet so unlikely for ranks to matter anyway. If I get good and care later I can get a race 9mm.
It's not a Rock nor is it a 1000 round torture test, but I took my brand spanking new Dagger out to the range today and my buddy and I put 200 rounds of pretty cheap 9 through it without a break and it didn't skip a beat. No FTFs, FTEs, stovepipes, nothing. Used both Glock and Magpul mags without issue. Consistent and accurate the entire time. This is a pistol that came with an RMR cut, slide cuts, stainless barrel, and a green Viridian laser with a gray cerakote for $320 out the door. Literally half what my friend paid for his Gen 5 G19 for a pistol with more features. I'm very satisfied. Another win for PSA in my eyes.
My experience with psa has been great. Got a rock/ar combo, for $950 to my hands with tax, shipping and transfer fees. I have a few hundred rounds through each, and they run perfectly. I really enjoy the rock with a 407k on in. Great for carrying around the farm.
When your biggest complaint is that PSA isn't charging enough to make you feel good about its quality you need to question your objectivity. Too bad the reviews can't happen BEFORE the MSRP is known.
Anyone shooting 5.7 should avoid American Eagle, they don't use a crimp on their cases but instead they glue the projectile in place. Check reviews, only 5.7 ammo that sucks.
Wow! Super impressive… has my wheels turning… Been wanting to invest in a 5.7 carbine and pistol but haven’t made the move yet… Wanted to wait for popularity to increase so ammo would go down… Nice review! As usual… 👍🤘👏
Dependable inexpensive firearms are becoming more common, and they are not all 9mm or 380 as was normal in the past. I was not personally interested in the 5.7, due to the price of ammo mainly, before seeing this video. I may have to reconsider that preconception now. PSA has really stepped up their game recently and I am impressed with their efforts.
Took the fam (wife 2 sons) out to shoot the .44 Henry X, and the Ruger 57 with Viper red dot. Shot the 57 at 25 yards and everyone got consistent bull's-eye. They really enjoyed shooting the 57. 4 people shooting 44 mag and 57 is an expensive range day
If it works it works doesn't matter the price. Not all budget friendly items are junk and the Rock seemed to reinforce that idea. I think that if someone is really struggling financially, but is hell bent on purchasing a 5.7 pistol this is where the Rock truly shines because as you demonstrated it performed above expectation and let's face it most people are not going to torture test their only defense weapon in such a manner. Thanks for sharing.
You don't need to be "really struggling financially" to not want to buy a more expensive gun if a less expensive gun fills the same need. I recently bought a Rock. I haven't received it yet. The one I bought has a threaded barrel, elevated cowitness suppressor-friendly sights, and an optics cut. I paid $400. I nearly bought a used FN Mk III at a local gun store for $1000. The reasons I bought the Rock instead are: 1) I can't decide which version of the FN to get, as a collector. I personally think the Mk II looks more distinctive, but most people seem to prefer the Mk III. And in general, I am not sure the FN pistols will hold their value as well now that there are cheaper alternatives. I am a gun collector with ~60 guns and when I buy a gun, one thing I consider is if it will lose value, hold value or gain value. I may not always guess correctly, but with the FN, I did not feel like I was able to really guess at all. 2) I am not planning to use 5.7 for defense or for competitive shooting. If I did plan to use it one of those ways, I would want the gun with the best shooting characteristics, which in my opinion right now would be the Smith. Since I do not, I decided that the reviews of the PSA are good enough that there is no need to pay 150% plus as much to get the Smith just to try out the cartridge. I gave serious consideration of all three, and while price was a factor, it was not based on being "really struggling financially" but a more longterm view of value. Everybody will have different factors. If anybody is "really struggling financially," I would not recommend buying any gun, unless necessary for personal protection. JMO.
I had my doubts, but got one when they had a crazy deal that was 50 off, PLUS a holosun 507. I ran it pretty hard, well as hard as money would allow anyway. I was impressed. Its in the carry rotation.
As a casual gun enthusiast I LOVE PSA, they are a great company with a clear and positive mission. They make the best guns they can with the lowest price to get as many guns to the people as they can. The r&d they have done in the past 2-3 is astonishing. The dagger, rock, JAKL, and their other offerings are all amazing.
I ordered one of the higher end optic ready models after seeing this review. I wanted to get into 5.7 but didn’t want to go all in so this was the way to go for me. I’m not disappointed.
I'm so glad you made this video! I wanted a 5.7 for a while now, but I was wanting something more budget-friendly. So glad to hear PSA is selling these for so cheap!
For me, I would really like the S&W 5.7, but I am still on the wait for reasonable ammo fence. I realize some offerings are less expensive than a year or so ago, but imo, still way to expensive to turn into a regular range / plinking tool. Also, to carry with sure defensive rounds...they are just too expensive. Maybe one day.
