Great that modern biologists look after these last holdouts of an evolutionary line close to our own. These scientists are heroes
One of the biggest threats to lemurs is habitat loss from coal mining. Just another reason to get off fossil fuels. I'm lucky enough to get to work with ring tail lemurs sometimes. It would truly be a shame to lose such a unique primate with such personality and cuteness.
The biggest issue is non-Europeans having 5-10 kids per family, encroaching on all habitats and consuming everything.
How about forced sterilization after 3 kids, by government agencies? I mean here in the USA the cost of taxing everything makes families less likely to have more than 2-3 kids.
The 3rd World menace is a biggest threat to biodiversity than anything this planet has ever seen. Imagine, one species responsible for planetary extinction of the rest of 99% of species.

How is it there? Are the reports of forest destruction as bad as they say?
ShadowCastPro Unfortunately yes, the Malagasy population only cooking charcoal (even in the capital) where the rapid destruction of forests.
Alain Viollet awww, it makes me sad that I can't directly help at all as I live in the UK and everywhere with a forest etc. is protected.
There are volunteer groups that help plant trees and do other things for lemurs. Perfect for a gap year?
Funding for these groups and others is always welcome.

While everyone is making references to the film Madagascar, don’t forget there are also lemurs in the disney film Dinosaur
Why don't they try to move lemurs into Borneo or the Amazon if they want them to live so much? Fact is species of animals that evolve to live in a certain climate or niche are usually the first to go extinct. Lemurs were only able exist on Madagascar, that alone makes them an endangered animal.
You can't just drop animals into different ecosystems. Look at what the introduction of birds and pigs did to Hawaii. It would just cause another species to be threatened.

I love lemurs, my family and I visited the Duke Lemur Center before. My favorite lemurs living there are the ring-tailed lemurs, Coquerel's sifaka lemurs, ruffed lemurs, blue-eyed black lemurs, aye-ayes, mouse lemurs and fat-tailed dwarf lemurs.

***** Because they are endangered animals and when you buy them you're paying for people to take them out of the wild. Not only this but most of them die before they even go to the pet owners and when kept as a pet they only live around 2 years when they are meant to live for 20. Nat Geo just advertised them to the public and made people want to buy them, this is why they are doing harm.
