I just got this same kayak and one thing I noticed is when bought it and we was loading it on my truck, the salesman told me to load it back end first and I thought that was backwards so after watching your video you did it nose in first witch I think is the right way! Thanks for clearing that up for me on your video! I have a 6’8” bed so I should have plenty of bed for this kayak.
Here in Florida I do a similar set up but I use two ratchet straps. I like it nice and tight for highway driving. I have one around the back by the rudder and the second through side handles. Then I use rope to tie other items at the top of the truck bed.
Thanks for the comment! I like the idea of tying other items to the truck bed. I put most of my gear in the cab but would be nice to free up the inside space 👍. Pls subscribe for more vids. Thanks for the support. Cheers!
I have one but don’t use it anymore. I haven’t had any issues with the way I’ve been doing it but I would agree that it would help someone with a 5.5 ft bed. I believe I have a 6.5 ft bed. Thanks for your comment. 👍
I really needed to watch this yesterday. I bungeed the cart on my predator pdl, parked my truck uphill, i finally needed to ask for help loading it. I have a bed extender and kayak was sliding all over the place because i was pushing uphill.
This was super helpful. I just picked up my old town sportsman pdl 106. But drive a Tacoma and I used to have a smaller and more light weight kayak that I would leave in the bed of the truck and raise the tailgate up and tie it down but it makes it pretty hard to do it with this larger kayak plus the extra weight .
Hmmm. Never tried it backwards but if it works, I don’t see anything wrong with that. I put my cart in the far corner of the truck bed so I wouldnt have the space if I put the kayak in backwards.
@@WannaFishAllDay appreciate the response ... I'm new to the sport and just making sure I get as much and tell as possible and make good decisions. My cart fits either way but I may try forward next time. Thanks again
Anytime. My kayak also has built-in handles on the stern so just made sense for me to put the nose in first. Not sure if I’ve seen anyone put the kayak in backwards.
I probably would use a truck bed extender for a Bigwater depending on your truck bed length. I have one from Harbor Freight but rarely use it unless I’m going on a long trip.
Do you ever notice any rudder wiggling on highway trips? Do you ever load it rudder first to prevent? Going to be getting a 120PDL and have 6foot bed (8 with tailgate down). Wasn't sure if I should just get an extender or not
I haven’t checked about the rudder wiggling but a little flex is fine. I would upgrade to the navarre kayak fishing bolt. It makes steering so much easier. I also think you should be fine with a 6ft bed just as long as you strap it down properly.
@@WannaFishAllDay thanks for the reply. Ya the Navarre stuff is why I am going for Old Town. Love people passionate about the accessories they create like him
I think it depends on the kayak. I would definitely recommend an extender for an Old Town PDL 120 due to its weight. Also, check your local laws as well.
@@WannaFishAllDay Yeah pretty much unless you live in Nevada or Co you have to have a bed extender or a trailer. Anything overhanging by 4ft is ‘illegal’ but I’m just gonna not deal with the head ache and get a 10ft
Not necessarily overkill, but your strap method makes for a lot of walking. Im sure this isn’t an earth shattering idea but id be figuring out something simpler! I like the right off the cart into the bed idea though. Good stuff.
I wouldn’t think so. My PDL 120 fits perfectly in my 6.5 ft bed. I use 3 straps and it’s not budging. I’ve been on 4+ hours drives to tournaments this way. I also transport my AP120 the same way and even leave my blackpak pro attached in the tankwell.
That's foolish you don't know anything about securing cargo. If anyone is reading this DO NOT secure a load in this manner it is not effective. Using individual straps for both sides is the most secure way to ensure there is no lateral movement of your kayak.
@@WannaFishAllDay Thank you, I'm trying to decide between the two, I'm going to be using a trailer on either one, I'm not a big gear guy, I personally think people over due it, I live in Florida and fish strictly Bass, so for me it's 3 rods and one tackle box, I feel if you can't catch on topwater, plastics or a square bill. I think people over think it they go nuts with lures and flying all over the place with there powered boats.
Ok cool, thank you for the reply. I have a feeling I'll be happy with either one plus there's really not much weight difference, also have to find the right trailer. Just trying not to make the wrong decision.
No bed extender needed. I have used my 6.5 ft bed for a PDL 120 and AutoPilot 120 for a few years without any issues including long distances to different states. I would recommend investing in quality cam straps.
How long is your bed of your truck? I see a lot of guys using those bed extenders but even with my 5.6ft bed it doesn't really seem necessary outside of peace of mind or maybe ease of loading.
Hey Scott! Thanks for your comment. My truck bed is 6.5' long. I do have a truck extender but it sits in my garage as a clothes rack now.. IMO, it's unnecessary even for your 5.6' bed unless your kayak is a lot longer than my 12' OT. A couple CAM straps is more than enough to secure it safely and it’s easier for me to load/unload without the extender. Looking back at a younger me, I could've used that extra $100+ to buy more "on the water" gear lol. For added peace of mind, you could always use more straps. Anyhow, hope this helps! I would appreciate it if you could subscribe for more new content coming soon.. Cheers buddy!
I have another video that shows how I load it onto the cart. It’s not from the water but it will give you an idea of how I lift the kayak off the ground onto the cart. It definitely takes practice but there are a few things you can do to make it a little easier. Video is called “how to unload and transport a heavy kayak.”
@@WannaFishAllDay thank you I’ll check it out. I took my recon 120 out for the first time ever and it was an experience I need to invest in a better kayak cart too
After losing 1 ramball, just the ball from leaving it on my kayak in the bed... I never again leave anything that can fall out of the kayak. EVERYTHING goes in my truck.
I’m using the malone wide trak cart. It’s great! I would also recommend looking at the Wilderness HD cart if you have a heavy kayak. Check out my kayak review vid for other mods and more details. Cheers!
Thanks for the response…those are a bit pricey.. I’ve been searching for something cheaper for my feel free because then wheel and kill doesn’t cut it with a heavy kayak
Lol kayak hands out more of the truck then its in the truck , i hate todays trucks well if you can call them that , suv with small boxes , real trucks have 8 FOOT beds
I disagree. Trailers have there cons. Tags, more room taken for storage, tires to replace, spare tire, hubs to repack, lights, backing up a small light trailer is not fun.

Get CAM STRAPS
I’d suggest picking up a harbor freight bed extender that goes into your receiver hitch. Especially with a 12ft kayak and a 5.5ft short bed.

At 3:44 you can see he doesn't have the full cab which would mean he doesn't have a "shortbed"
Two 12 foot cam straps covers the front and middle for me. Less hassle having to use 4 of 'em.
