      In case you dont place travelling microscope totally vertical or if the rings are not perfectly circular and similarly other orientation related problems could happen

    Okk but why we are taking difference to calculate the diameter ....is that actually mean that we are measuring the thickness of ring & i am confused in tabulation a little bit... because its different in our college manual

      Yes you calculate the diameter first but going across the center to calculate diameter is errorful so we use a modified formula of difference of square of diameters

      It is something you know because from center you avoid a few rings and then you note dpwn the placement of every 5th ring after that. Same you do on the other side and finally calculate the diameter of the ring.

      First circle is quite big n dark.. So start with 4th or 5th circle. After that lines look a littlebit parallel.

    Why don't we measure wavelength using only one diameter that is lambda = (square of Nth ring Diameter) divided by (4 N R) ?

      Measuring the difference is less errorful. Some systematic errors camcel out in this process.

      Use nob to shift microscope and then the reading is like ypu read vernier caliper.

      Sir we do two expirment in my college one newton's ring another one optical air wedge... In newton's rings the postures don't have vernier scale.

      The reading of travelling microscope is like reading vernier caliper. For air wedge you get straight fringes not rings and from their distance find the angle of inclination and finally the thickness of the paper.

      This is a ring and we take the difference between the left and the right ring position to get its diameter. The only way to get its diameter.

    Why don't we take 1 st/2 ND ring in data calculation

      It is infact to minimize errors. The diameter of single ring can also be used to measure wavelength but we use another formula of taking the square of diameters and then their difference. Just to minimize the errors because of the center.

      7:40 n is the diameter of any ring while m is 5 if you take another diameter of n + 5 th ring in this formula...

    There is one question ,
    In newton's ring experiment if a drop of liquid is placed in between glass plate and lens than what will be the effect on WAVELENGTH of light ?
