You are correct, but notice that "she," like many others, do not succeed.😉 The lyrics are what makes this a great tune. The music for this song isn't all that exciting without them, but the music does serve "the song" well.. Great lyrics are the backbone of the best LZ tunes. Exactly why the Presence album is much better than people give it credit for.. 😉👍
“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.” - J RR Tokien (a prophecy about a seemingly unimportant raggedy old ranger becoming King over Gondor)

Wow Finally someone else gets it. I would add two things. I believe you have slightly wrong. We know at the time of writing Plant was into Celtic mysticism. which in all fairness is where Tolken gets this concept from. The West is indeed the Celtic version of Heaven. What I think you misunderstood is the next stanza. The rings of Smoke through the tress is also a Celtic reference to the festival of Beltane. This is a festival celebrating the transition from spring to summer and the end of calving season in which the whole community gathered in the forest and built a bonfire often in circles and danced through and around the fires and sang songs to the Celtic God of fire Belenus and The May Queen Goddess. The Symbol of birth purity and spiritual growth. All fitting into the narrative you have pointed to for this song. In Fact if you look at the chain dance that is common in Celtic celebrations today that has everyone join in a circle and dance together you see that dance of this festival. The final point I think you are a bit off on is the Shadow and the Soul. The fact that is makes reference to winding down the road thus referencing our journey through life. The Shadow represents our deeds our actions the fact it is taller than our soul which is our true Identity shows that we are still far away from the light source, if we were close to the source our shadow would be smaller than ourselves. We know this is what is being said because first off the Lady is on the same road as we are. Secondly he then goes on to say that we must still listen very hard for the truth to finally come to us. And then he states what that Truth is. To be a rock and not to roll. To be firm in your convictions. Most people have a very high moral standard the real challenge in life is to live up to that standard yourself and not to roll over when that moral standard becomes inconvenient (ie:to stand firm on your convictions your morals even if it leads to your death.) Jesus says the same thing Judge Not lest you are judged for the same measure you put on others is the measure you will have to stand up to. We all have our moral code and we judge others actions by that code the real Question is do you live up to it yourself, are you a rock that does not roll? One final thought is that in symbolism a woman very, very often represents false religion or beliefs. ie the Whore of Babylon comes to mind who loves gold and is responsible for not only all who have been murdered on Earth but for the wanton destruction of Earth.
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page confirmed the part referring to Jung and the Shadow in an interview when they were touring together. They played some of Stairway to Heaven and when asked about the meaning of the song Robert said to Jimmy should he give the Jungian interpretation of it but did not expand upon that. There is a clip of it on RUclips. Somerset Belenov is an interesting reference as the May Queen. The illumanati. This song could be even deeper than what is presented here. Who is behind our materialistic world and selling us all these shiny products and telling us we can buy our way to heaven?
Good questions. The one in complete oppostion to true spiritual understanding replicates his version. "Satan himself keeps disguising himself as an angel of light" who is misleading the entire inhabited earth. People are enamored by what he claims to offer but in the end he leads them to destruction...completely away from the true God and Creator. He guides the masses on the road leading away from true happiness. (2nd Corinthians 11:13 - Revelation 12:9)

