- Episode 2 is finally here! If you enjoyed episode 1 of the conversation between Dr Tharoor and The English Nut, you will love episode 2.
Many have interviewed Dr Tharoor on the subject of English, but this conversation is special.
I'm The English Nut and I am as obsessed with the language as Dr Tharoor - which makes for a witty conversation indeed. One that is chock-full of observations about English. You can watch it for the learnings, or simply enjoy the banter.
BUT FIRST, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO SUBSCRIBE TO The English Nut! HIT THE BELL ICON TOO. Then you'll know as soon as I release a new video.
In this video we will discuss Dr Tharoor's pet peeves when it comes to English mistakes. As the 'English teacher to the nation', he will help us correct some of these mistakes. He will also talk about George Orwell and the darker side of 'political English'.
All in all an absorbing, entertaining and enlightening conversation!
(This conversation was recorded months ago, but for various reasons - not the least of which is the pandemic - it did not see the light of day earlier.)
In case you are new to The English Nut, I create weekly videos on the nuances of English. My objective is to introduce people to the finer points of the language while keeping them entertained.
English is nuts. And I’m nuts about English.

Hey to use Presently to mean at present or now is not at all a mistake, it's completely correct.
I wish to watch a political debate between Mr. PM of India and Dr shashi tharoor....M sure it ll be more hilarious conversation ever we heard.😃😃😃
Tharoor, you stand corrected. You said presently means soon. Yes, there is a meaning that presently means soon. At the same time, when 'presently' is used as adverb, it means 'now', (You can refer Oxford dictionary, which I am quoting).
"People confuse reticent and reluctant ,Its a very common problem in India ".
Me, who's hearing "reticent" for the first time :
Same dude samee
It sounds like no one needs to know reticent 🤪 why to know to many words and confuse ourselves.
Even me
Many of our well educated Indian may not understand Dr Shashi Tharoor's English language ...
Sameeee
Same here😂
Having him as their English teacher is still a dream of many .
"English teacher" is incorrect use a teacher of English..
Most Indians open their dictionaries just when Tharoor opened his mouth.
Especially the opposition... 😂
@@arkapravadey9654 Its better to check than accept him blindly though.
Not only Indians but also native speakers
Why do you think that everybody is a prune like you?
Not only Indians.
He deserves so much more ...i wish Indians used English as a language not as a way to feel superior .
Any language should be studied with genuine interest ...and not forced on people .
His way of introducing new words and making people learn is really nice .
He makes learning English interesting even for the Englishmen 😂😂
'Language should be used to communicate' says Dr. Tharoor.
And yet he uses at least one fancy word in every sentence. Bless You!
hahahahahhaha.😂kerala power ❤️
No, Nagabi lo, all words he uses are of English usage many of old/ middle/ modern English. Or derived from other languages now included in English. See his biography on the Google. Or some interview ,he started reading at the age of two years the mysteries of Enid blyton which he finished in one day.
@@anuradhainamdar8967 and that is why we common people finds hard following his English.
@@bichumonlotha3130 I may be a common Indian true but just like Dr. Shashi Tharoor I am a voracious reader too. I have read his " Pax Indica " but didn't find that interesting. I myself have a M.A.degree in English literature. But Dr. Tharoor is highly decorated with degrees. And finished his Ph.D at the age of 22 itself 🤣🤣 plus his experience as serving officer to Secretary General Kofi Annan of U.N. is vast. Having taught English language in schools I have improved the students pronunciation skills which I found pathetic even after they had reached their High school 🤣🤣.
Keep. your language simple - Dr Tharoor has a great command of the language, so he doesn't have to fear malapropisms.
He is suitable for EDUCATION minister post
In my opinion
True.... He is very highly educated and deserves it.
He should be PM, he was close to being UN general secretary. Education minister 🤣🤣🤣🤣
He can be, but imo the better candidate and the need of the hour, is someone who has an expertise in RnD in university level and a doctore in the field of science and technology. I'm not sure but I think the present education minister who's from WB i think, fits the bill more than most other candidates.
education does not only include learning and speaking english. It is much more than that.
@@shruti2926 he has em' all
We need a podcast from the English nut!!!!! This is the type of content which internet needs!!!!
I think he is the only politician in entire politics who is loved for his spoken English .....and we all proudly admire and aspire to be like him.
He can sCore 10 band in IELTS.
IELTS would bow infront of him
He will correct the examiner for sure.

Super duper excited 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 just love the way he talks

Thank you for this Gem
Finally something which I knew and Shashi Tharoor didn't "Bite your Vs and kiss your Ws"
Its meaning??
@@umerbinshabir6561 to say words like van and viper, your front teeth bite your lower lip to say "vuh" . To say water or watch , pucker your lips like you're going to kiss...its "wotah" not vaaterrr. Just a native speaking layman..not expert

Coolest politician serving under the _Uncoolest_ political party.

@@MM-ue4ol Don't know which party is that you're talking about but he should quit politics.
@@vibhaskulkarni well how come my comment states that he is a great politician and has done everything right. No politician is good everyone has done or said things which is unforgivable.. but what you said in your statement tells how you've been raised up.. seems like abusive language is quite common at your home that's how you've been raised ... Talking shit about someone's mother or family.. Idk what you said is true about him or not but even if it's true what you said is on the same line and you fall onto same category ..

I am a simultaneous interpreter in Colombia, I do English to Spanish. I had to interpret 2 Indian speakers, I almost lost a couple of neurons. It becomes my personal challenge, so, I started to listen to as many Indian speakers as I could, I am very happy I found this pair. It helped me to associate the language in a different peaceful way. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I feel so elated after watching this interaction among our two beloved English Nuts. Thank you, Mr Nut, for organising this session with "The father of English Nuts".💖 I am one of his greatest aficionados and I wish to see him someday.😍🥺
And it would be so nice if both of you are doing more talks together. We love this combination.💚

A man who made India proud with great lexicon !
Well half of the Indian population don't know about him

India indeed considers English as the most prestigious language.

Tharoor - Uh......let me stop you there, and yes, please hold my beer
Some people want to look cool by saying "in lieu" to mean "in context" whereas it means the exact opposite.
Would love to see more of these videos, eagerly waiting for episodes 3.

Really enjoyed this episode! I could listen to Dr Tharoor talking about the English language all day frankly. 🤓👏👏
Waiting for more such episodes.
It's always a pleasure to hear both of you speak.
Fascinating. Elated. Mind-boggling.
I'm an English aficionado and enjoy all conversations on the language, its evolution and usage. While watching the above video and agreeing with the views expressed by both participants, I was waiting for an allusion to the word ' oversight', which the Americans have hijacked and altered to mean something almost opposite the correct meaning.
Do watch my video on Janus words. :)
I read Paradoxical prime minister few months ago and I thought he is being cynical to PM polytically though I loved Shasi , by now lie of PM is being unlayered proving Shasi tharore Right. I will suggest dear sir to re launch it.

#TheEnglishNut You both are a charm. Thank you for this. What he mentioned is so apt. A wrong usage gets so popular that it ends up being the right one. Wrong usage of revert was a byproduct of MNC English. Restrain and refrain are another set I see being ruined. I love you both. Thank you!
