OBJ was simply correcting the Traditional Rulers as an elderly Yoruba man and a senior to most of them. And he clearly stated his reason. He also clearly establishes the fact that the Governor and Obas are not mates when it comes to governmental positions, so they ought to respect him (the governor) and pay obeisance along with others (They must have all sat when others stood to honor the governor). This man's emotional intelligence is on another level; Notice how he begs 'please and please' as he explains his point, but is stern when he gives his instruction. Always a general indeed. And they all knew that he was preaching what he practiced.

Obasanjo was not doing it for himself... He was teaching the Obas the right protocol... He didn't disrespect culture, he is just setting protocol and he is very right... Obas are subjects to the executive governor of a state and executive president of the country... such governor or president can only reciprocate out of respect... but that's the due order, it's not an age thing, it's about the office occupied... If an Oba will not observe proper protocol such Oba should remain in palace and not attend public functions... it is appalling how people don't understand proper protocol and start to cast aspersions on the person of Obasanjo who was correcting the Obas...

Well, for me I think what baba did here is not as embarrassing as we see it and say it. We need to first agree and accept the fact that traditional monarchs have been constituted to answer to the Governor of there state. The Governor is there principal Officer. If they don't show respect to him then they are not doing well. Stand up for the governor doesn't reduce them in any way. I have personally see a picture of Obasanjo while he was president prostrating to a oba. The tone he used might be harsh but don't forget he is a retired general. We should expect that. Born I respect his confidence to set the record straight. Apologies to the obas. I know it may be embarrassing but then the did is done and both party should learn and conduct well better in the future

Yes everyone should respect the governor but remember that position was introduced by Europeans. This very Obasanjo prostrate on the floor to the Ooni of Ife. Why didn’t he ask the Ooni to get up and welcome him? Shame on u baba.

I do understand the powers that the monarchy possess in England and i also know that King Charles is head of the commonwealth of nations. Yes England’s monarch is high and mighty even bigger than the Nigerian president facts. That said, I still believe our traditional rulers deserve the same respect like any other king or queen. It may not be the exact comparison but was just trying to stress some importance out of it. Thank God we have no monarchs in the states lol. Have a great day constitutional lawyer.

As a Berom man from Plateau State, I respect The seat of the Gbong Gwom Jos, more than any Governor or President in Nigeria (With all due respect to Pa. Obasanjo).
This power struggle did not start today, it's from the colonial era. Where the foreign system of power always finds a way to show its supremacy over the indigenous African Leadership. The former President could have ignored the Monarchs and moved on with his speech.
It's a bit petty to me.

It doesn't matter who you respect. No offence, bur your Gbong Gwom is not as strong as the Oba of Benin, Emir of Kano or Alaafin of Oyo, but even these traditional rulers know that they are nowhere near the governor when it comes to constitutional powers. We're not ruled by traditional rites, we're ruled by a constitution which states that the number 1 man in the state is the governor.

    • @jackmanuelo

The governors show them respect, but if there's a tussle, the governor is the CSO of the state. He ca order the police and sometimes even the military on how to move in his state. The traditional ruler doesn't have any power more than the respect that the people have for him

I don't claim to know what the protocol between traditional rulers and government officials is. Neither am i sure of the point at which this drama was enacted- that they didnt stand to welcome him and the governor or rise in obeisance as he walked to the podium to speak. Whichever it is, the manner he conveyed the order was my headache. Did obj need to howl at them like they were his houseboys? He could have said the same thing in a nicer tone by way of setting precedent for next time. The problem with Nigerian leaders is that they have entitlement mentality and suffer hangover from the way their positions are deified once they leave office. What he did was disgusting and simply showed that he lacked respect for the traditional stool. He never disappoints though. If he did better, i would have been surprise. He just wanted to make news as well- seeking relevance.

    • @Criticalthinking01

Obasanjo is still mad that Yoruba still don't see him as the most great upon all he has been privilege to accomplished. Yoruba rates Awolowo above Obasanjo, never president. Rates Abiola, never president, and now most of the kings supported Asiwaju instead of Obasanjo's Obi. That being stated, based on the current Nigeria's constitution, king officially reports to the Local government chairman. If a king chose to attend a public function, he must follow the protocol, king must rise for the office of the Governor. A governor can wake up one day, and remove a king. It may backfire or have consequences, but Governors can remove any king at will. However, king should be respected, tradition plays a strong role in Nigeria society.

Obasanjo is very honest on this issue. As embarrassing and degrading as his remarks is, we must admit that he is telling the bitter truth. Our traditional rulers/monarchs are puppets/vassals to colonial powers during colonial era and our colonial leaders passed the baton of supremacy over traditional monarchs to our federal and state government after independence, they all serve at the pleasure of the president and governors of of our country🇳🇬. Take Emir Sanusi for example, it was a governor in Kano State called Ganduje that dethroned and exiled him, this proves to Nigerians that obasanjo is 💯% right here.
But I would also like it even more if OBJ travel to Edo State and say this same thing to the Oba of Benin.

Obasanjo didn't commit any gaffe. The Governor is greater than the traditional rulers as long as he occupies that office, and that's a fact. The Governor gives the Staff of Office to them and can demote or dethrone kings within his State. Even in the colonial days, the traditional rulers answer to their colonial lords.
Apart from the fact that the traditional institution in Nigeria has outlived its usefulness, the so-called kings have brought more shame than glory to the culture and traditions they claim to be custodians of.

This neo-colonized old man who has chosen to be a total slave of the West just showed us his true colour. His Yorubahood has always been debated and now the debate is over. Yes, governors are higher than obas according to the slavery rule imposed on our fathers, but if a young yoruba governor is so reasonable to have let go of obas not standing for him, bearing in mind that this is ordinarily a very big taboo in Yoruba land, one old man should not come and embarass our obas in public like that.
The ones I blame most are the Obas. Why did they stand? This should be a lesson to them. They should always be ready. One retired general cannot scare an oba to stand when he has not deliberately chosen to stand when the governor entered, and the gov. didn't complian. The old man from Otta just stylishly made you Obas to stand for him. He is not concerned about Gov. Seyi Makinde. You know those old men that fight for respect everywhere ?

A king is known to be the head and cradle of our traditions and customs. No one would ever have spoken to the Queen of England of her blessed memory, nor to Iku baba yeye, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, of his blessed memory in such a manner.
I believe what we have in the recent times are not our traditions and customs custodian, but ceremonial heads without much power nor rights left in them, bcos of corrupt practices and inability to stand by the truth.
