I would suggest A Case of You, also from this acclaimed album, as your next Joni listen. She had joyous songs that celebrated life, but her introspective, sad ones are just so moving.
Joni's Blue album was voted the 4th greatest album ever recorded by Rolling Stone magazine. She came out of Canada and headed for the place that music was exploding and never looked back. She wrote the classic Woodstock, though she was not able to get to that epic gathering because she was booked on the Dick Cavett show in New York that same day. She performs that song on the Cavett show while the festival was just beginning. She became one of the greatest stars in that age of Rock and Roll, romantically involved with all four of the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young singers over time and wrote and performed music until she was old and gray, which is now. Joni was something special and still is though she now resides in her native Canada once more and keeps a home in Hollywood just to go there and see what award she must accept now. Along with Miles Davis and Eartha Kitt, she is the one that I still listen to in my car, in my parlour and in my head as I head toward 77.
I am so glad and impressed that you young men have embraced this music. I’m black, and I grew up in LA when her works were coming out. Joni not only sings her own stuff, she also wrote, produced, and did the artwork and designs for her albums. Best all all around musician of the later 20th century.
The belle of the Saskatchewan plains. Best living songwriter, imho. This is probably the best written album ever. It is consistently listed in the top 3 of all time greatest albums and mentioned as 1 of the most inspiring/inspirational among other top tier recording artists. The whole album is a masterpiece where she lays her heart bare for the world. I recommend "A Case of You" off this platter, or "Raised on Robbery" (with fellow Canuck Robbie Robertson on guitar) for a more up-tempo, fun tune. Her work with Charles Mingus, late in his career, is also outstanding. And yes, it is her playing the piano. She is also a very influential guitarist (her use of alternate tunings), and plays the dulcimer, as well.
Yup. That's JM on the piano...the guitar....the dulcimer....the vocals...the songwriting....she made me so jealous, her musicianship is extreme. And then, she tears out her heart in a song (Blue is a good example) and your heart bleeds, too. She's genuine, fearless and yes, that VOICE.
You guys are connecting the dots to my childhood in Canada when her songs were coming out freshly released over the CBC radio and now here you are, and here we all are, making sure we're not smashed into nothing but love.
This entire album is worth listening to--and more than once. The music is fascinating as are the lyrics. I believe some of the songs on Blue were influenced by her breakup from Graham Nash and her romance at that time with James Taylor (he plays guitar on some of the songs on the album). I wonder how someone can have so much talent -how is it possible? Joni's lyrics and music are brilliant & so original, she is an amazing musician, and what a heavenly voice! Plus, she's a great painter. ❤🎵
I never knew she was ALSO a great painter. She's in a league all of her own. Bravo❗What a beautiful song. I'm about to Google her artwork. Thanks for that narrative about her skills😊
Another artist who has several eras she excelled in each. Court and Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Dog Eat Dog, Mingus, Turbulent Indigo and so many other albums. Simply one of a kind.
I was about 13-14 when I bought this album. It was one of the first albums I payed for myself. I listened to it over and over and over. I think it might have changed the direction of my life.
Great reaction - Joni is one of a kind, a huge, timeless talent. Strongly recommend continuing with Blue, "A Case of You" or"River" (it's kind of a Christmas song....). She writes and plays everything. Have loved this album for 30+ years.
You guys need to hear the whole Blue album, reactions or not. It's a peak musical thing. Joni's amazing at everything. Singer, writer, lyricist, player, so sophisticated melodically & harmonically for pop music, later she veered into more jazz oriented stuff with a bunch of amazing all stars. But Blue is my favorite album by her, one of my favorites of all.
She was part of the Laurel Canyon scene back in the late 60's and 70's along with James Taylor, Crosby Stills and Nash, Niel Young, Eagles , etc. They would all hang out at each others houses and jam and write songs together or for each other.
This whole album is an absolute masterpiece of songwriting and performance. And yes, that's her on the piano. Few could even touch them hem of her immense talent. And oh yeah, she is a hell of a painter, too.

The more I listen to this song (long time Joni fan of nearly four decades standing), the further up the pantheon it goes. The recurring seafaring metaphor is touched with genius: words are like tattoos/you know I've been to sea/ crown and anchor me [sailors getting their traditional tattoos]. Then we get: And there is a song for you/ Ink on a pin/ Underneath the skin/ An empty space to fill in Another thing I love is that while the song is widely believed to be about James Taylor, Blue being her nickname for him, it can also be read as a song sung directly to depression.

