An Old Book to Turn Boys Into Batman

- In this video I cover the book Fun For Boys edited by William Allan Brooks in 1943. It’s basically a compendium of activities that will transform boys into confident, well-adjusted men, while having fun learning useful hobbies like training your dog, woodworking, building a powerful physique, boxing & Japanese Jiujitsu for self-defense, and the science of wrestling. I highly recommend you check out the video! The book is chalk-full of wisdom, great advise, and a few outdated and hilarious suggestions.
You can still find these on Ebay from time to time. It's definitely worth the hunt!

I think you bought all the copies from E-Bay because I can't find any lol...but thank you for this video. Sad that few kids read at all today.
Try thriftbooks Abebooks or Biblio
They pop up every so often I've been collecting these for a few years now
@@ParkerNotes Thanks. I'll keep looking! I've started collecting the Armed Services Editions novels. It's so cool that soldiers were reading the novels during downtime in the war.
The Dangerous Book for Boys (and there's also The Dangerous Book for Girls) as well as The Double Dangerous Book for Boys could be a good modern version of the same kind of book. Just in case you can't find a copy of Fun for Boys on eBay or wherever else. 😊
Edit. There's an American as well as a British oriented version of the Dangerous Book for Boys (and Girls).
I've read _The Pocket Dangerous Book for Boys_ , which I think is a selection of material from the first _Dangerous Book for Boys_ , and liked it quite a bit.
I also really enjoyed _The American Boy's Handybook_ . It was first published in 1882, but it's still widely available. It was written by the founder of the Sons of Daniel Boone, which merged with the Boy Scouts around the turn of the century. Two of my favorite parts in it are how to use illuminating gas (for gas lights in a home before the advent of electric lighting) to blow iridescent-and highly flammable-soap bubbles and how to make a "fighting" kite with razor blades hanging from it. (The razors are for cutting opponents' kite strings, not for causing bodily harm.)
this reminded me of my copy of the dangerous book. gotta go dig it up!
I remember having the daring book for girls when I was little! This is such a throw back and I want to find a copy for my husband ❤️
🙌🙌🙌
Thank you Parker, for sharing your ideas with us. You’ve helped me get back into writing, you also got me into philosophy. Keep up the amazing work man. Always makes my day when I see you upload another video
This is incredible! I'm so glad to have played a role! 🤝
Thank you for your recommendation. Thanks to you, I've been introduced to philosophy, writing, and journaling!
Let's go!! I'm pumped that I get to be part of your intellectual journey
Watched and liked because the you tube algorithm is not picking this gem up like you mentioned in the email! Keep on posting , love your stuff
🙌🫡🫡🫡 thank you!
📖 boutta start reading the unabridged count of monte cristo and totally looking forward to it
Oh it's sooo good!
About half way through it right now. Trust me, the abridged version does just as much injustice as the Jim C movie
Loved the video!
🙌🙌
📚Loved this look at what the right book at the right time can do for a kid. Stories about how you kept going back to the book as you grew were great anecdotes.
I homeschooled my two kids with a “living literature” approach (Charlotte Mason-style), lots of reading aloud and narration of shared reading. The book list in this book is probably over 3/4 of what would show up in the curriculum plans. Learning that you and your dad shared The Count of Monte Cristo as a read aloud made me smile and want to comment on what an awesome job you are doing already with your daughter and wanting to continue the living literature tradition. 🎉
Thank you for this! What an encouragement!! 😁
“each man is his own policeman” is great lol
Haha totally!
That's a brilliant video Parker. My first book was eerily similar. It was called "The Boys Own Book of Hobbies". Must have worked, look at you and I now!!
Oh cool! I'll look for it too!
I'm sorry, but there's no way you have the art book for Batman: The Animated Series. That book is rare and expensive! I'm jealous!
You're not wrong! Took a while to find and by then I was willing to pay a pretty penny haha
All stuff I want my daughter to learn too!
😍
📕 loved the video ❤
I'm so glad! I'm hoping others will too but it's not look good based on the analytics 😅😅😅
📕 Thanks for the recommendation

📕 I would love more videos about your favourite books! 😀😁
Really cool book :D I'm a 22-year-old gal, so honestly I didn't think of myself as the target audience for this video, (at least for now, maybe in the future when I, hopefully, have kids) but I revisited it after I read your post on Substack. And I'm glad I did :))
Let's go! I'm so glad you came and watched it and that you enjoyed it!
📕 this was so much fun
🙌🙌
Love the videos! But now I’m buying more notebooks and leather covers
Haha I'm sorry 😅
0:45 I have a hard cover Machiavelli book that does the same thing. Should I try to fix it myself or find someone else that could do it properly?
Parker! Big love from Sydney Australia man. I’ve been searching for this book to get delivered here in Aus- near impossible by looks of it! Can I purchase one of yours for the right $? 😅
Thanks bro! Maybe I should scan it and send you a digital copy!
Won’t find it now lol. Great video.
Haha yeah I only made this video after I collected a few more 😅 thanks!
@@ParkerNotes smart man.
What’s going on with the algo today? You should have more views rn.
No idea. It's not happy with me. -6 subs on this vid so far too hahaha 😅🥲
You should review the Warrior Kid series by Jocko Willink
I keep forgetting about those. Good call. Thanks for the reminder!
Anyone know if there's a pdf version bc I cant find any copies on ebay lol
📚📙📘📗📕📑📔📒 been subscribed for a long time but never watched your videos fully today was a great first complete watch
Yes! That's awesome. Glad I could finally get cha haha
Year One is great 🦇
🤝🤝
If you are looking for another book like it there is one called the dangerous book for boys
It is a bit different however I would still recommend it if you can find it
That’s the one I had but it’s more about projects than hard skills like this book. Both are super cool tho.
I'll check it out, thanks!
📕 don’t listen to Parker boys, there’s never been a better time to get in the pigeon raising business! No, for real though: this is cool looking back at something like this from back in the day. Also shout out to grandma!
She was the best!!
@parkernotes how do you define philosopher? What makes one a philosopher?
Hard to give the necessary and sufficient conditions on what counts. I call myself a philosopher because I have a Master's degree in philosophy, and two Master's in theology where I focused on philosophical theology, I host a podcast where I read philosophy papers and then discuss them with their authors, who are some of the best philosophers working today, and I regularly have papers accepted to present at philosophy conferences. So I do public and academic philosophy and make my living through philosophy. Some lay folks think it's weird to call yourself a philosopher because they think it's a term of honor or something and some academic think you have to have a PhD to have the right to call yourself a philosopher. I think both views are mistaken. All that said, I don't claim to be a good philosopher.
@parkersnotes I was asking to get a better understanding for myself. I’ve been told I have a philosopher‘s mind and I think this is because I tend to think about abstract concepts, and how things work. I guess a little different than most people and I also have taking interest in philosophy, I am currently reading a book called how to think like a philosopher by Nick Cave, and it’s got chapter about several different philosophers going on going over what they thought about different things. I agree with some of the things and also disagree with some of their thoughts on matters as well. so I was simply trying to get a better understandingunderstandingon what it might mean to be a philosopher I know you can go to school for it, but to be honest, I wonder if there is a natural philosopher mindset, and if that’s something that could be taught or not.
@@lawrencepeterson8179 I think there are definitely different aptitudes for philosophy for sure. Some of the students I taught just had it and could give lightning fast counter examples and think like a philosopher and others just couldn't or wouldn't engage like that. And I couldn't predict who would be good either, that was the most exciting part
Commenting for the algo. 📖
