@Half-Random Jack then you’re using too much water. keep a tissue by ur side to wipe ur brush often and try experimenting using different amounts of water. Going over the same area multiple times also rips paper so don’t overdo it, relax and paint.
What type of paper is best for water color? And brand paints and brushes that are cost effective?
@@tsmart727 check out my guide to watercolor supplies, I have a few alternatives listed!
I used to think I was a brick in water from a childhood drowning incident. I took swimming lessons several times since, not able to swim. In my mind I always wanted to conquer swimming. Last year I moved to a community with a heated pool that sat empty. I started to go and learned from youtube coaches. It took me a long time to get over fear, get things right, and get swimming muscle. Right now I cam breaststroke non stop and comfortable front crawl. Perhaps I’d conquer watercolor the same way, by doing it often and don’t give up.
I randomly came to this channel again. She isn't as popular she used to be. I remembered about her and saw she uploads once a while. I used to watch her 5 years ago when I was fond of painting. I have found new things to explore in my life but a part of painting was extremely relaxing and fun in my life. Seeing her the doing the two paintings that I exactly did watching her was extremely nostalgic. Things have taken turns and this video made me refresh the good fine time when I was a kid.
Thank you for checking up on me! I also had other things to explore in my life during my break from RUclips and I think it's so important to do that from time to time. I never really considered myself "popular" and these days my goal is definitely not being popular but to connect with my subscribers and students on a deeper level. I'm glad you enjoyed this video and it was also fun for me to recreate this old painting. It's like visiting the past and seeing how much you have learned and grown not only artistically but also as a person! Maybe one day you will pick up painting again so you can do that in your free time! :)
😊 ... often I spend hours because watercolorpainting is soooooo faszinating ...
I´ve a lot of fun and forget just the time ... this is very good for mental health, to come down after work, for better sleeping and so on. I don´t must be a artist - sometimes is the way the goal and I hope you understand what I mean.
I really appreciate this video! I started to learn watercolor painting but then stopped cause I got sick and now it’s been a year, and I’ve been afraid to try again. But you reminded me that I should have fun with it and not judge myself for not being perfect at it or at the level I think I should be (even though I had just begun).
Same thing happened to me & I thank her for reminding us it’s possible just try & get that paint out!
My mom passed 2 months ago & still struggling to paint (know she would want me to continue) so trying again!
@@appleknocker56 I’m so very sorry for your loss. 💜
muscle disease. I started watercolour painting because it allows me... forces me to be loose, let go of it all... just enjoy the process and watch the colours flow.
I don't even have to paint a certain shape (like a leaf). I can just wet the paper and add some colour, randomly, let it flow, enjoy seeing it happen and then be content about it and write a nice word on top
@@appleknocker56 sorry for your loss. Don't forget to grieve first. If you'd like to get back to painting, how about you paint something she adored, loved or owned? A particular flower perhaps? Might help you with your grieving and keeping your hobby/passion going with a spark
appreciate that you remind your viewers to focus on the act of painting instead of the end result! a much healthier mindset!
So excited to see a new video be posted!!!! Love your art mako! Never stop!
Thank you so much!! I so appreciate your support! 💕🙏
I am so glad I found you. I love your support. This morning I just could not feel it this morning and then i found you. Thank you.
So glad!
It's funny because I bought myself an art table. After I unpacked it, I almost had a panic attack. I've put together furniture before but not like this, and I started to think I was in over my head. Then I spent the next 5 days talking myself down. A. It's for me so I can take as long as I need to get comfortable approaching it. B. I suddenly asked myself, who said you can't do this? You haven't even tried. You might not put it together perfectly, but any mistakes will just remind you how you conquered your fear and did something new.
Idk, it's just nice to listen to you talk about the process. It bolstered me even further. Thank you for your video! 🥰
Aww thank you so much for sharing! Yes, isn't it funny how we create a whole meaning around a table that is just a table? But in our head it starts representing something? 🤣 I'm glad you built it and now will use it to create your beautiful art! I hope you'll make it as comfy and inspiring for you as possible so it will become your happy place to paint!
