In case anyone is interested there are some very nice ethnic basils out there you can grow that are highly resistant. I grew Akoko Mesa basil from Ghana this year and it was unscathed from a plague of mildew that hit our other plants. Also there is Mrihani basil from Zanzibar that is quite nice, this one was actually used in breeding Rutgers lines of resistant sweet basils. I highly recommend giving Akoko Mesa and Mrihani basil a try for culinary basils. For a pollinating basil you can always grow Temperate Tulsi which is immune to the disease. I currently am using this one in my own breeding projects to create new and unique pollinator friendly basils.
All the basil (Thai and sweet) in raised beds got hit with this. The basil in the grow bag, not as much. There was no issue when the temps were in the 90s-100s. It’s only when the temps finally came down to mid 80s that the plants were impacted.
I just planted basil and it's turning purple only after a few days in the ground. I'm wondering if it's too cold. We've been in the mid 30's here in Chicago. I tried a bit of epsom salt and fish fertilizer but it's getting worse. Please help.
I think the cold causes phosphorus to be locked up in the soil which may cause purpling. On another note, avoid frequently watering basil, they like to get dry between watering unlike many other vegetables (especially the brassicas which actually like wet feet). Sign of over watering: yellowing leaves.
I have had an issue with when I pick basil leaves they look fine, but when I washed them off they developed brown patches just like this. Is it possible that the damage was there and just not visible until the water sort of soaked into the damage and made it show up? I have also had this trouble with lemon balm. I used some for a foot bath and it turned black! I wasn't sure what to think!
We have tia basil. The leaves are turning a light cream color and some have have died off. It's been very humid here. Could this be something other than downy?
I have my first batch of Prospera F1 DMR Basil germinating, and i'm excited to see how it does. Thank God for the folks at Rutgers. UPDATE: See replies below.
@@vargonian I posted a review on amazon (i'm "Darby" there). I'm disappointed. Ive got about 12 plants about a foot tall ATM. 1) The DM resistance seems to be only intermediate, not the strong I was hoping for. It's only F1, so that's to be expected. 2) My #1 complaint however is WEAK FLAVOR ... so weak i may rip half my plants out and grow sonething else in my limited planter space. Whatever they crossed genovese with to add DMR to prospera wiped out 70%+ of the flavor. Theyre gonna need to cross some flavor back in, because id only give it a C, at best, on flavor, and id feel generous doing so. There are other DMR strains out there to try ... the prospera needs at least an F2, cuz F1 is wimpy.
@@vargonian As far as I can tell, a LOT of research nursery/seedsellers are busy bangin away, creating lots of different crosses, hoping to score big if something turns up with strong multi-strain resistance that also retains a good level of flavor from a classic and popular variety like genovese ... then they can register it as a proprietary strain and cash in. It's a race. Rutgers has several, cornell has several, JohnnySeeds has several, and there are plenty of others to try. As of this past fall, when I planted mine, the field was still very narrow on choices ... narrower than now. Let me know if you find a good tasting one.
So here it is a year later, and (as predicted) it seems like EVERY seed vendor under the sun is now listing their own house versions of the Prospera DMR Basil ... but i'm still waiting to see which, if any, have managed to breed some decent flavor back in. Anyone have any results to share ?
i'm from guatemala and like 3/4 of my basil died and right now is rain season :( so i will save the seeds until it ends raining like in october, thank you for the information i didn't know what was happening.
Prevention: avoid overwatering, basil likes to dry between waterings, avoid wetting leaves, avoid planting in humid temperatures, plant in full sun. Correction: Spray neem oil if you start seeing.
@@janani5480 Hey 👋 unfortunately you may have liked your basil plants but that’s ok. First you can try revive it by trimming it almost to the base of the plant, then give it a good deep water and leave it in the full sun for a week or two and check back. In the mean time you could also start some new back up basil plants from seed either in plugs or in the soil directly if it’s warm enough. If you prefer you could buy new basil seedlings from a plant nursery too which will save you time. In any case, let me know what you want to do. Let me know how you’re growing (in sunken, raised or level beds? In containers? What’s the soil type ? Sandy? Clay?) Why did you spray the plants in the first place? Please give me as much detail as you can do that I can help you best. Good luck, don’t be sad about it because it took me years and years and so many failed attempts before I got there and even now I’m still a beginner
@@agdayem I planted this plant years ago in container with red soil .. then from last Dec it grow healthyly. I pulled out the plants. The leaves were yellow, brown and even had black areas. Maybe it was dome other disease. Now I'm wondering if the soil has the fungus in it too. Does it?
This may be root rot which is caused from too frequent watering. Basil plants like to have their soil dry between waterings. Also try to avoid wetting leaves
No you can try fix it by removing diseased leaves and it may regrow normally. But you do want to solve the problem that caused the disease usually too frequent watering, too high humidity, wet leaves.
I'm getting it year after year after year now. Can't grow basil. This time I'm trying resistant cultivars, I see some leaves turning black but the plants are still growing for now
I brought home a what I thought was a beautiful Thai Basil from a nursery near my house, the next day I looked under my leaves and saw the dreaded grey spores and soon after my whole basil garden was infected. I’ll never buy plants from a nursery again. Only home grown for me.

I would say if it’s hot weather, needs more water. But when my basil goes a yellow colour I add epsom salt to the base and water it in and that helps
What causes holes in basil leaves and how to treat them? Thank you.

Im from indonesia . For peronospora you can use metalaxyl+ mancozeb, or mandipropamid. Thanks
If you live in a rainy area I suggest setting up a plastic caterpillar tunnel to avoid rain on leaves. Basil hate wet leavd
Hi i m from India can i get the exact final solution for downy mildew which can end that fungi
You can use metalaxyl + mancozep. Another fungicide is mandipropamid.

Will neem oil help?
Hi did you get the solution on downy mildew
Yes
I pulled out the plants. The leaves were yellow, brown and even had black areas. Maybe it was dome other disease. Now I'm wondering if the soil has the fungus in it too. Does it?
Yes it's everywhere including the air
This may be root rot which is caused from too frequent watering. Basil plants like to have their soil dry between waterings. Also try to avoid wetting leaves
So once you notice Downy Mildew, should you throw out the entire basil plant? 🌱
My same question
I don’t know how it would work on basil but I was told a peroxide mix can help with mould problems on plants. Maybe google it?
No you can try fix it by removing diseased leaves and it may regrow normally.
But you do want to solve the problem that caused the disease usually too frequent watering, too high humidity, wet leaves.

Water less frequently they like to dry between waterings, avoid humidity, avoid wetting leaves.
It's like a yeast infection for plants😕
Is it harmful if enjested
Fulsarium can be for some people
I just ate some today that may have this... UGH!
@Rickie McNicolls Well only the stems are brown so even I didn't notice it right away and ate a few leaves as they look normal. :-/
