      @@masoncooper9324 The univibe is actually a 4-stage phaser. It differs in the way the effect is achieved and it has a different, assymmetric sweep unlike most other phasers and this is a part of its distinct tone.

    • @vintagecharlie5969
      @vintagecharlie5969 3 года назад +4

      Totally agree. There are tons of great phasers, but none sound as organic and natural as thr asymmetric sweep and deep throb of the univibe. And it blows my mind that it was invented as far back as in 1968.

    • @mbreinin

    In 1972 I got my first electric guitar. I picked up a used Silvertone combo tube amp (I loved that amp). I had to have a pedal, so I bought a Kay wah-wah. I did not know it at the time, but that wah was an unusual design. It used a variable inductance to control the envelope. It had a very distinctive, crunchy voice. There were sweet spots where the harmonics almost chimed. It did not sound like modern wahs. It used a germanium transistor for it's preamp stage, which gave it a soft clip, rather than the sharp clipping of silicon transistors and op amps. Of course, I did not understand any of the nuance of this at the time because I was only 13. All I knew was I really loved the sound it made in one position. I didn't care about the wah functionality. I rigged it to stay in that one sweet spot.
    Inside the pedal was the schematic. Even before I knew anything about electronics, I tried to copy the circuit. My first attempt was a useless noise maker, but I kept experimenting until I ended up with a sound I liked. This got me started on a journey of a lifetime in electronics.
    For years, I dug up every article I could from Craig Anderton, plus other books and articles on audio electronics circuits. I spent more time experimenting with sound than I did playing the guitar, but I came up with some amazing, one-of-a-kind effects.
    So believe me when I tell you, the coolest guitar effects are the ones you invent yourself.

  • @666pinkster
    @666pinkster 2 года назад

    if you take two mono signals of the same thing and pan them against each other dynamically its kinda like what a phaser does. basically it uses a low frequency (speed) oscillator to sweep 4 or more phase shift stages. gives ya the feeling of spaceships flying thru your chromostones ;)
    it IS time... but very small. a flanger or chorus is more noticeable time. a phaser is closer to a dynamic sweeping filter, affecting tone more than time... it creates a similar effect tho, as when you take an out of phase signal and combine it with an in phase signal, the like parts cancel and the unlike parts reinforce. makes that wooshy sound we love so much.
    this creates the phasing, and its in parallel with the dry buffered signal.
    if you kill the dry signal, you get a vibrato instead which can be wicked freeking cool.

    ah I just love my boss ph3. I used many a phaser, even a MXR variphase, but I always keep coming back to that fall phase.

    I honestly think that phaser is also the coolest pedal, that or flanger

    I went into my local music store to buy cables for my Amp. Somehow I ended up trying a Les Paul and a Phase 90. I bought the phase 90 that day and it is still one of my most used pedals.

    I think hands down one of my favorite moments of a phaser being used is John Mayer's cover of "Wait Until Tomorrow" from the "Where The Light Is" album during the last bit of the solo. That solo by itself blows my god damn mind but as soon as he kicks in the phaser, it's that cherry on top that absolutely smacks you in the face

    Just a splash of pan reverb is the most goregeous effect you can get from a guitar in my opinion

    Delay is probably the coolest effect in my opinion because of the rhythmic genius you can use with it and there are so many kinds of delays.

    The coolest effect is the sound when you consistently head butt the strings on the guitar with tons of gain and feedback

    I’ve had a Digitech Synth Wah on my pedalboard for years. I very rarely ever use it for shows but it’s got some really fun effects for crazy, off the wall jamming and I’ve had a lot of fun with it.

    EQ is by far my favorite pedal. Allows me to run all my guitars through my amp without major tweaking. From standard to down tuned, passive to active, humbucker to single coil. Move a few sliders and it’s all good. No major re-tweaks on the amp or pedalboard. Just adjust a few sliders on the eq at the end of your chain. Gravy 🤘🏻

    I agree with you. In my earlier years of playing guitar, a phase shifter was the first effect that I wanted. For me, a close second, is a flanger.

    The Phaser was my first effect back in 1977 (I don't count OD as an effect, it just gives you more of what's already there.) EH Small Stone. I still have it. Coupled with tremolo, I use it as a poor man's Leslie cabinet

    I'll forgive you for the clickbait because I always enjoy your content. I happily owned and used a phase 45 in the mid seventies. I aquired another one (circa late 70's) from someone for $20. It does a pretty good faux univibe sound in front of an amp. It's my personal favorite phaser. I like it because it's suttle.

    Agreed - phasers, when used right, are awesome. I remember when I first started playing guitar (late 80s, early 90s) and got some effects that included a flanger but no phaser (what a disappointment). Phasers were big back then, especially in the "alternative" scene. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE WHAT A PHASER DOES... it creates the effect that is heard when two sounds that are identical go in and out of sync. DJs would create the effect by playing the same two LPs on turntables and put a slight drag one LP to have them go out of "phase" and then put a drag on the other to bring them back into phase.
