I never underestimated them. “Love Over Gold” was the very first CD I bought when I bought my first CD player - GBP 300 for the player and GBP 20 was the going price for a CD back in 1985.
For the first time ever, I found myself "spit-taking" over the lyrics as the song progressed. Some songs get better w/ age. In this case for "worsening" reasons, but I find myself beaming w/ a smile while listening. A sense of humor and rock and roll are the two greatest commodities we have.
This song sounds surprising Dylanesque. Almost has the rhythm of Subterranean Homesick Blues. I too always loved that line, it is classic, that's what reminds me of Dylan.
The more I listen to these lyrics, the better I feel, Dire Straits sees it in a way that tells the truth of it all. Thank you SO much for posting the lyrics. Peace!
Dire Straits' definitive album for sure. Masterpiece . 80s were just incredible.... as good as the 60s IMHO. I don't even think people who grew up during that time remember how many great bands there were... all at once. It's rare to find anything decent today... but during the 80s (especially the first half of the decade) there was almost too much to choose from. It was hard to keep up with all of it. Dire Straits was among the cream of the crop though... and this album is their magnum opus.
Almost 40 years ago Dire Straits released the fabulous album Love Over Gold, which I bought right away as the dedicated danish teenage-fan I was. I have always loved the sharp lyrics in this particular song! As I grew up I slowly realised that many countries governments and regimes, the media and huge companies all over the World, have interests that doesn't aligne with what most humans wants and dream about - deep in their hearts. Somehow along the way we got off track: enviroment damage, clima changes, over-consumption, wars...and now COVID is sweaping the planet, these lyrics are more true than ever before! I hope for mankind to wake up and together do what we're abel to and meant to do: Live in peace and harmony with each other on our beautiful planet. Love from Camilla in Denmark
While I was stationed in West Germany 1979-1981 I was turned on to two groups, which I followed and bought all of their albums, Dire Straits and Rush. Still today it makes me feel good mentally to listen to either or both groups. Love this song, makes me smile every time.
This song seems to be dead accurate social commentary on life in the U.K. in the late 70s, early eighties, despite how prescient it seems in describing some aspects of our current situation. Really, a kind of historical document of the time in which it was created, a perspective, if you will...thanks for posting it. I had forgotten just how great a song this was, along with many more from it's era!
Masterpiece from a masterpiece album, brilliant lyrics, great musicianship, composition/arrangement topnotch, greatness results, but, that is normal for Dire Straits.
This song was just mentioned on Bloomberg radio in NYC. September 2021. They were asking whether a song existed with the words Industrial Disease. I forgot how good this song is. Great lyrics. Still in COVID Delta variant pandemic in the US.
@Dark-Half; LoL at " reach for my bong out of habbit ". Same for me, but I still have the old smoker, now unused since '93. I will be cured of " Industrial Disease " as of September 7th, 2014 when I will retire aged 59¾ y.o.; been in the work-force since '72. Fabulous lyrics, especially " ther're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind " etc. Even more-so true today. Love the boppy lead Organ, jusxtaposed to the crunchy Guitar. Thanks A.S. for posting. :-)
@Ratboy --- I NEVER into your stuff.. Work was my habit.. be in the workforce since '76 now retired since dec 2215. still have the smokers disease. bent out of shape. but still tick'n. cheers mate. Larry
I've been a DS/MK fan since 78. This album is def one of my favorites, I wore out both the cassette and album. This is classic Knopfler writing/wordsmithing lyrics. I'll bet I'm one of the few yanks who knows what "spanner" is. I worked with a bunch of kiwis at a factory making windsurfers back in the late 70's so I had to learn their terminology for things ie; spanner etc...Crazy fuckers lol
And I am one of the few who knows what "brewer's droop" is though I didn't even hear it listening to the radio. So glad to finally get to read these fantastic lyrics.
@Joe Madej When this album came out there was a really popular top 40 song by Kim Carns (sp?) titled "Betty Davis eyes". Clearly MK in typical MK wit was referencing that song ! 😂
How can you not be bopping to this song? Still here @ 62 in 2024....I don't know how you come to get those Bette Davis.....knees? Who else but Knofler??
You've got smoker's cough from smoking Brewer's droop from drinking beer I don't know how you came to get the Betty Davis knees But worst of all young man you've got Industrial Disease 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great number but unfortunately too underrated. Dire Straits never disappoint and Mark is a wizard: I think he got his skill from Apollo himself: his guitar is divine; his lyrics are refined, sophisticated, full of mystery and memories: melodies are stunning and his voice is the right one for what he sings. In one word: perfect! We love you Sir Mark Knopfler! ❤
Great song, always loved it, but I just bought it on Vinyl and came to realise how weird the mix is on this version on RUclips, I wonder where its from because its definitely not from the vinyl version of the album
In a prior life I worked in worker's compensation insurance and "industrial disease" was a common complaint. No matter what you got, it was related to work! I think many were allergic to work!
One of my favorite tunes.
Worked in an industrial plant for 32 years.
Loud and clear
They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind. Utterly brilliant.
These are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze.
Better late than never- your comment is spot on- you really have to keep pace with this song to get the full meaning
One of a kind song by a vastly underrated band
I have never ever underrated this band. Dire Straits ushered throughout, my deepest darkest hours.
I never underestimated them. “Love Over Gold” was the very first CD I bought when I bought my first CD player - GBP 300 for the player and GBP 20 was the going price for a CD back in 1985.
Akin to The Kinks, really. They had a longer history, though.
Underrated? Mark Knopfler is acknowledged as one of the greatest guitarists ever.
I couldn’t agree more!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
For the first time ever, I found myself "spit-taking" over the lyrics as the song progressed.

