  • In the past year, John Deere has been rolling out excavators under its new performance-tier model naming system.
In this episode of The Dirt, we find out what’s behind the new strategy and what operators and owners need to know about the new machines. Justin Steger, John Deere’s solutions marketing manager, demystifies the naming, which gets rid of the “series” nomenclature of the past and replaces it with, in most cases, P-Tier models.
Steger also lays out what new features and technology accompanies the tier models, including options on some of the excavators to add Deere’s Smart Grade machine control technology.
So if you want to be in the know on the latest in Deere excavators and what those single “P” and “G” letters on the machines mean, check out this week’s episode of The Dirt.

My first opportunity to operate an excavator was 1986. I was hooked. From back then on a 235 Cat, to the oil mines in Alberta (Fort Hills, Suncor, and Kearl Lake) operating Hitachi 8000 and Komatsu 8000 seemed to fly bye. I am retired now and don't really miss it, but I would jump back on one of these new excavators to "have a feel" of the new technology. Great video.

So big question. Obviously, the P Tier with grade control are going to have to be Electric over hydraulic controls. But are the cheaper G Tier still hydraulic over hydraulic controls? I have an Equipment Rental Business and for most of my renters the grade control is not something they will use, or at least very few. A lot of operators really still want hydraulic controls.

so are they just Hitachi -7 models? So Hitachi is doing all the hard work and Deere aren't mentioning that at all.

Hitachi and Deere have gone their separate ways. Hitachi no longer makes Deere excavators also not made in the same factories anymore

They are transitioning away indeed but it's not done yet, this year Hitachi is still producing for them. Don't know about G or P tier though.

I disagree, having operated both a lot, I think the Deere is better especially hydraulics. I am happy to see them end their partnership with Hitachi because the cab needs a big update as well and a few other things. I guess Cat makes larger models as well but overall the operability on Deere construction equipment is better in my experiences and opinion

Modern technology is outstanding---until it's not!!!! I come from the old school thinking where an experienced operator is worth their wait in gold. An experienced operator knows his machine and a "novice" has no clue!!!

The P series is just copying the I machines from Komatsu … the Deere is not on the same level as the Komatsu meaning Komatsu >Deere

Komatsu suck dude. Deere are using badge engineered Hitachi. Hitachi and Volvo are the best machines out.

Grade control in excavators is still pretty crappy

Most guys today can't operate. I can get it within an inch at least by eye. No need for grade control if you know what you're doing

@johnzadinya2181 used to dig hundreds of meters of ditch per day with nothing but a paint mark on my stick. The new technology won't make a crappy operator good but it will make an excellent operator more excellent