That’s great as just got a large plastic container (to put my water & paints) & had to put it together by myself!
Then saw places could modify it so did & made me feel successful! Now which colors & where 🤗!
You can do it as me & putting things together (my dad tuck taped our mailbox lol!
I am a beginner. I love to follow your water colour videos. I have a question. May I know what did you use for the sun before starting the painting? Sorry for the ignorance.
Masking fluid 😊
I came to the comments looking for this answer. Never apologize for not knowing something and thank you for being brave enough to ask 😊
Thank you for the content. I am new to watercolor and am trying to navigate my way through the learning process. With 5 little ones, lessons aren't really an option for me. I found your videos and after watching about 20 of them, I bought you book! Thanks again and just know you are making a difference.
Hello Mako good to see you again. Beautiful painting by the way. I so relate I give myself a hard time. I stop myself and breathe then start again. I do love wc. You are so supportive and Id love to Thank you. And many hugs
Thank you so much for this video! Every mistake you mentioned resonated deeply with me. I've only been painting with watercolor since August 2022, but I've lost the joy of it because I'm too busy buying all the supplies, watching videos, and comparing myself (and my supplies) to others. It's time for me to step back from social media and just get lost in the joy of painting again.
If there’s someone here who’s always thought they’d never learn how to paint, trust me you can actually learn. I was someone who dreamt about painting for ten years before I had the courage to give it a go. I always thought it was too late. But then one day I just got started by doing simple tutorials in Mako’s book, and it just allowed me to see and experience the magic of watercolor. That really changed me and gave me faith in myself. Eventually nailing those simple paintings allowed me to build up to painting portraits, plein air and even paintings from my imagination. I’m almost two years in painting and I’ve created things that I never thought would be possible for me. So I’m saying give yourself the opportunity to try watercolor. If you keep going you will learn, and you will really feel the magic that this medium has. Trust me it is worth it.
lovely sunset! 😀 dont need talent for any kind of art, just need practise and a lot of patience 🙂
I love recreating paintings. I’ll be doing this soon with a forest landscape I did a while back. 😊 Thanks for sharing Mako.
So happy you uploaded a new Video, I loooove your paintings. It is so relaxing to watch and you really catched me with your art and this is why I even started watercolor. Please continue this great work, it is so motivating :)
Thank you so much!
I love the relaxing style of this video 😊
You are so right! I want to paint more this year, even when I'm paint only digital.
Please upload more beautiful painting videos like this!
YOURE BACK QUEEN
All children love to draw and paint. I've never met a child who didn't. We tell children that they can draw and paint then somewhere between being a child and an adult, most people lose it because they think they're not good enough. Children don't care if it turns out perfect and neither should we. I think deep down, we all love doing art but we care too much about the end result and about what other people will think and say. Art is freedom.
Love seeing a video from you again, your voice is so soothing! ❤️
Thank you so much!
I've been implementing a lot of the points you say in this video when someone comes to me and says "I wish I can do this" and "You have so much talent". I was personally burned by the world "talent" because the word was used against me when I was trying to go pass my Self Taught stage (before RUclips actually gave decent tutorials) "You don't have the talent", so I try to inform anyone who tell themselves they don't have "talent" or even "I wish I can do this", that art is a skill, not a Talent. It's a *learnable* skill at that. I also tell people to start with Student Grade stuff because while it's not Professional grade, it's at least a good enough quality to learn from and would help you learn what you like and don't like without breaking your bank. But also I prefer when people are doing reviews, they don't use "oh this is the best" but more like "This is similar to this brand due to A, B, and C, but the price is cheaper/it's a little smoother/it holds this thing longer" or whatever reason because then I can decide if the price is worth it to try it out in the long run.