no song has ever spoken such truth. I always loved this song but never really knew what it meant. you can't get more powerful than this
I remember hearing this on my car radio in 1982--- still relevant today!
The lyrics are more profound than I ever imagined...
I never could get the lyrics. Really great song!
Sadly topical. I blame capitalism.
Fast forward to the consequences of COVID-19
They're very prescient..
There’s a protest singer singing a protest song
Nobody but Knopfler sounds like this.
Nobody but Knopfler WRITES like this.
"Experience just talks."
writed
MK thé best songwriter.
Best songwriter for real.
"Two men say they're Jesus...One of them must be wrong." Ironic absurdity = pure gold.
Best one line in any song EVER.
That line nabbed me also, 4 decades ago, ONE OF THEM MUST BE WRONG!
This song sounds surprising Dylanesque. Almost has the rhythm of Subterranean Homesick Blues. I too always loved that line, it is classic, that's what reminds me of Dylan.
If God is three persons, then there could be up to three
@@Perririri nope..it's God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Ghost..you should have taken Bible study.
My F...God!!! I have been employed in sheet metal for over 43 years!!!This is my theme song. Thank you for this video!!!
Steven Liniak
Oh yeah I worked for Goodyear for 25 years.I had guys in the shop quoting the song!
Brilliant lyricist. Why isn’t this song more popular? 😉
Because most of the people listening to this group have never worked as anything but baristas and cubicle monkeys.
Love this song....commentary laced with wry humor
Never shows up on Greatest Hits. Timelessly prophetic.
Terrific song...not sure why Mark isn't a Sir Mark Knopfler along with Sir Jeff Lynne?..Both overlooked for way too long...please rectify Mam

I remember! Even a lot of the 'one hit wonders' had some good stuff!
"OH"!!! Yes I do remember !!! All to well.. Religiously. Music was far more important to me Then TV's Still is to this day. only Now it's on the PC
Agree.

Primetime Dire Straits, love these guys, this song, Swamp, Skateaway, Down to the River
Bloody brilliant writing. 👏🏽😄
Hope you are well.