Very good explanation. When the song came out, i was in jr high, and I have listened many times to it,only understanding bits and pieces. Your explanation is good, thank you.
Ain’t nothing like a Mystic message. And stairway to Heaven is one of those songs that made you think. Unlike most of the songs that are out there today. Done with not much talent not much injinuity a bunch of computers and autotune.
Bravo for your excellent analysis. Your work illustrates how literature can be deciphered in a manner that sheds light upon elements deserving the greatest artistic appreciation. Not only has your contribution been much appreciated, it's much needed for our time.
Thank you for that enlightening insight on this song. Ive sang it numerous times and tried hard to connect the dots as to its meaning. Being a spiritual person i can relate to every bit of it from a Christian perspective. I’ve felt those thoughts in my own mind and i think Robert Plant did a great job poetically framing these thoughts. I’m not familiar with Eastern Religions but i can certainly relate it through the many biblical teachings over the years. I guess whatever source one chooses will determine their understanding of eternity and path. Christianity to me is the only source of salvation.
All of this was immediately and intuitively obvious to me the first time I heard Stairway to Heaven... some 40+ years ago... it was describing what I saw around me and what I saw coming...
As a tarot reader, I am deeply moved to learn that the Hermit and the Star cards have inspired this timeless masterpiece. Thanks for this deep analysis, you have made my day!
Other great bands have albums or tracks with difficult lyrics. Tull, Yes, and Blue Oyster Cult, only to name a few. There are too many. Stairway lyrics are not "special" in that regard.
Being French (although bilingual), I didn’t grasp all of the cultural references and English meaning of some of the sentences in that song. However, intuitively, that song resonated deep with me. Now, thanks for your analysis, you extracted its essential oil and distilled it in a clear and concise way for us to « hear the wind blow ». Everything makes so much sense now and although I once heard RP say in an interview that this was a song written by a 24 yr old boy and that he preferred Kashmir over STH… I guess, he, himself, has not « heard the wind blow »even though he wrote it and performed it over a thousand times in his life 😉. Don’t get me wrong, Kashmir is an exceptional piece of music that I admire as well but STH is a special « gem » all of its own. Thank you so much for this in-depth analysis 🙏!
Thanks!! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I fully agree with everything you've said. Perhaps Robert lost his faith in some of these matters somewhere along the way, as we tend to shed our earlier beliefs as we wind on down the road. But bless him for providing us with these lyrics when he did. If viewed correctly, they can be life altering in the best way.
When I heard this song for the first time I bought their album. It's the best song from the world. It was always difficult for the best interpretation of the text. This is a better analyse with the basic for the text. I understand better what the context is. I have the whis that this number must be played at my last day.
This is such an AWESOME song, and Robert Plant is a fantastic song writer. Many years ago this song was my girlfriend's favorite song. and because I cared for her very much I wanted to make it my favorite song also. an our song sorta thing? but after listening to the song. I liked it so much. it wouldn't have mattered if it was her favorite song or not.. and over the years I have tried to figure out the meaning of the song. and best I could come up with was the two characters the lady and the piper. and was buying the stairway to heaven. because this is in the lyrics. but as far as I could figure the piper was going to go with her? but that was about it. but after hearing this explanation of the meaning of the song. it's much more profound than I thought thanks.
WOW - The Lyrics are way more Esoteical & Spiritual Than I ever Imagined. Has anyone notified Shaggy? Not even he knows? LOL This is Fabulous! From The House of "THEE HOLY" LOVE U ROBERT! XOXO ~xMx~ Amen
Fantastic video. After over 5 decades of sitting at the beach at night listening to this song on my cellphone while gazing out over the glimmering moonlight on water and tracing it back up to the full moon, I came to more deeply understand the lyrics and appreciate the sound to the "Stairway to Heaven". Halloween night is the best night for this song. There are a few other songs that go well with that setting too. I wanted to make a music video of that song showing what I experienced but the lack of light for my camcorder made it too grainy. Instead, I made a music video showing a path through the real world into a beautiful magical world and then having to leave and return back to the real world by way of paths though an imaginary decreasingly less beautiful mystical world. I used the London Philharmonic Symphony in my RUclips video of this song. I think that goes better with a daylight vision.
I love this! Absolutely agree! Once you complete tha Major Arcana, you go back to the Fool with all of that gained experience from the first go 'round and begin anew. Great insight!
Well done. There are other allusions to JRR Tolkien's work as well, including in this song. The line "all that glitters is gold" appears in Tolkien in slightly different form in a poem in 'The Lord of the Rings', which goes, "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost..." In other words, inner knowledge may not glitter, but it may still be of great value. The use of the word "glitter" by Plant cannot be accidental. The lady that shines white light seems modeled on Galadriel in a physical sense at least, who is "tall, white, and fair." She gives Frodo the gift of a phial that "glittered [that word again] as she moved it, and rays of white light sprang from her hand." She says that the phial is "...a light in dark places, when all other lights go out." Galadriel herself had long ago made the fateful choice to join the Elves following Feanor to seek physical riches by trying to recover the stolen simarils. This had lead only to endless strife, suffering, death, and banishment from Valinor ("the West") for the Elves that made this choice. Only when Galadriel passed the test of rejecting the One Ring, was this ban removed. She had chosen the path of inner peace and enlightenment over wealth and power. Also, the line "can you hear the wind blow", may actually be a triple entendre, and not just a double. It can refer to the two things mentioned here, but it can also be a reference to nature, embodied by the wind, asking if the listener is aware of the presence of nature all around him/her.
Very nice! I did consider Galadriel for the "shines white light" section, but decided against it based on her purity in the story. But, I just may should've included it. Everything you wrote was quite intriguing! Thanks!
@@Lyristoric Although Galadriel was a lady who could get what she came for with a word, and did have a West looking longing, the Lady's goldlust seems more characteristic of dragons, or perhaps dwarves (though they would have preferred mithril), while Galadriel seemed more generous with her golden, and glittering non-gold gifts, incluing giving 3 of her golden hairs to a dwarf. She also declined the One (gold) Ring. And her use of Nenya to make Lothlórien a forest paradise makes her sound more like your characterization of the Piper than the Lady. On the other hand, Lórien could have the meaning "Land of Gold". But no, Galadriel is too capable of distinguishing glitter from gold to be the Lady. And if the Piper is as you claim, then Tom (the moss-gatherer) Bombadil would be a much better fit there.

