हर साल, गुजरात 200 से अधिक त्यौहार मनाता है। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पतंग महोत्सव (उत्तरायण) मनाए जाने वाले सबसे बड़े त्योहारों में से एक है।[1] महीनों पहले से, गुजरात में घरों में त्योहार के लिए पतंगें, विशेष बॉक्स पतंगें बनाना शुरू हो जाता है।
भारतीय कैलेंडर के अनुसार, उत्तरायण का त्योहार उस दिन को दर्शाता है जब सर्दी गर्मियों में बदलने लगती है। यह किसानों के लिए संकेत है कि सूर्य वापस आ गया है और फसल का मौसम, मकर संक्रांति/महासंक्रांति, आ रहा है। यह भारत में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण फसल दिवसों में से एक माना जाता है क्योंकि यह सर्दियों के अंत और फसल के मौसम की शुरुआत का भी प्रतीक है। गुजरात के कई शहर अपने नागरिकों के बीच पतंग प्रतियोगिताएं आयोजित करते हैं।
गुजरात के इस क्षेत्र और कई अन्य राज्यों में, उत्तरायण इतना बड़ा उत्सव है कि यह भारत में दो दिनों तक चलने वाला सार्वजनिक अवकाश बन गया है।[1] त्योहार के दौरान, स्थानीय भोजन जैसे उंधियू (रतालू और बीन्स सहित एक मिश्रित सब्जी), चिक्की (तिल के बीज भंगुर) और जलेबी भीड़ को परोसे जाते हैं।[2][3] त्योहार से कुछ दिन पहले, बाजार अपनी आपूर्ति खरीदने वाले प्रतिभागियों से भर जाता है।
2012 में, गुजरात पर्यटन निगम ने उल्लेख किया कि गुजरात में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पतंग महोत्सव उस वर्ष 42 देशों की भागीदारी के कारण गिनीज वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड्स बुक में प्रवेश करने का प्रयास कर रहा था।
Every year, Gujarat celebrates more than 200 festivals. The International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) is one of the biggest festivals celebrated.[1] Months beforehand, homes in Gujarat begin to manufacture kites special box kites for the festival.
The festival of Uttarayan marks the day when winter begins to turn into summer, according to the Indian calendar. It is the sign for farmers that the sun is back and that harvest season, Makara Sankranti/Mahasankranti, is approaching. This is considered one of the most important harvest days in India as it also marks the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season. Many cities in Gujarat organize kite competitions among their citizens.
In this region of Gujarat and many other states, Uttarayan is such a huge celebration that it has become a public holiday in India lasting two days.[1] During the festival, local food such as undhiyu (a mixed vegetable including yam and beans), chikki (sesame seed brittle) and jalebi are served to the crowds.[2][3] Days before the festival, the market is filled with participants buying their supplies.
In 2012, the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat mentioned that the International Kite Festival in Gujarat was attempting to enter the Guinness World Records book due to the participation of 42 countries in it that year.[4]
