I came out of school 2020 with that exact adetude, nothing in this world could have made me work for anything.
Then i started an apprenticeship at a Mouldmaking company and my whole life did a 180.
Long story short they fired me / i quit bc of the way i was treated and am now working fulltime for a company just a few Km from my home.
On the other hand if i had never started that apprenticeship i would have never come this far, I (just like Barry) owe machining my life.
Its nice to see that, no matter what, with machining you can and will have a good job that pays well and teaches you a lot.
For all the guys out there struggeling to live on a day to day basis i can only say: Start machining, you wont regret it.

I'm a 61yo fitter/machinist in Australia who regularly maintains CNC machines and the size of your house which are used to machine large carbon fibre wing components for a very well-known aircraft manufacturer. I am continuously amazed to the complexity and accuracy todays that CNC machines are able to achieve even on very big components. Robots on rails are also being used to CNC machine components once done by stand-alone machines. It is a shame here in Australia we ran down metal trade occupations in the 90's in favour of service jobs. As such there are very few apprentice's and young tradesmen behind me. The good news is that I will never be out of work until I retire and I too earn way into six figures.

Barry, I love the brutal honesty about how bad past Barry was and how you were able to move on from the past and become an extremely productive member of society and in a way give back to those who are in your spot. In a society that focuses on "woe is me, everything is out to get me" I appreciate you being like "no, I can do better than this" and dedicating your life to this craft. Keep up the good work on inspiring others to hopefully go out and do awesome things.

I work for the city of New York as a machinist. As you might have heard there is a migrant crisis here. If we could harness all the manpower of these migrants and underserved people in public housing we could manufacture our way out of the many crises we now face. Jobs, Education, Meaningful solutions to real problems. It's all there if only somebody with sway and vision could lead that effort. All of you guys are an inspiration. You've changed the perception of the machinist trade. Not an easy task considering the headwinds you faced like classism and deeply held yet wrong-headed idea that college is the only path to financial success and the ability to live a dignified life. I appreciate you guys doing such good work. And I love the machines!

this kinda brought me to tears , i had a sort o same expierience, i never knew what i wanted untill i started machining, i worked at a shop with only manual machines and i liked it and kept me on the good path, then they send me to school or cnc which went good till corona and i had to do online classes which i didnt follow, ater that i could not bring what i learned into daily work because i did manual but was learning cnc, years later i came to another company and started milling again with ''teach in'' machines, easy to use but they were amazed how i used it and made products almost perect, tihis motivated me to stopp al o the BS i was doing like drugs and partying and now im climbing and feel so much better and more worthy about mysel, its amazing what machining can do i u like it.

Barry, baring your soul to the world.
Absolutely beautiful. I have been watching for years now and vividly recall da boss doing the same, more than once. It's a beautiful thing to be so down to earth and honest, with the sole intention of helping younger people make the right decisions. Telling them that they have a future, at a time when they don't think so.
Chokes me up that you have the courage to tell your story not knowing the responses.
I love this. I think you made a lot of kids do some serious thinking today.
Unfortunately, you may never know how many lives you changed or redirected today. Rest assured tho, that you did/it will
I'm very happy for you. This channel wouldn't be the same without you onboard.

    • @telescopereplicator
      @telescopereplicator Год назад

      Dear mr. Setzer,
No, I'm afraid not. I live in the Netherlands and I (try) to make replicas of historic telescopes. My current project is the famous red telescope made by Galileo. I am one of only 5 people in my country who ever saw the original telescope up close, out of the cabinet. The owner of the museum (IMSS, Firenze) took the telescope apart for me, so I could take measurements and photos.
I consider this a great honour. It's going to be the most accurate replica ever made of this telescope. At the moment, the project is on hold, but I am still working on it. This particular project is by far the most extensive, expensive, most accurate and most adventurous project of my life.
Finding a girl and marrying her was nothing, compared to this project !! hahaha...!! ;-)
BTW, my replicas are made of paper (genuine 300 to 400 year old paper !!) and wood. I need brass stamps to make the gold embossing. They will be made in England. By hand. Just the brass stamps alone will cost a fortune, and then there's the rest of the project.....
I need to win the lottery if I ever want to finish this project.... Sigh.....
