    Looking good Nigel! Hehe a great strategy to stay young! keep calling it your 60th Birthday Scots Pine for the next 10 years, you effectively stay 60 and everyone wishes you happy birthday every time you work on it!

    Very exciting to see you handle the "birthday tree" and guess it gives you certain extra responsibility to take care of it 😊
    Personally, I am a bit bugged with that central "bundle" of dead twigs as it takes all focus when I am looking at your tree.
    Always a risk that it would not look natural if removing it totally, but then again..it could be argued that the current does not look "natural" I probably would have taken some or whole off in some way. To be continued and usually you got it Nigel! 😉

      I think the eyesore is the thick stub below the bundle! ✌️

    A nice winter wonderland by you. Shoveling is a real back breaker. Have you tried WD 40 on the tracks? Might give some lubrication for easy opening of the doors. Just a thought.

    Nigel! The tokoname drumpot you got your Apple tree in hade been perfect for this pine! All the dead wood the elements on the tree and bumps hade match good to this tree. And the size is perfect?

  • @thenaturecreater8906
    @thenaturecreater8906 Год назад +1

    Did you see some new growth to it afther the trick you did with the soil? I did the same to 3 pines i bought from nursery last year and i stil have not seen new growth to it. I replaced the "muck" with akadam, pumice, lava mix.

    I love the view of the tree at 42:29, would you consider making that the front?

  • @t3dwards13
    @t3dwards13 Год назад +1

    It's interesting to see the comments about the "explosion" of deadwood being a distraction and unnatural... As if Ray grafted all of those on there. Lol
    It's as if the word "natural" has lost it's meaning.

    Good decision on removing that upper thick branch. I might have removed it completely. I'd consider timing point 50:42 or 50:47 as a possible front. I appreciate the natural look as well. Good work Nigel!

    I really love how you explain your thoughts on how to decide on things you do to your bonsai. Looking at several options and what not. Easier to understand why you do things. Hope to enjoy your videos for a long time. Watch almost every episode, sometimes even bing it. Love this tree! (it's Bart Stellink by the way, changed name for a channel I am soon starting and Bob has been my nickname for decades)

    I'm enjoying your explanations of each cut. And I'm noticing that our concepts of where the aesthetics lay in the tree are in line. I often catch myself predicting your cuts with a pretty good bit of accuracy. I've attempted Bonsai in my youth but never with as much research and patience as I have this go round. Keep the videos coming.

    Nigel, my humble opinion for the front is the main feature of the tree-the deadwood. At 36:26 that the best looking face. Another great rambling.

    Interesting tree. Scots Pines have no idea of the conventions of bonsai... That great spurt of dead stuff on the current rhs is distracting and needs to be resolved. Then again, it's a Scots Pine and stuff happens.

    First Happy Holiday’s Nigel. Love your birthday pine. My question is any plans for the removing of some or all of what I call “ the explosion of dead wood” on the trunk ? It kinda takes your eye off the flow of the trunk line as you look at the tree. Sorry if I offend anyone with this question. Not my intention

    i think i would use the side we can see at 42:00 as the front the trunk has more movement and the dead branch on the left has more flow :)

    • @arnaudinputselector
      @arnaudinputselector Год назад

      and the straight part of the trunk near the canopy is also hidden from that side

    • @arnaudinputselector
      @arnaudinputselector Год назад

      i also was thinking you could use the deadwood to attach strings or cables to change the direction of some branches, i know you don't like wiring as i am :P

      @@victorbidois3514 I have seen people do it in December because their trees are kept above freezing. Usually, late summer. Depends on your location also. Since I am in the states, mine are dormant and I do not touch them. I like to do mine around end of July. I rub the sap on the cut to help seal it then. Since you are in France, if you have a county extension agent, they can let you the best time for your region. From what I know, late summer will also help with back budding. I hope this helps you out some. Enjoy a nice cup of tea tonight. Tom
