Thanks so much ! This is exactly what i was looking for. i did not even know what to type in the search bar. Polytonality in filmscores is an amazing topic
Thanks a lot Michael for this great video, I really enjoyed it and would love to see more in detail videos like this one... I understand that you already have a course on Film scoring, consider releasing a course on film scoring harmonic and melodic techniques, I bet it will be a success ;-) Kind regards and many blessings, Max
Is there a rule or guideline in using polytonality, which keys work together and which don't? The Williams piece, despite being in two keys at once, still sounds pleasant. What about, say, A minor over Bb minor?
Thank you. I use Cubase currently. But all the major daws will work perfectly fine! My piano skills have played an important role in harmony and to score fast. However making midi mockups is a data entry job, and you don't need to be a virtuoso pianist to enter the notes in your daw. Understanding harmony and orchestration and most of all having your own voice/sound I thing is very important.
Great stuff. Thank you very much! 👍👌 Today I discovered a new great RUclipschannel to make better music compositions : your RUclipschannel. Thank you, Sir!
Do you think there is a move away from demanding orchestration and folk are now no longer interested in flourishes, advanced harmonic techniques, (pseudo atonality).... seems they want more simplistic language. Would like your view on current trends.
There has been for a while. That said there are still fantastic orchestral scores that use this harmony technique (which isn't complicated) but we have a younger generation of directors and producers who wrap their head around sophistication. Also composers are far less educated and often come out of the rock and pop production (4 chord diatonic) worlds.
Why wouldn't you just show the score? I don't want to have to squint at your hands as you go through every individual instrument being like "this is what the bassoons are playing"

In short, study Maurice Ravel's music! Great tutorial, btw.
You’re the best instructor that I know of. I wish I found you before I started at Berklee!
Thank you Dave!
These tips could be a whole video series. Thanks for doing videos like these ones. I'm learning a lot, even as a working media composer.
Thank you!

Great teacher. Questions: What DAW do you use? Is it necessary you are keyboard player to compose well?

What is all the hardware used for dynamics vibrato on pad I look ?
Hey mike, do you have these examples in a midi format?

Track name?
Loots of buffer glitches coming from your DAW. May need bigger buffer.
Yea for sure, when capturing this video with obs studio and my full template it caused glitching, fortunately I have resolved that issue
It would be useful to ACTUALLY SEE A SCORE.
