1hr video? That’s a Christmas present! Thank you Nigel!
Looking forward to the future of this tree I hope you have a wonderful new year for you and your family🎉
Looking good Nigel! Hehe a great strategy to stay young! keep calling it your 60th Birthday Scots Pine for the next 10 years, you effectively stay 60 and everyone wishes you happy birthday every time you work on it!
Very exciting to see you handle the "birthday tree" and guess it gives you certain extra responsibility to take care of it 😊
Personally, I am a bit bugged with that central "bundle" of dead twigs as it takes all focus when I am looking at your tree.
Always a risk that it would not look natural if removing it totally, but then again..it could be argued that the current does not look "natural" I probably would have taken some or whole off in some way. To be continued and usually you got it Nigel! 😉
I think the eyesore is the thick stub below the bundle! ✌️
Fantastic work on your birthday pine Nigel! Dave is right - you will remain 60 forever working on this tree! 🤣😂🐦💙
A nice winter wonderland by you. Shoveling is a real back breaker. Have you tried WD 40 on the tracks? Might give some lubrication for easy opening of the doors. Just a thought.
Nigel! The tokoname drumpot you got your Apple tree in hade been perfect for this pine! All the dead wood the elements on the tree and bumps hade match good to this tree. And the size is perfect?
Did you see some new growth to it afther the trick you did with the soil? I did the same to 3 pines i bought from nursery last year and i stil have not seen new growth to it. I replaced the "muck" with akadam, pumice, lava mix.
I love the view of the tree at 42:29, would you consider making that the front?
It's interesting to see the comments about the "explosion" of deadwood being a distraction and unnatural... As if Ray grafted all of those on there. Lol
It's as if the word "natural" has lost it's meaning.
"i don't like this branch. *chopping it off* it's a beautiful branch.." 😄
Good decision on removing that upper thick branch. I might have removed it completely. I'd consider timing point 50:42 or 50:47 as a possible front. I appreciate the natural look as well. Good work Nigel!
Agree on that for the front...
Interns, surgery in glass greenhouse with Dr. Saunders. Please bring notebook and pencil. Surgical pruning of Scots Pine. Tea or coffee is allowed while observing the surgical skills of the good doctor.
🤣😂
Been looking forward to you continuing work on this tree 👍
I really love how you explain your thoughts on how to decide on things you do to your bonsai. Looking at several options and what not. Easier to understand why you do things. Hope to enjoy your videos for a long time. Watch almost every episode, sometimes even bing it. Love this tree! (it's Bart Stellink by the way, changed name for a channel I am soon starting and Bob has been my nickname for decades)
Happy Bday Nigel! Mine is the 28th! :)
I heard a judge say : "one willing to , do the job, take a punch, keep on walking, that is the the definition of a real man." i think this is you Mr Saunders.
Thanks for putting so much work and effort into sharing.
Love from Norway.
Nigel, If this tree could talk I imagine it would be saying "thank you" for starting its journey to becoming a beautiful bonsai. Excellent work on this pine.
I'm enjoying your explanations of each cut. And I'm noticing that our concepts of where the aesthetics lay in the tree are in line. I often catch myself predicting your cuts with a pretty good bit of accuracy. I've attempted Bonsai in my youth but never with as much research and patience as I have this go round. Keep the videos coming.
Nigel it is always a pleasure watching your videos, always pick up nuggets. Question for you, what exactly is this rubber cement cut paste? Is it just regular rubber cement?
Nigel, my humble opinion for the front is the main feature of the tree-the deadwood. At 36:26 that the best looking face. Another great rambling.
Nice bonsai.. i like uwa bonsai.. Wari good video.. res pekt❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👌👌
Interesting tree. Scots Pines have no idea of the conventions of bonsai... That great spurt of dead stuff on the current rhs is distracting and needs to be resolved. Then again, it's a Scots Pine and stuff happens.
Happy birthday Nigel 🤗
Hi Nigel, I have some Himalayan cedar seeds and was wondering if you’re interested in some.
Hi Nigel, I have some Himalayan cedar seeds and was wondering if you’re interested in some.
Mr Saunders, I expected a bonsai enthusiast to have finely pruned trees on their property.
I vote for a no front tree. A round pot is the way to go, or maybe a pentagon or crszy exagonal😉
Happy Birthday!
Best regards beautiful snow covered the pine trees
What's your postal address please Nigel?
Nigel please do a bonsai from dogwood.
Your clip and grow = my directional pruning... a technique I learned watching the late Brian Batchelder in mid 80s... 👍🏾
The pine is looking much better with that higher thick branch removed. Hope your holidays were good!
Happy Birthday hope my little Bonsai/ pre Bonsais survive sadly i have no room for a greenhouse but usually Northern UK isnt too bad..we will see..always enjoy your videos
Its an amazing tree. And it will only become better over time. Hope you can get it out of that giant container soon
Let the styling begin.
Thanks, keep growing Looking good. It’s going to be interesting to see how it back buds over the summer.
Thank you Nigel for explaining why you are making the branches shorter and more compact 😊
Pine takes courage!! Man those were big cuts, over all I think it’s better but not easy to do!!
it looks like Frankenstein is frowning down at your sculpting work, Nigel! the architecture is truly taking shape… a great start to a worthy tree!
I can feel your angst, then elation when you see the results. Thank you for helping me gain the courage to make big cuts on my own trees (for their own good!).
Great job as always Nigel , what was the cement you were putting on the wounds ? , total inspiration , total legend !
Noice! Really enjoy watching the work you’ve done on this scots pine! Pretty awesome.
Great job Nigel. I cannot wait to see what pot you will choose in the future.
Updates on the pruning should bring out some nice spring growth.
Just started watching, I’m so nervous…
Nice pruning!
First Happy Holiday’s Nigel. Love your birthday pine. My question is any plans for the removing of some or all of what I call “ the explosion of dead wood” on the trunk ? It kinda takes your eye off the flow of the trunk line as you look at the tree. Sorry if I offend anyone with this question. Not my intention
You’re forgiven ✌️
Big improvement Nigel!

i think i would use the side we can see at 42:00 as the front the trunk has more movement and the dead branch on the left has more flow :)
and the straight part of the trunk near the canopy is also hidden from that side
i also was thinking you could use the deadwood to attach strings or cables to change the direction of some branches, i know you don't like wiring as i am :P
It's possible, I would have to tilt the tree quite far forward if I used that front view! Thanks!
Looking great, Nigel!
Pruning looks great. Now for spring growth.
@@victorbidois3514 I have seen people do it in December because their trees are kept above freezing. Usually, late summer. Depends on your location also. Since I am in the states, mine are dormant and I do not touch them. I like to do mine around end of July. I rub the sap on the cut to help seal it then. Since you are in France, if you have a county extension agent, they can let you the best time for your region. From what I know, late summer will also help with back budding. I hope this helps you out some. Enjoy a nice cup of tea tonight. Tom
Cool 😎

Your birthday tree is Epic. Great video, I enjoy seeing you make the decisions and talk about why. Very helpful.
Slow and steady wins this race!