Really loved how you rocked the igneous references! I am very pleased to see the rock solid performance of this gun. Now that I am moving to a free state, two months to go... It is on the list. Wanted a 5.7 but not for any other reason than just to have one. This fits.
Put an optic on the psa 5.7 recently and went to the range. It was very accurate, felt like I was a video game protagonist due to how in control i was. I love this gun and I would argue if you prioritize the accuracy over recoil than this is probably the best 5.7 pistol currently on the market.
@@BeingFireRetardant The 2070 average is the fps in the 5.2 inch variant of the rock, if it was a 16 inch barrel it would be faster due to burning more of the un-burnt powder. The round I'm referring to that i use is the black dragon fang and its a doozy, the viper weapons testing (2016-2017) was an interesting read as well.
I’ve owned my 5.7 rock for almost a year now and it’s been amazing. Never once have I had an issue with it and I’ve shot nearly 800+ rounds through it and it’s always my fav. I have a $2k comp pistol and I find myself back at the rock
The ergos on the Rock are crazy, I have tiny hands and this full frame feels great in my hands. The gas operated S&W has less kick, but a glock clone in 5.7 for waaaaay less is where I went, the Rock.
watched this coming out of a tornado warning in OK, same day it released....i bet my red ruby slippers are not as nice as James' though, I can only afford the PSA version....
I just wish an enterprising company like PSA would provide a barrel chambered in .22 TCM to make this pistol that much more utilitarian. .22 TCM is much easier to reload casings for than 5.7 FN. Having more options is always better!
"It would be easier if we shilled for fun manufacturers, but we just won't do it" _Huge lightning bolt crashes down in the background - boom!_ Now THAT'S making a point!
Sigh. I know. ETA: I would probably spend the extra 3 hundo and get the S&W but that's because I'm a snob. Seems like there's nothing wrong with this one at all.
Agree. Bought the S&W, screwed on a Dead Air mask, mounted a Holosun EPS carry and not regretting it at all. Awesome trigger, no recoil, hearing safe even w supers, no booster assembly, runs flawlessly….. best pistol purchase I’ve ever made. Every person that has shot it loves it
PSA is its own thing. Gorgeous, accessible, Working man guns. Beautiful new golden era of a fully closed manufacturing loop. Perhaps not your first choice if you're running ops, but beautiful choices for toys, and reliable enough to aid the working man in potection. And then maybe you save up for that wilson combat... or maybe you buy 5 more guns from PSA. New Golden Era of firearms.
I personally would much rather have 5 custom PSA builds than one Wilson Combat/Daniel Defense/whatever overrated "premium" weapon that is clearly priced 2-3x what it should be.
I feel like a $350 pistol to shoot 5.7 is like buying a well used 1991 Honda Civic to only run premium gas in in it. Good review. Next time I want to buy an affordable pistol then take out the equivalent of a student loan for ammo I’ll look into it.
Great stuff!!! And with Excess Arms offering a 7 round magazine extension you really have something. A rifle/pistol combo? Maybe a bullpup? All with 30 round mags? Take my money!
Besides all the bad puns I’m surprised psa has been stepping it up, not many places could do a $350 5.7 that would live through 1k rounds no cleaning or lube. Don’t think I’ve even ran more then 1k rounds through my $1200 fn 5.7.
PSA Rock has impressed me, I've got at least 500 through mine now. I'd say stick to the threaded barrel options and 40gr projectiles, not for any reliability reasons, but the performance consistency. The 27gr projectiles have a different POI and the extra like 0.5" of barrel for the threaded can add 100 fps. Don't put too heavy of an optic or muzzle device on it since it will cause issues, like if you use the RMR adapter to adapt to a 509T or use an AR-15 combloc style flash hider, it's going to have cycling issues.
I've had my relatively cheap Zero Tolerance 0450 for three years now. Still rock solid lock up, and still works. I couldn't get myself to buy a Kershaw, even though its the same company. I however would rather buy a Rock over the M&P, even though the M&P is the BMW to the Kia RIo to the Rock.
5.7 is great in a sub gun because you have the automatic fire and accuracy together in a package that can punch armor. 10mm is better for a pistol where more kinetic energy makes the best use of limited capacity and accuracy.
Why 10mm instead of 357 Sig? Both have about the same energy, but the 357 Sig usually has higher sectional density for deeper penetration and the ammo is lighter weight.
@@MrLoobu Cost of what? The ammo or the gun? I'm not 100% sure, but premium ammo costs are probably the same. 10mm is more popular so 10mm range ammo might be a little cheaper. As far as handgun costs there are some expensive handguns in both calibers. When you look at something like a Glock the prices aren't very different. Because 10mm is more popular there are more offerings from different manufacturers in 10mm than 357 Sig and there's also more hard cast lead ammo offerings in 10mm for bear defense than there are hard cast lead offerings in 357 Sig. The main point I was trying to make was if muzzle energy, hard barrier penetration AND ammo/gun carry weight are important you might want to also look at 357 Sig. If having more options to choose from for manufacturers and likely easier to find ammo in local stores is more important and ammo/gun carry weight is not as important then 10mm is probably a better choice.

