    Great to see this. Thank you for the extra effort to get it filmed! Just included it as part of my erg workout, albeit, with you at 35SR(?) I didn't keep pace. Next time maybe slow down a bit for your older viewers?

      This older viewer just slows down the playback speed ;) Nice consistent race, Cam, pacing is tough with everything going on. Good job!

      I don’t think I’ll slow down mid race so that people can hold the rate outside of it 😅

    Brilliant effort Cam against top class world scullers - did trying to keep off that Empacher mess much with your race plan? I assume the time penalty was for buoy infringement - a 180 degree buoyed corner in a single at full Yam - that’s tough.
    I on the other hand ‘attempted’ a 5K ergo time improvement - the wheels totally fell off on that one - back to the drawing board! 😎

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  3 месяца назад +2

      I reckon it gave me a good push on!
      He also took a wider town round Anderson so I was happy to take it sharp.
      5k erg is all about pacing. I find it super hard to get right

    Most young folks refuse to wear mirrors. Never mind that they help one row a shorter course but they prevent buoy violations. I refused to use one until I entered my 50's. After I easily improved my HOCR time buy 15 seconds I couldn't help but wonder what times I could have gotten in my younger years when I was stronger and fitter.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  3 месяца назад

      I don’t refuse. I just don’t have one and don’t need one normally. The buoy I hit too was out of place so shouldn’t have cut it but yes if I had the mirror I probably would have seen that!

    • @andyobrienAOBSS
      @andyobrienAOBSS 3 месяца назад +1

      @@CameronBuchan The buoys were put out on a windy day and many of the buoys moved out of alignment. Additionally buoy placement under the bridges changed from other years making Eliot bridge more difficult to navigate.
      Mirrors take a lot of practice mastering them. By showing you what's ahead of you mirrors give you a peak into where you want to be in the future but are terrible at telling you where you are in the moment. On winding bodies of water like the Charles you will find novice mirror users crossing into the wrong side of the river or bumping into shore because they are busy looking at point a 100 meters ahead of their present location. You still need to turn your head to check out where you are in the moment.
      Using mirrors on buoyed head races can lead to sensory overload. On sharp turns you will focus on your bow ball so that you can row riggers over buoys. But if you do that too long you will forget to look further ahead for the ideal occasion to pull away from the buoys for the next opposite turn. You will also want to take your attention away from the mirror to look at the competition starting behind you.
      So one can certainly make a strong case for not using mirrors. But as someone who made the switch I recommend using the mirror intelligently and somewhat sparingly during a row. It can save you from buoy violations and crashes. A number of inexpensive ones can be purchased on Amazon. It would make for an interesting video series to watch someone master a mirror.

      That particular buoy appeared to have been dragged out of position, after being snagged on some earlier boat.

    • @CameronBuchan

      I did end up with a 5 second penalty which I think is a bit unfortunate since it wasn’t in line but then again the rules are the rules! Wasn’t far enough up ranking anyway for a position drop to make a big deal!

    I only rowed 8 man sweep for about a year in college so skulling is totally foreign to me. Is it normal to have one hand bury that deeply on a skull? obviously one hand has to go over the other on your pull but it looked like your left arm was burying a little deeper every few strokes? turning style? just balance of the boat with only 2 oars? genuinely curious.
