    The idea that the Leica M6 is "more affordable" back then is not true.
    M6 in 1984: $1,695
    Adjusted for inflation: $4,842 in 2022
    Accounting for the better components made of brass and today's labor cost:
    the MSRP of $5,295 is only reasonable.

    The retail price will be $5,295.
    In Europe the retail price will be €5,050.00 including VAT.

    All these comments about it being an MP with M6 add-ons. It's not. It's an M6 copy with all new internals, and it only shares the MP finder with the MP. The electronics for the meter are all-new and more future-proof as well. The sources for the MP/M-A parts were not reliable, so Leica has moved to this new version of the M6 platform, which will allow faster production of these cameras that what we're used to with the MP/M-A. Sources: Jono Slack's review of the new 35mm Steel Rim where he also reviews the M6, which was published on Leica Forum, and Andrea Pacella, Leica's Director of Global Marketing & Communication, who was interviewed by Hugh Brownstone here on RUclips published a few days ago.

      @brundontfreeze000 2 года назад

      You miss heard the conversation, Leica has been having issues with supply-chain the last few years, Andrea mentioned this and so leica R&D had to requalify new manufactuers that produce the parts for their cameras and take some manufacturing in-house to ramp up production. Andrea said that the new M6 is different from the OLD M6 but never mentioned being different to the current line of leica film cameras.

      @@brundontfreeze000 Read Jono's remarks/replies further down in his 35mm Steel Rim review on Leica Forum. He was told by Leica that the new M6 internals are all new - "basically an entirely new camera" to quote. It wouldn't be an entirely new camera if it were an MP in M6 dress. Jono specifically says he was told both the electronics for the meter and the mechanical internal parts were different from the MP.

      @settingofthesuns 2 года назад

      @@brundontfreeze000 Here is one of Jono's posts from the thread I'm referencing: "As I understand it . . the problem Leica have making the MP (and the M-A to a lesser extent) is that many of the parts were made by suppliers who no longer exist, so creating another camera with the same internals would be pretty stupid.
      So the M6 is substantially different - I guess Leica are producing the printed circuit boards themselves in Portugal, but I don't know for sure.
      I would have thought a more likely (and better) solution would be if they now changed the MP a little to take advantage of the modern supply chain for the M6. . . . but I don't know this. What I do know is that they shouldn't have too much trouble producing the M6 in substantial numbers and then being able to supply spares for many years to come."

    • @brundontfreeze000
      @brundontfreeze000 2 года назад

      @@settingofthesuns Taking " i guess" and "As I understand" as concrete examples is foolish. Andrea who actuall works for the company stated plain and simple, supply-chain issues needed to be fixed and it was solved by finding new macnufacturing resources, and in-house production. As someone who works in manufacturing and in R&D: it truly would be VERY stupid if you just dump everything and start a-new, it would be costly. It would be smarter to use same internals, but invest in new tooling for just top plates. It even uses the same paint from the Leica M11!

    Even though the new Leica M6 is over 5 grand, this is good news for every photographer because other companies will start debating on making new film cameras.
    Sure, it might not happen or if it does it'll take a long time before camera companies figure out a way to make film cameras with modern lens mounts. But, the idea that one company is willing to make a new film camera in 2022 is exciting. I really hope Nikon, Pentax, or Voigtlander see the potential of releasing new cameras.

    Rumours had been out long time and if you haven’t been living under a rock the last year this came as no surprise. Only question was if it’s limited or not. The retro hype is booming and Leica wants its share in that. Fair enough.
    It’s a pity they don’t bring anything new to the table. It’s a redressed MP with a lot of marketing hype.

    Exciting about your zine coming out soon (I'd already preordered). But, obviously also exciting about the M6 coming back from the dead. I have an M6 and an MP. @@nicolasfilsdejean I can't imagine there is much difference at all between a new MP and a new M6, mostly just cosmetics. I think the packaging is different with the M6 than the MP. So, the main differences are 'red dot' vs 'no red dot' and a little extra storage space at home! ;)

      It’s basically an M6 refresh model but others have said what is most beneficial about this release: more companies will consider film camera releases and probably easier access to repairs for older M6 cameras. On top of this, down the line more 35mm film options and cheaper prices. I agree it’s basically an MP with the M6 look. I too have a (silver) MP and don’t plan to upgrade.

It'll be the same machines manufacturing the parts, the same technicians assembling them - at the same glacial speed Leica is putting out MPs and MAs in homeopathic amounts each year.

    • @weisserth
      @weisserth 2 года назад

      @@arkphotog Leica does not care if they can sell more MPs - they already have way more orders for MPs than they can satisfy with production - the wait list is months to years. This move was not about pushing more film cameras through production into the market. This is about marketing for the Leica brand, not a specific Leica product. It's brand marketing. And quite effective because everyone is eating up the BS message that Leica is putting out with the help of creatives like Joe Greer. "It changes everything!".
      The M6 as a product brand has become stronger than the MP as a product brand. The M6 design language with the red dot has caught up with the MP as a status symbol and brand ambassador. That is the ONLY reason this new MP variant now exists.
