These are the Real Gems of My Great India.. despite the Dholak being broken at the end.. they performed so well .. I think there are ones which needs to be put on India's Got Talent.. Hat's off to them
Having grown up in Rajasthan and having heard it so many times by many artists in many variations, I opine this is one of the most excellent renditions Maand (that is what it is called). Patrick I cannot express my gratitude in words. My ears were yearning to listen songs in my mother tongue.
Ibrahim Please understand they're fulltime day laborers living on maybe $2 a day who were never formally trained in Music. The beauty lies in their rendition of Maand, unrefined yet so mesmerizing. Trained singers know that Maand is not formally a Raag, however its sweetness and beauty transcend all definitions. Other exquisite renditions have been sung by Mehdi Hassan, Ustad Naseer-ud-din Saami, Lata Mangeshkar and Vaani Jayram. Listen them as well. Each one is sweet in its own way.
Forget about 'ratings' by commenters. People who complain about 'lack of ideal conditions' to enjoy themselves and bring that joy to others can take a look at this video for a lesson. It is a bonus that I found the music fine too, considering they were not performing at an A/C hall in front of formal audience.
It is indeed beautiful... the langas and tha manganiars... but it seems as if they have mixed 2 songs: one is the welcoming song 'padharo mhaare des' and the other describes the camel decoration 'gorbandh' but it is still very beautiful
Actually they were not day laborers and they were trained in music passed down through generations. They are part of a musical caste - meaning this is their role in society for hundreds of years and they make music as a living. I think perhaps the chorus was not so good here because this was the entire family participating, including small small children. This was a way to get everyone involved and have a nice family time and welcome me.
I agree. These people are at the bottom of the social pyramid. And unfortunately, due to the current "norms" in India, they get trampled upon by everyone. The deserve recognition and respect. Luckily, change has begun. Let us hope that the various movements do not lose momentum.
No...I don't mean to be disrespectful but I don't think you understand the conditions under which these people live. I think they were not in a good situation and not extremely free. It's a brutal life and perhaps it's best not to romanticize it too much. I took this video, these people are poor and deserve better from their government (although this is difficult in India). I think I would describe what I observed in this area of Rajasthan as quite fudal still, despite having democracy.

Happy to be doing what they like most, the digital revolution has not reached this place, so these people are happy with simple things of life.
