The Naked Gardener we could totally build this! Might even try using scrap lumber👍 like the idea for trim on the top too - will definitely be good to keep water and soil from going in between.
Thanks Rob. Still trying to get rid of all of this extra lumber so it definitely helps to do projects with a fellow Texans content creator to motivate me to get rid of the lumber. Thanks for watching.
As a brand new gardener I am starting to rethink the things I used to think was cute and pretty. I’m thinking I’d put lettuce or herbs in a planter like this
I am not sure about flowers. I am not a flower grower expert. We were thinking about flowers that attract butterflies and possibly ladybugs. Maybe even planting some herbs in this as well.
Haha good luck. They are easy and cheap to build. If you have a few scrap pieces of wood then it shouldn't take you long. What is she going to plant in them?
@@TheNakidGardeners "she"isn't going to plant anything. She will be having ME do the work while she supervises!!! Probably various perennials - petunias, marigolds. We have a "bambi" problem. I live in a town but the damn deer come in every night and even eat plants that are deer resistant!
I want window boxes so badly but I’m sure the plants would fry in them here because our sun is so intense. Hanging pots don’t do well here either. But hopefully as our trees grow it will help and I can get some 😁 Thanks for the great video!
The Naked Gardener you would think so but actually that side is the hottest at our house this time of year. I checked one time and it’s about 30 degrees hotter. I had to move my garden because everything kept frying and I couldn’t figure out why. That’s how I came about this discovery. The way our house sits though it doesn’t really matter which side I put it on because one side or the other gets the harsh at all times. I’ve had things fry at each spot. So we are planting more trees. Our average uv rating is usually 11 or higher most of the day most of the year. It’s interesting to learn how gardening in the desert is so different even from places in the same growing zone. It’s been a huge learning curve. But you’ve given me a good video idea! Thanks!
Thanks. Yeah it really does. We opted for trees but they take time to grow but we picked fast growers. The trouble with shade cloth is that we also get extremely high winds and micro bursts fairly often too and shreds everything. So we try to strategically place things to add wind block also. I have luckily learned some securing techniques recently from other that live in tornado and hurricane areas thanks to the power of RUclips 😁
Home Depot will cut the lumber for you. You should be able to just give them the size you need. What would you plant in this window unit if you could build this planter box?
See? This Mrs hate when I use country slang and saying. I keep telling her, can take the boy out of the country but can't take the country out of the boy. Lol Thanks for stopping by and watching. We appreciate ya
The wood is from a cedar fence project I was doing. The fabric is landscape fabric from the big box store. I normally do 5/8" drainage holes in everything. From containers to worm towers and worm bins. Are you plannimg on doing this project?
You will have to place a pan or something underneath it. Or you can lightly water the soil just to get it moist. Most herbs do not need much water anyways so you should be good. What type of herbs do you want to grow in it?
@@TheNakidGardeners Thank you so much for replying! I was thinking 3 separate sections within the planter, because I've read some can't grow together. I'm not 100% on which I will do. 1) Lemon verbena and lemon thyme 2) Cilantro, basil and parsley 3) Sage, thyme and rosemary 😁
@@EternityM interesting choices. Now I will warn you on the lemon verbena. It does get bushy. As does the rosemary, eventually. I am loving the no.2 selection. you can easily keep those at bay. The good thing about choice no.3 is they are fairly drought tolerant once established.
Great techniques. Please could we hear you drilling or whether you are using drill driver. Cover up music is annoying and gets in the way of the rapport you are building. A newbie like me wants to know each sound and equipment you are using and why you trimming round the box.! Thanks
I'm relatively new to woodworking, and this may sound like a stupid question, but... I have seen several people building a box around their miter saw...why ?

That is a beautiful planter box. I would never have thought about lining it with cloth.
I learned from doing our ladder planter box to add it so the dirt would not fall out of it. Trying to get rid of a lot of this lumber. lol
Nice planter box sir, going the DIY route is always better in my opinion if possible!! Good un!! Dan
Yes sir! Especially when you already have the materials from previous projects. Thanks for watching.
Nicely done -- even nicer that it's for your dad!
Thank you. He has since passed away but use in his memory
Very nice! It's been so hot, hopefully y'all stayed well hydrated. I like that it might be a HERb box. 😁 Can't wait to what y'all fill it with.
Yea this Texas heat has been a killer. We had to stop and start so many times from the camera overheating.
Wow! That’s great!! Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Trim was a great touch!
Thanks for the feedback. I think I may even add addtional trim for the top so you cannot see the trim pieces. Think you can build this simple planter?

This is awesome! I see thinking about planter boxes for my home. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. What all are you going to plant in them?
I did it myself with the Woodprix plans. I think this is the best way to find out how to build it.
Thank you. I forgot where I had seen the plans for this. I felt it was easy for me to build without it. How did yours turn out?
@@TheNakidGardeners Awesome. With woodprix plans I made it nice and easy I think