That is Joni on the piano. Supposedly referring to James Taylor. The album is a classic, shows her introspective side. I think most of the other songs on album are better. Great to see she is widely sampled. She is so well-respected among her peers and younger singer-songwriters. Check out her live performance at the Newport Folk Festival 2022 singing “Both Sides Now”. Great album from a great artist, they aren’t many of them around anymore, love her music and vocals, she writes all her songs about things that happen in her life, definitely listen to the entire album
This is a massive body of work that she has done since the 60s. If I was you guys, I would queue up the live Miles of Aisles album. It’s her wonderful tunes done as she veered towards jazz. Definitely one of my favorite recordings ever.
Enjoyable reaction as usual. I was gonna call back the other "Full Circle" moment (Janet Jackson) from Joni you gents had, with the "Big Yellow Taxi," but you beat me to it! Major influence on so many, and I'm sure even more than my casual fan-bein' butt knows. I do know there's damn good reason Robert Plant basically wrote and performed the lyrics for "Going to California" with her in mind. Jimmy Page also crushed hard on her, but she resisted their god-tier charms, lol! (Which is maybe yet another reason they crushed so hard on her!)
I first bought this album when I was 20 years old, having come to her via the Heija album. I've listened to her for the last 47 years and this song ALWAYS tears me up. It's raw emotion that seeks out and finds you most vulnerable parts of your soul. Thank you Gentlemen.
That was definitely Joni playing the piano. I've seen her perform “Blue” live, and it is transcendent. Probably the bluesiest track of her career at the point when she recorded it, and an important step in her transition from folk musician to jazz artist.
Oh boy! I suggested you hit jonis jazz phase with jaco pastorius before. Steely dan level amazing: Don juans wreckless daughter (double lp) Shadows and light (with the best jazz band any singer has ever had!) 1979 live. This was the end of the 70s this live disc. Marked 1980. Wonderful you covering joni! The 1st women artist to have full control of her whole career. Art and songs and production. Everything. She waited till she had full control. ❤
JONI was The Singer/Songwriter Goddess Queen. BLUE was written during a very melancholic phase in her life when I was in my mid teens, and the introspwcyive heavy mood of the entire album hit me emotionally very powerfully hard. Saw her live in 74 & she was pure magic on stage.
Joni plays Piano, Guitar, Dulcimer and a few other instruments on her albums. She was very popular for quite a lot of years and wrote music that so many other top tier musicians recorded. Joni writes music differently than most musicians which she says is to convey the emotion of the applied lyrics through the notes as well or to make a profound statement. I love Joni Mitchell an always have a couple of her CDs in my car to sing along to. Thank you for your reactions.
If Joni could only have played guitar and piano the way she did, sing like an angel, or write those songs, that would have been pretty damn good; but she did all of those things, my word. This is a ground-breaking album. Great upload.
She's an artist's artist. Yes, she plays the piano too, and here it's played brilliantly like the undulating waves of the ocean. What an amazingly penetrating and lyrical song about her blues at that time. Prince (& so many others) also admired her music and covered one of her songs "Case of You." His favorite album of hers was "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," I think. I had no idea the song Blue was sampled by any band, let alone a hip-hop/rap band. Enjoyed your reaction!
The album is a masterpiece. I think it's number 3 on the latest Rolling Stone top 500 list. Check out A Case of You next. She's up there with Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Paul Simon et al as a song writer. And what a voice. Sublime.

And by the way, that IS Joni on piano. She’s an amazing guitarist too.
Loved your thoughtful reaction to one of the greats.
Yes. Piano. Guitar. Dulcimer. Songwriter. Singer. Every damned thing a musical artist could do.
Yes, that's her piano composition and playing, ... Magic
I first bought this album when I was 20 years old, having come to her via the Heija album. I've listened to her for the last 47 years and this song ALWAYS tears me up. It's raw emotion that seeks out and finds you most vulnerable parts of your soul. Thank you Gentlemen.
"For Free" by Joni, a must listen.
One of her greatest. That is her on piano.
I was born in 1960 so my entire teenage years were in the 70s and I grew up loving Joni Mitchell 🙂
Amazing song, 1971 and still as relevant as ever.
Steely dan level amazing:
Don juans wreckless daughter (double lp)
Shadows and light (with the best jazz band any singer has ever had!) 1979 live.
This was the end of the 70s this live disc. Marked 1980.
Wonderful you covering joni!
The 1st women artist to have full control of her whole career. Art and songs and production. Everything. She waited till she had full control.
❤
simply beautiful. she lives in the space occupied by very few artists in time.
Great
JONI was The Singer/Songwriter Goddess Queen.
Joni is so good! I could listen to her for hours. Heck, I HAVE listened to her for hours. ☺️
“ she can write her ass off” - truer words were never spoken, ha ha! Great reaction!
You might enjoy Neil Young's ode to growing up, "Sugar Mountain," and Joni's amazing response, "Circle Game."
Just lovely love you guys
Joni always created such emotional music!
Great reaction. Aye, thats Joni on the piano.
Glad to see some softer stuff from y'all. Joni is a treasure. Try some Judy Collins as well.
The album is a masterpiece. I think it's number 3 on the latest Rolling Stone top 500 list. Check out A Case of You next. She's up there with Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Paul Simon et al as a song writer. And what a voice. Sublime.
