No other athlete has been so completely superior to the rest of the competition. They changed the rules to make it possible for someone else to win.

Its so strange to see this now. The "step-left/right" technic don't exist anymore. It was a late 70s/early 80s technic everyone professionals and good amateurs used while competed.

I was there with other ski instructors at Lake Placid 1980. Ingamar won the GS What I noticed about his style was that he kept contact with the snow all the time. The other racers did a “hop” after the gate where as Ingamar just did an edge change. Quite the athlete.

So funny. I lived in Europe when I was in my teens and I was very serious about ski racing. I rode up the T-Bar with him once in St. Moritz and almost fainted. I stopped skiing for many years and just started again and decided I should probably take a lesson since my skis looked like they were created by aliens. My teacher asked me to ski for him. He said "Great but really old school." I've been watching skiing all along but I didn't know what he meant. He told me I'm putting all my weight on the uphill ski on my turns like they used to on straight skis. On the new skis the power and control come from the weight not he lower ski. I did what he said and things got better quickly. Now watching this I see exactly what he's talking about. Everything in both Slalom and GS is skating off of the uphill ski. My god, the conditions and courses look so much worse than they do now. It looks like I felt watching races on film from the 50s in the 80s.

@Jonathan Wallach - So much of your comment is completely wrong. I have to assume and give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't proof read your comment. You've apparently made several critical typing errors that has turned your comment completely to the opposite of what you actually meant to say. It's all good though, ... some of us get what you were trying to convey.

modern tech is simply helter-skelter get down the mountain. skiis do the work. its two-footed jam those edges and go. by the way it was around Tomba and company who started the two-footed turn tech but he made it look elegant (fewer moving parts and fast)....but...... (note: it actually was the mighty warriors on the Peugeot Pro Tour of Bob Beattie who were the forebearers of what we see today)

As a 50 year old Italian I noticed the progressive downfall of Italy in sport and culture in the last 40 years or so, but Sweden, gosh, for the same period has had a far worst downfall in sport (they were great in all disciplines in ski, and doing very well in many other sports, individual or as a teams -tennis, athletic and even football, among others). In Arts like music (they had some legendary group like the Abba) or cinema (like the great movie director Ingmar Bergman) and in general as a society they were regarded (and rightly so) as one of the most developed nations in the world in terms of model of social democracy and human creativity.
    What's happened to Sweden??

    • @villecool1
      @villecool1 2 года назад +2

Sweden is still avant-garde in many aspects, including sports and culture. You are comparing the achievements of a long timeline with only the present day achievements. Even so, present day Sweden has a remarkable ensamble of performers. Zlatan and Mondo Duplantis being the ones in sport who come to mind first. In cross country skiing the women are finally starting to catch up to the so long dominant Norwegian team.
But also in culture, like Max Martin, Notch, Pewdiepie, recently deceased Avicii etc. Not to mention the frankly absurd amount of famous Swedish actors.
So no, I don’t believe there has been a decline. Legends like Björn Borg, Stenmark or ABBA do not come by often, and it’s unjust to compare the collective historical accomplishments with only the present day.

Sweden is still vastly superior considering the size of the population. 52 Olympic medals in the last four years, 20 of them gold medals.
As far as music goes, Sweden might be the most successful country in the world judging by population: Avicii, Robyn, Max Martin as well as some of the world's most popular rock acts like Ghost, Sabaton and Opeth. In film, Hollywood is full of Swedish actors like the Skarsgård family, Alicia Vikander and Rebecca Ferguson. The Golden Palm at the Cannes film festival has been awarded to Sweden twice in the last ten years, both times to director Ruben Östlund.

Society as such as crumbled, some good music and sportsmen/women can't counterbalance that.