I think part of the problem is that a lot of artists in both schools and outside are pressured to "be the next Picasso" or "the Next Master art influencer" that people don't think of the journey of the art process. People don't realize that Rubins couldn't paint lions for the life of him, so he actually had a student of his to paint the lions when they came up... and it had to be a client to force him to do litereally 95% of a painting of Daniel and the Den of Lions. Salvidor Dali couldn't draw Horses, but he ran with his weird horses as part of his style. If we could break down the "you have to be perfect to be successful", I think more would be willing to try art more often without the stigma.
Thank you so much for sharing this! This is so interesting! Yes, painting is definitely a learned skill! It it somehow always portrayed as something you are born with and not how much time and effort every single artist put into their craft. I understand where this comes from, but still makes me said that some people might never discover what beautiful art they could have created if they gave it a chance or would stick with it a little bit longer!
@@Makoccino Exactly. It's why I try to do some Art history education on the subject if they are confused on what I mean about it being Learned and not born with. Picasso isn't the best example of artists learning their craft because Picasso was known to be "a genius" as he didn't struggle much at all, Cubism (All stages) and the "Blue and Rose Period" was a choice because he was bored of realism. It's why I brought up the Ruban's story because that is actually more of something someone can relate to. There's also a slew of different artists that were around during the time that had verious levels of strengths and weaknesses which were around at the time and displayed during the Salon period, but we don't talk about those peices because they never become beyond the "big artists".
That is what I wish to do when I finally open up my RUclips Channel, is educate on the Art history and the social pressures that is put on artists today due to soceity not understanding how art came to be so vast in styles. Also subjects that isn't talked about much which I think would help open up more art discussions. Will it become big? probably not, but at least there would be videos out there which would actually deep dive into the social history of art and how each artists had bad critics and still kept going as they didn't care what they said. (Impressionism at one point wasn't liked because it looked like "sketches" but now it's the most beloved art style for example, and Photogarphy was seen as the "evil techology" when it first came out due to taking jobs from potrait painters, only for art to change because of it.)
it's very soothing to see you paint.
Thanks for your counselling, I was getting frustrated and I realized I was using sketch paper. I liked Subscribed, Shared and submitted my membership.
Love your technique
I had a major watercolor breakthrough a few days ago, and I feel so silly that I had ignored the information from so many artists - that supplies matter! This is especially true with paper. I had been using paper that while great for mixed media or collage, it isn't great for watercolor painting. Crazy thing is that I have the good paper, but have been "saving" for the right project, using lesser paper for practice and development. But I happened to try some better paper and I'm amazed at the difference. It's hard to learn water control and brushwork with paper that absorbs so much water, which is markedly different than watercolor paper.
I happened upon some great quality paper at a Five Below store, where I can get 30 pages for $5!!!
That's amazing!! Yes, with watercolor you do not want to wait for the right project or until you feel like you are "good enough" to be using it. Using the wrong paper can cost you the joy and progress you could have been experiencing when using good paper!!
This was so good Mako, great message as always, and such a lovely painting to watch, mesmerizing…thank you! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much Kathy! 💕🙏
Watercolor is definitely more technical than acrylic or oil, at least if starting from acrylic or oil, having to unlearn certain ways.
You just earned a subscriber, ty just was looking for this......👍👍👍
❤❤❤ its like you are reading my mind
Hi, is it ok if painting colors look dull in watercolors? After drying some colors seem not to pop.
To avoid this I start to apply more paint without adding too much water, so it feels like I'm painting acrylics 😑.
And is it ok to increase contrast (while editing the image) to give a color pop rather than showing exactly what I painted?
Yayyyyy! You're back! I missed you!
Good advice 🎨
Simle but lovely
Ma'am watching u for a long..I really enjoy your video when I was in the school
Still love your Work ❤️
Just want to meet u one Day ❤️❤️
So helpful!
Question: when you are doing a wet wash on entire painting, instead of taping down, have you considered wetting back first, then you wouldn’t have to tape down? The paper will stay flat and stick to surface nicely! Game changer for me (I’m older newbie).