^. ^ Yes indeed! A very good analysis of the song but you missed out some things that come from Celtic and Greek mythology. I don't really think that even Robert Plant could explain fully the meaning . What we can agree about is that it's an amazing musical composition! Foxy Pagan love fae Scotland VVxx
Can't agree with all of it but it's always interesting when people come up with their own interpretation. To me this song has been and will remain open for different interpretations. I think that was the song's purpose from the beginning... for everyone to see themselves in it and interpret it in their own way.
99% will not understand. But it's about a modern version of Nimrod/Semiramus and the tower of Babbel. Paige and Plant were worshippers of Crowley. Truly decieved men chasing a truly evil man.
What's interesting about the "backward masking" claims is that if you don't read along to what the claimer provides in a "follow the bouncing ball" method over the words interpreted to be satanic in nature, it would just sound like gibberish. "The power of suggestion" is relied on heavily in that scenario. Whereas some artists like the Beatles intentionally and cleverly used phrases that when played backwards were designed to convey a message ("Number nine...number nine..."), when Robert was asked about whether or not that was part of STH, he exclaimed "it's hard enough coming up with lyrics as it is!"...and stated he was being given way too much credit by anyone claiming to be hearing messages while playing it backwards.
All the while listening to this, the song that kept playing in my head was………… Fleetwood Mac, Dreams! 😂 Yea, no. That song rocks, but with every narration, Stairway was just cranked up to 11 in my head. Now, if was back mask the two paths part…. If you know, then you know. 😂 EXCELLENT VIDEO!

One of the greatest bands of all time, no contest!
love their music!
Nailed it and so well presented - thank you 🎉
Very many thanks in return! Glad you liked it!
Wow! This gets very deep. This will give listening to the song more meaning now.
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Interpretation of this song 🧐🙏❤️
Thank you for the lessons in poetry and proper writing? 👍
Many thanks in return! Glad you liked it!
It's about our struggle to be our highest selves
That has always been my impression of it as well.
You are correct, but notice that "she," like many others, do not succeed.😉
The lyrics are what makes this a great tune. The music for this song isn't all that exciting without them, but the music does serve "the song" well..
Great lyrics are the backbone of the best LZ tunes. Exactly why the Presence album is much better than people give it credit for.. 😉👍
"Here's to my sweet satan"......
It was divinely inspired...Robert knew when he wrote it
Thank you for the clarity ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Much appreciated!!
The variety of human emotions on this album is nice. Its got it all.
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
- J RR Tokien (a prophecy about a seemingly unimportant raggedy old ranger becoming King over Gondor)
I have always known these men were not evil. If they were, they would have pioneered 'Death Metal' not uplifting Rock & Roll.
Thank you, Led Zeppelin.

