  • This 1987 blast from the past features Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.(barely). Belushi takes on the unenviable role as a principal trying to clean up a drug infested High School. You know it's the 80's when you see Junior from Platoon in a small role as one of the gang members. Naturlich, Siskel and Ebert give opposing thumbs with Ebert buying into Belushi's role, in principal.. and Siskel thumbing his thumb and nose at all the graphic violence.

    It was probably Belushi's best film.

      I completely agree. I never have seen such a criminally underrated movie.
      I truly wish Belushi played more of these kind of moral compass movies were great for him.

      It has more comedy and a lot darker. That ending scared me in the shower and when they threw the kid threw the skylight. It was bad ass when he came on the motorcycle and beat the shit out of the drug dealers and their suppliers. Yes that scene were he rescued Rae Dawn Chong was like the Lone Ranger.

    Gene mentions Blackboard Jungle. I think it's a hybrid between that film and Class of 1984.

    That’s exactly what they
    Need today “The Principal”
    These kids are totally out
    Of control...look at
    How many school shootings..
    They would be stopped
    At the Door..😂

    Have to agree with Gene on this one. I admit I enjoyed the movie but objectively, it's incredibly stupid and pointless relative to real life.

    • @charles1203
      @charles1203 Год назад +2

      It’s a damn movie not based on a true story like, Lean On Me was. In real life he couldn’t do the stuff he did in the movie like beat the shit out of Victor Dunkan or white Zack.

    I really disliked that attack scene against Rae Dawn Chong. It was really uncomfortable. I don't think the film was impactful when I was little watching it as a family. Lol! Imagine the whole family watching The Principal! I've warmed up to it more over the years. It's cheesey 80's fun.

      Gene called it violent. I rented this when it first came out on home video. I spent my high school years working at BridgePort Video, so I had access to everything. I didn't find it excessively violent at all! Now "RoboCop (1987)" of the same year was a slightly different level of violence.

      @@landonbenford8369 Yeah, Robocop was way over the top. But in a fun cartoonish violence. I guess it, at the time, The Principle could have been construed as a "message white savior" film, but in reality it's a gritty violent urban thriller set in a high school.