This is my favorite Dire Straights song....telling a story that is completely current to the world in 2019
This beautiful song certainly went UNDER the radar- one of the most underrated and underestimated bands ever- thank you Mark 😊

Loved this song when it came out in the early 80's. It took me a number of listens to get the lyrics. This is nice. I haven't heard it in years.
two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong. Brilliant.
Mark Knopfler, thank you for picking up a guitar!
1987 Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens - Eric Clapton with Guest - Mark Knopfler .. .Fuckin' Epic Dueling lead all night .
@@shawnfoxfirth9684 Saw that tour when they came to L.A. at the Forum! Unbelievable!
When I hear a Dire Straits track with the keyboard. It always reminds me of fairground carousel music.
reminds me of old pubs with overweight grandads smoking and drinking and talking about the old times or back in the day....
Talk about every layer adding something great. Pure genius!
Digging that "California Sun" organ sound!
great song.

Used to work in insurance in worker's compensation. We called it occupational disease. Always loved this song. Told it the was it was.
Dire Straits RULE!, even today!
Feckin' brilliant lyrics. It doesn't get much better than Knopfler. I've loved this song since I was in HS in the 1980s.
Each album they had incredible hits with, but in the background there’s hidden gems just like this track
Been trying to learn it by heart for two weeks. Big challenge for my memory skills, but that's just why I love it!
I was told im so Industrious , by a guy, that was his compliment to me,ughh.for real dude .damn.😮
More relevant every decade. Brilliance.
From my favorite Dire Straits album, Love Over Gold!
Holy shit fucken awesome...TRUTH
A great song and one of my faves! The lyrics are telling.
Brilliant lyrics!
It never ends
such a killer mix

Surprised it wasn't a bigger hit at the time....
October 2021 the spirit moved me to find this :)
Great song 😎
This song is like a finely crafted wine 🍷
I seriously love the music in this! :D
Does organ in this song remind you of Riviera's California Sun
Employed In workers compensation insurance for nearly 40 years. Love this song.
Best ever from dire straits!
Great song-orgab reminds me of California Sun.
Just an outstanding song
This ís Dire Straights most under rated song.
Its amazing how many words rhyme with disease! 😊😊😊
Top and underrated...
I can't even begin to tell everybody how much I love this song and in some ways there's some truism in the lyrics
Stupendous. I love this tune. Knopfler and gang at their best. Hooha.
Been my favorite song since the first time I heard it.
Perfect for the year 2020.
lyrics reads like prophesy to me
I'm here in 2020. I think you're right.
Knopler 's song writing skills second to none
it just gets better
Who knew? Rockers can rap. Love the eighties.
I love this song, so damn catchy :D
I bought this album for this song❤
Mr Knopfler is a true diamond in the rough🔷️
Brilliant!
We all were forwarned about "gov't personnel" and alot more by Artists. excellent music era.
Awesome song.
Apart from this being a sterling song, which is still relevant today IMHO
It's nice to hear Graeme Garden playing Dr Parkinson.
Is it really Graeme Garden? I use to love the Goodies.
Very good song
if you are suffering from depression call this number... I wish there was one in the 80's . Fantastic tune...
In a prior life I worked in worker's compensation in California. This song was one of my most likes. Really summed it up. Used it in some seminars.
How come Jesus gets industrial disease? Brilliant.
Because 'Industrial Disease postdates Jesus' CRUCIFICTION, , to save us all. Nuff said?
brilliant, thank you!
Le meilleure groupe
Definitely a timely tune these days.....
Great song, always loved it, but I just bought it on Vinyl and came to realise how weird the mix is on this version on RUclips, I wonder where its from because its definitely not from the vinyl version of the album
Outstanding!
Always have to comment on the good sound
A question that has baffled philosophers for centuries:
How come Jesus gets industrial disease?
Now that is song writing.
great rhythm guitar
Good job on putting up the lyrics BEFORE he sings the words!! Few people do that.
fantastic!!
#DireStraits at their best in the 80s