Yes, I do that when I need even more time for wet on wet and when the painting is much bigger. But since it was a quick and small painting, it was not necessary 😊
Welcome back, cuty! ;)
Buenas tardes. Tampoco a ejercicios tan bien explicados y sencillos. GRACIAS! porque vuelvo a retomar, mi ilusión por avanzar.
Muchas gracias
It looks like you go back and forth with colors in the palette without fully cleaning your brush. Doesn't this make it really hard to use your palette in the future? Or do you clean off each color after a painting?
I REALLY want to start water painting but i'm confused at which painting to use , there's 5 ml tube that are expensive ( like set of 30x5 ml holbein ) but i don't know if this will last for a long time and i'm afraid to spend 120 $ on paint that will not last long since i'm just a beginner. I also see that some pan already filled is about 2 ml of paint in a pack of 12 and it being sold for 120 $ also which would result in a lost since 30 holbein tube for 120 will be able to do 2-3 refill of 30. I'm so lost :(
this closed captions looks different than ones from old videos. why is that?
How did she get the sun to stay in the back despite painting over it?
Really really missed your videos ;w;
so nice 😍❤️
I prefer the 'before' painting! just to be awkward my mother would say!!
This is so gorgeous! I painted along and it turned out pretty good! Is it ok that I post it on instagram? Tagging you ofcourse😊 I kinda lost my spark with watercolour lately and felt so frustrated.. I felt like I waisted so much paper and paint😭 this video really spoke to me, I could relate so much and the combination of painting and your encouraging words helped me so much loving painting again so thankyou!❤
Yes of course!
Yes😎
@Makoccino, I am just getting back into water color after a long hiatus. My problem is when I do wet on wet and creating washes my paper is literally disintegrating and I get little paper rolls. I’m using 140lb cold press 300gsm paper, brands are Art Advantage, Windsor & Newton and Strathmore. My paints are Aquarelle, everything is new. What the heck is going on? Any suggestions.
I would definitely invest in 100% cotton paper as anything else that is cellulose can be more brittle. So when you paint wet on wet, the paper starts to "fall apart". It doesn't matter if it's new if the quality isn't great! 100% is more pricey but so worth it, you won't be able to use anything else after experiencing it! You can look into Saunders Waterford, Arches, or Canson Heritage. Make sure it's cold-pressed!
Hey mako! I enjoy your videos and I have been watching you for a very long time! I have a question , I don’t know if it’s wired, but, (I’m not new to watercolors,)in my watercolor tubes there are numbers like PB:15:3 or PR170 ,PY3 PG7,PY42 etc etc etc I know everything else on a tube except these..can you do a video explaining them? Please thanks :D
These are different pigment numbers! Like blue, red, yellow, green, etc pigment and their different numbers :) There are different types of pigments with different characteristics. I believe the numbers are universal, just companies can choose different ones for their colors and process them differently. I hope this makes sense and helped you to get started with this topic!
Thank you so much mako and I’m so glad and happy you replied:DDD I’m over the moon 🌙:D
I like the previous one ngl
That can-do belief is for the most part imprinted on us by our parents or caregivers by 5 years-old. That's not my opinion, it's widely known in the field of child development.. My guess is you had at least one parent or caregiver who strongly encouraged you to explore and learn from a very young age. Unfortunately, not all kids get that. When you don't get any positive reinforcements, or worse, you get criticized, it's very hard to shake that later in life. That inner critical voice we hear is very old, so old that we think it's us talking. The key is to first notice the voice and know that it's not "you" talking." If you can notice what it's saying without getting wrapped up in the emotions, you're on the right track. Then you can take it to the next level by talking back to it. You can say something like, "Thanks for your input, but I'm going to sit you in the next room and close the door while I work on this painting." Another strategy is to imagine observing the critic through one of those one-way mirrors that they use for lineups or investigation interviews. Imagine watching it sitting there all alone talking to itself. You'll realize how foolish it sounds. If you close your eyes and really conjure up these images while in a relaxed state, that voice will get quieter and quieter. It worked for me! I still hear that voice when I create, but now it's more like hearing background noise that I can easily ignore.