Thank you! Very interesting points! Especially the Beltane history! Love it!
I agree.
What a deep dive! There's priceless information in this song and video explaining it!
Happy to hear you found it interesting!
Great content, Mr.! Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks!! Many more on the way!!
Wow. It all makes sense now. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A great and worthy question!
Merci!

I really enjoy your interpretation of this classic song. So clear and make so much sense ❤

The chakras are the stairway to heaven and the rock that doesn't roll is the pineal gland. The word that gets her what she came for is "Om."
I already knew that "Battle of Evermore" was based on some Tolkien's writings, but this video informed me of Plant's trend of using Tolkien's writings for inspiration throughout Zeppelin's musical reign
Yes. Wonderful

All the appreciation in the world right back at you! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
The fact that there’s a Highway to Hell and only a Stairway to Heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic numbers.
Great point! 😄 🤣 😂
The highway is not very congested because they could never leave Hotel California.

This is a very interesting breakdown of this song, Thank you. Excellent food for thought. As for me and my house, We choose to follow God Almighty of the Bible. Nice how even this song lifts him up. :-)

"For what shall it profit 'the lady', if she shall gain the whole world, and lose her own soul?
Amazing!
The "and the voices of those who stand looking" line refers to the people in the audience at Led Zeppelin shows.
Absolutely amazing work mate your words touched my soul very deeply ❤all the best from South Australia 🇦🇺

Wow that was interesting
What an analysis, what a masterpiece!
Very good explanation. When the song came out, i was in jr high, and I have listened many times to it,only understanding bits and pieces. Your explanation is good, thank you.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, Jack!
Thanks! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!!
Wow! Thank you.
Fantastic. Thank you.
Many thanks in return! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is amazing thanks so much for this post
I appreciate this! So glad you enjoyed it!
All of this was immediately and intuitively obvious to me the first time I heard Stairway to Heaven... some 40+ years ago... it was describing what I saw around me and what I saw coming...
If I would listen to this song 100 more times I wouldn't understand the poetic lyricism behind the musical masterpiece
This is freakin awesome
Thank you for fine work, Lystoric
Thanks! Glad you liked it!

@@nickdinatale-b9iWhich verse ??

My knowledge is expanding ☮️
Ty for making this. I knew what it was about, but u helped further validate what i felt .
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Very nice interpretation!

Always listen to "Battle of Evermore" before "Stairway to Heaven". There is a reason songs appear in certain order.
Love that ❤
Great explanation.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the story, my friend. It just goes to show that relationships come and go, but Stairway is forever! 🤘
That was AMAZING…TY 🪄💗🪄

Excellent
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
The Piper also represents the Fool in the tarot. In other words your journey starts when it calls to you.
I'd like to know your thoughts on Jackson Browns , "Everyman" similar story, so even a cowboy can understand. From '64 to '74 songs tried to change the world, then disco happened . . and now here we are, "On a road to know were" 🐊
Thanks! I'll add that to the list!
Well done.
Facts
This is a fairly delightful analysis. For further study, I suggest listening to Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva"
Excellent job!!!
Thanks! Much appreciated!!
Never saw the prophetic message, nor knew it was intact with truth.😊
Why do so many people say this is satanic. Yes if you play it backwards you can hear satanic verses but this explanation really resonates with me
People hear what they want. But I agree with you. There is nothing evil about this song.