You know, if the Ruger and PSA magazines are that close, one could likely machine a second mag catch slot and have a truly interchagebale magazine. Might be a nice product for a quality aftermarket mag company - one product line that covers two niches.
Similar to the way Ruger sr9 and M&P 9 mags are the same except for the mag catch hole...
big brain move right here
Would be a plus for the ruger as the PSA mags hold more rounds, no point in going the other way.
93r mags need a cut to fit the Canik TP9.
So when are the +20 mag extensions coming?

Some things to consider between the Rock and MP :)
1. SW MP57 has the smallest trigger guard. I found with shooting gloves it’s not easy to get your finger in there
2. MP57 mags have the least internal space of all variants and some reports of feeding issues reported
3. MP57 threaded barrel has 5.56 length threads and in some cases without using a spacer would cause baffle strikes in 22 cans
4. MP57’s action/barrel is causing a loss of measurable velocity over other 5.7 guns
5. I’d argue the Rock has better grip ergos over the wood block like MP57 grip.
6. The MP is the softest recoiling 5.7 gun I’ve shot
I’ll still contend with my ranking list FN Fiveseven and Rock on top, SW and Ruger on the bottom :)

I bought a Colt blem upper from Brownelles a couple of years ago, it turns out the blem was a small spot with an uneven finish on the inside of the upper, so it’s possible it’s just got a bad spot on the finish somewhere not normally visible
couldn't find a blem on my GF5 AK from them either
@@stevem4783 my ak and rock were blems and same
Quick PSA (see what I did there) on Palmetto.

Love my PSAK-104, PSAK-V are my favorite shooters. Love the company PSA has become. I feel a old sense of nostalgic "American Pride" for this company.

Chris Reeve, Rick Hinderer, and Mick Strider are certainly on the Mount Rushmore of the production knife world.

I was wondering if 5.7 would be kosher for typical handgun competition
@@DkGaston yes, but if it's idpa or uspsa you won't be ranked. 5.7 doesn't meet their bogus power factor requirement.

Can confirm, it's trash
I had no issues with it. Not till PSA start selling in retail stores in my liberal state, federal it’s the only thing I could afford for 5.7
I have never had issues with it but I have seen repeated complaints about it online so the complaint seems legit.

JMO.
My 5.7 Rock is the same way. Had 2 failures to feed first round of shooting then flawless for hundreds of rounds after.
I had my doubts, but got one when they had a crazy deal that was 50 off, PLUS a holosun 507. I ran it pretty hard, well as hard as money would allow anyway. I was impressed. Its in the carry rotation.

Put an optic on the psa 5.7 recently and went to the range. It was very accurate, felt like I was a video game protagonist due to how in control i was. I love this gun and I would argue if you prioritize the accuracy over recoil than this is probably the best 5.7 pistol currently on the market.

@@Prepare2Survive Might be a better option then, what's the cost?
