    Happy shooting with film in 2024! Great photos again - love the mist on B&W film. Simple composition works best often! Not easy to see the best composition in the forest.

    Good set of photos, being in black and white works well for the location and subject. I don't shoot film (mainly due to cost) but very much like the results film photography produces.

    Happy New Year, David. Yep, I'm with ya. Film or digital, I'm here to get ideas on composition. Although film is fun and shooting my old film cameras, is fun as is developing, it sure slows me down. Thanks.KB

    I love the tones in these photographs. I've seen many film channels where the photos are either over or under exposed and the contrast is poor but these are spot on
    I plan to shoot on my old 35mm film cameras in the coming year. Sparingly of course. However I'll get them developed and scanned. I don't want to go back to the hassle of developing and printing again and the expense of a scanner. At my age now, I'm happy with digital proccesing
    Good luck to your ventures and Happy New Year 📷👍

    So many great shots, David! I especially like the trees at 9:40 - I think you caught the composition just right with the angle of the ground reflecting the angle of the tree limbs. I also really like the shot at 10:00. And of course, the light rays of the sun through the fog/mist at 12:25 is just stunning. The shot at 12:30 is great as well, and on it's own is superb, but the one at 12:25 steals the show when placed together. Looking forward to Film 2024, and your projects! Cheers!

      Greetings and thank you for the kind words. Yes you are correct, there are times when I don’t produce a lot of video content and that’s mainly due to the cost and the time it takes to produce a video. As you can tell by my low subscriber numbers I’m not really a RUclipsr 😆 so I make videos when I can, I also have a second channel called @seeingmonochrome that takes up some of my time as well, it has become a place where I do some project videos based around my black and white zine series Seeing Monochrome a other black and white photography projects. Thank you for noticing, I hope you have a wonderful new year!

    We also had the relative rarity of mist yesterday. The wind usually follows the river along the strath and it doesn't hang about. Popped out into the village woods, two hours later I came back to a hungry cat with possibly my 'shot of the year' (have I peaked too early). Its about three yards from a shot I took over ten years ago and just didn't see the composition before. So its always worth going back and revisiting in different conditions the same area.

    Hi, Dave.
    Because of you, I have also made a decision for my photography for at least this year.
    I will also only work in black and white.
    Digitally, otherwise, the costs would be too high.
    I then have to buy everything again, such as a film camera and lenses, and that is a bit too expensive for me.
    Someone who is disabled does not receive a generous benefit here in the Netherlands either, but a good benefit but not a generous one so that I can buy what I want.
    I work with the Lumix G9 which is the flagship micro 43.
    And the camera and lens didn't matter much to the outcome of the photo.
    We received our eyes for this from our Lord.
    I'm going to follow you more closely because I still haven't figured out how you get that beautiful contrast in your black-and-white work.
    I do this because I only photographed in black and white at the time of film, and I enjoyed that more than color work.
    I just wanted to tell you this.
    I have a spot on my lungs and for the time being, the specialists think it is a serious pneumonia, but it could also be something else.
    In four weeks I have to go through the scan again and then we will see.
    I really hope to learn a lot from you because even though I have been photographing for almost 35 years, you are never too old to learn.
    So bring those black-and-white videos and teach me how to take a good black-and-white photo.
    If anyone can do that, it's you, I have full confidence in that.
    Kind regards from the Netherlands,
    Antoine.
    PS. I have to do it this way because I can't find an Email address from you, my friend.

      Oh no! I'm sorry your are having health issues Antoine! I will be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way. As far as your photography goals this year... You should do photography how you like to do it! And as far as using a digital camera for black and white, that makes the most sense for most people. I have my own personal reasons for using film for my black and white photos and I wouldn't expect that to be the best choice for everyone. Some very good images can be made with either, it just comes down to personal preference. You've seen what I do to get my photos and how I edit them, there is nothing special about the way I work, it's just practice, make photos, edit, study the photos then repeat 😁
      My email is on my website www.ridingtheedgephotography.com
      Email me anytime for photography questions or just to say hello. Take care Antoine

    I too have decided to shoot film for 2024. I ended up getting a Pentax. 645 film camera. Been enjoying it so far! Any helpful info I would love. I will keep following you for film.

