Well when you get back to the roots of where rap really came from, you kind of get to the original poetry slam style that it originated from. Meant to get more of a message and a hard punch flow than to simply get poppy current radio sounds. I feel like that's the point really. If one of his songs happens to sound more pop, then it is either intentional or it just happens to be the lyrics and delivery just so happened to be much catchier than normal. I feel like that's what he goes for with his shit. Anyone can go pop with whatever style of music they put out there, but some people just make music for the art and what they feel in the moment. Kind of what it's always meant to be but pop songs aren't bad either. I happen to see the same comments saying what you said with another tagline of "this isn't real music" to follow, which is kind of disgusting for anyone to say when they themselves share nothing to the music world to even serve such an opinion.