    • @DavidPattonPhotography
      @DavidPattonPhotography  5 месяцев назад

      I loved using the Pentax 645, it's a great medium format system! Be careful when changing batteries, the plastic in the battery holder can be pretty brittle, I went through a couple battery holders before going to a newer Pentax 645n which seemed to be a bit more sturdy. I regret selling my Pentax gear, maybe someday I will be able to revisit the 645 format.

    Hi, Dave.
    Simple is certainly not easy, especially in photography it is very difficult.
    The same goes for "Less is more". There is always that doubt of whether I should leave it in or let it expire. I like it when you tell me what you see and how you want to photograph it. Man, I learned so much from you. If I were to take those pictures of the trees here in the forest they would never look like yours. I've said before that I'm extremely jealous of the way you deal with contrast. I'll keep trying and who knows, maybe one day I'll succeed. But you are a black-and-white film photographer and a good one at that. You have very nice light to work with. The last one with the light through the trees and then the mist, they are so beautiful, my friend. If I understand correctly, you are only going to make film this year and not digital? It doesn't matter to me, I'll keep watching anyway.
    All the best for 2024 and I hope it will be a great year with films for you, Dave.
    Until the next ride.
    Antoine.

      Thank you Antoine, I was blessed with interesting light for this roll of film! Yes, your are correct, it is my intent to do only film photography for 2024, its something I've considered doing for a long time. I'm at a place in my photography career that I can indulge my passion for making images, I'm doing photography as an artistic endeavor so it really doesn't matter how I choose to work, its just part of my creative voice. I'm not trying to convince anyone else to use film for their photos, in fact I don't think it's for everyone, for me its getting back to the basics. :) Its always great to hear from you Antoine, I hope you have a wonderful start to a new year!

    I love the grey look of it. Ive been trying to achieve this look recently as most of the film i use tend to give me a high contrast. Any advice? Im considering using a kentmere 100 or a Ilford fp4 and overexpose a bit.

    • @DavidPattonPhotography
      @DavidPattonPhotography  8 месяцев назад +1

      One reason the tonality of the images in this video are fairly low contrast is most where made in the defused light of fog, which is low contrast to begin with. I work with Ilford Delta 100 mostly and have also used t-max 100 a lot as well with similar results. I use these films at box speed but if I’m unsure about an exposure, I may go over about half a stop. I’ve used Ilford fp4 in large format and really liked it but I imagine it will have more contrast in 35mm, mostly because the lenses tend to render a higher contrast than large format lenses. I’ve not used Kentmere 100 but from what I’ve seen, it looks very similar to fp4, I don’t think either would be overly contrasty and probably a good place to start. I’m currently developing my film in Arista Premium Liquid film developer and like the results. In the past I’ve used Delta 100 and rated it at ISO 50 but I also reduced my development time and that also gave what seemed like a lower contrast negative, but honestly, I find Delta 100 to be just about perfect for how I like to edit my photos, I’m not real big on crushing the blacks when the light doesn’t match 😂 but if I want the contrast I can certainly get it, I can’t imagine fp4 would be that much different. If your negs look thin on a regular basis then you might want to rate the film a little slower on your camera but really there are so many variables to why someone could have high contrast images. Good luck, it’s all about trial and error, I hope you find the look you are wanting!

    • @redskysaturn75
      @redskysaturn75 8 месяцев назад

      @@DavidPattonPhotography thanks for the insight. I love the high contrast look most of the time and I get it usually with double x, Jch streetpan and TRI x. But I was just trying to get a different look this time around. Yes good that you point out 35mm react differently, I've got to take that into consideration too. Yes the fog is an added factor. I think for a start I will try to shoot half to one stop over and see what I get. I think delta 100 will be a great choice too as I've shot the 400 and can see how it differs from the other 400 films. Thank you for the advise.
